CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is fairly new & is already showing an early trend of transmission problems.

Owners report hesitation when shifting & grinding/hard shifting into gears. Some dealers are calling the condition "normal". Another owner reported his dealership replaced the transmission under warranty, but the new transmission had the same exact grinding problem. Design defect?

Pretty sucky for a brand new car, especially during the cold winter months.

problem #1

Dec 262012

Sonic LS 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,864 miles

I decided to visit the United States with my fiance, go down to Seattle which is 400km(248 miles) away from my city. The trip there is fine, just usual rough idle, no stalling though. ON THE RETURN TRIP,the HVAC system FAILS (the car has 2000 kms/1242 miles). I am not impressed, i can't deforst the windows and it's snowing and -1 celsius outside (30 F). We have over 250 miles to go home and I have the windows cranked open going 100 km/h( 65 miles/hour) to see out the window. THe highway from Seattle to my city has NO LIGHTS whatsoever, so I have a difficult time seeing, my fiance is using her shirt to wipe down the front windshield so I can see, it doesn't help that it's snow and pouring and the slush is splashig through the windows and it's freezing in the car and we have over 4 hours to go home. I pull over at the rest stop and all settings in the car HVAC system do not work. Heat or Cold, Defrost, Front,Floor vents etc...

We manage to make it home, i'm extremely angry now, and it doesn't help I have to drive to work tomorrow morning (6:30 am) with no heat and no way to defrost the windows. I bring some towels to wipe down the windshields while i'm driving and also leave the windows open to help the defrost.

After work, I decide this enough and drop the car off a day early to the dealership and they give me a loaner car. The consultant spends 15-20 minutes and writes down everything is wrong with the car and says we'll take care of it. PS I told them to take it for a highway run because the idle worsens after highway runs and almost stalls all the time after one. The car has 2217 kms on it now. Also the consultant trieds the HVAC system and sees it doesn't work.

The car is returned to me in 3 days. The mechanic went into the car and all the settings in the HVAC system works. No one knows what happened and why it failed for 2 consecutive days. There is no solution, just hoping it doesn't happen again.
