A few days before the complete failure we noticed that the brakes had started to feel "mushy". on 9/29/12 my husband hit the brakes hard and that is when the brake line blew out in the front and the rear. The brake line is completely rusted from front to rear.

I have a 2000 Tahoe I busted a brake line thankfully I did it while pulling out of my garage after I came back from leave. Now my brake pedal depresses all the way to they floor and takes longer to stop. (real dangerous) I didn't think much of it B/C its a third vehicle until I looked online and read so much about rusted brake lines. When I looked at mine they were all rusted. Scared to see what the damage will be to fix all the lines. Funny thing is the underbelly of my 2000 Tahoe looks worse than that of my 82 C10.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that when driving 35 mph or less, the vehicle would exhibit a loud grinding noise. In addition, the brake pedal would become soft when applying the brakes, increasing stopping distance and time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure where the dealer replaced the brake and the rotors several times but the failure persisted. The failure mileage was 58,000 and the current mileage was 84,000.

Brake line corrosion!! (all lines!), one ruptured, lost brakes, forced off road to stop, extended braking distance, almost crashed. Driving home from airport at 1am, getting off highway, brake pedal went all the way to floor.... brakes kicked in approx. 90-95% of the way to the floor, but took forever to stop. Another car was at traffic light off the highway, and I was forced into the grass on the side of the road before car came to full stop. Towed home - I replaced master cylinder thinking that's where the failure was, but then I couldn't bleed rear brakes and noticed the puddle under the truck and crawled under to discover there was a brake line that was completely rusted through. This happened at the ABS module, where 5 brake lines connect, and all the lines show dangerous corrosion levels and need to be replaced. It also affected a fuel line right there too, (fuel filter is right there).... I have owned the truck since new, and there is 1 line that looks brand new (never replaced), and all other lines in that area are dangerously corroded. Very odd that one line looks good, and all the other lines are bad. I have pictures of all lines and corrosion available.

I was pulling into an angle parking place and the ABS brake system suddenly engaged, the vehicle surged forward striking a dumpster. Later it happened while slowing for a traffic light, almost causing me to rearend another vehicle. The dealer and GM have told me they fixed the problem once under a recall and will not cover it again.

Driving in the fast lane on the freeway, had a sudden stop in traffic, my brakes went to the floor, and skipped to a stop. Brakes went to the floor thereafter having to coast to a stop. Brake line had rust corrosion and cracked. The same thing happened again October 2010. My son was driving us to his driver's education class and the brakes went completely to the floor having to coast to a stop. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Another line had rust corrosion and split in two.

Driving home from church 20 mile trip, about midway pressed on brakes and pedal went all the way to the floor with total loss of braking. Managed to make it through two red lights with horn and hazard lights before coming to a stop with use of parking brake. Immediately I popped the hood to check for brake fluid and reservoir was still half full. Had the wife cycle the brakes so see if there were any problems with the master cylinder or booster. All looked good, walking around the car I found a large puddle of brake fluid inside drivers side rear wheel. Limped car home, and noticed the rear brake line which sits above the frame rail was completely rusted through. I can not replace this line myself so I will be returning vehicle for service to Chevrolet dealer.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that the ABS system was failing and when driving at a slow rate of speed, the brakes would intermittently fail. The vehicle was inspected by the contact's personal mechanic who advised that the failure was within the braking system and that the contact should have the vehicle inspected by an authorized dealer. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired in 2003 under NHTSA campaign id number: 05V379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The dealer advised that the vehicle could be repaired at the contact's expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage 150,000.

I own a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. I began having trouble stopping at low speeds, the ABS system is engaging when I drop below approximately 10 mph, making it very difficult to stop at low speeds. The first time it happened, I almost drove off a cliff on a mountain road because I couldn't stop the truck. The cliff is approximately 1,500 feet down - we are very lucky we aren't dead because we only stopped a few feet from the edge. Through online research, I found a NHTSA recall (campaign id number 05V379000), which stated that certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system activation. The condition was more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. The recall was launched only in the "salt belt" states. The Chevy Tahoe I own was originally purchased in Wisconsin and driven there for 5 years before I purchased it and moved to Colorado. I called the manufacturer (GM/Chevy) to inform them of the ABS issue, and they stated that the VIN was not included in the recall even though the failures were identical. The mileage is 222,400.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. When the contact attempted to engage the brake pedal at low speeds when it rains, she noticed that the ABS brake control activated and disabled the brakes which caused the vehicle to continually move forward. The failure has not been diagnosed by a dealer. The contact also stated that when the vehicle was driven during very cold temperatures that the braking distance would increase greatly. The current mileage was 84,588 and the failure mileage was at 70,000.

ABS intermittently came on when I apply the brakes. After several weeks of this happening the brakes became very mushy. Changed both front wheel sensors but didn't fix the problem. Took to repair shop and they said the brake modulator was bad - $1200 to repair. We disconnected the anti-lock brake system at this point. Brakes work fine without it.

Tahoe

  • 120,000 miles
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe. While driving between 3-6 mph, the brake pedal pulsated when it was depressed. The contact stated that the sensors failed. The dealer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 05V379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), although the failures were identical. The contact would have to pay $705 to repair the vehicle. The state where he resides is included in the recall. The contact still drives the vehicle and shifts into neutral or turns off the vehicle when needing to brake, in order to avoid crashing into the preceding vehicle. The recall indicates that the failure occurs in corrosive areas. The failure mileage was 120,000 and current mileage was 127,000.

Consumer states brake pedal goes to floor. Brake lines to rear rusted through. Replaced 4 lines from front to rear. While braking the vehicle's brake line ruptured causing extended stopping distance. During repair of the brake lines the dealer advised the consumer that the antilock brake system self activates and will need new hubs to correct the problem. Within days the consumer obtained a copy of the recall and contacted the manufacturer. The consumer was told by the representative that the recall was only applicable in Canada.

My sunroof leaks, my brakes do not work well, my rear windshield wiper went crazy, wouldn't stop, now is broken; my two back power window motors have stopped. I cannot roll one down, the other one was replaced while under warranty. My parking brake does not work. My 2000 Tahoe also leaks underneath the steering column somehow causing my driver's side floorboard to get soaked and there are pieces rusting underneath due to this. My car smells of mildew because of these leaks, my leather seats are ruined and the floor boards are ruined.
