There was a short in the Human Interface Module (HMI) that caused it to fail entirely. They couldn't replace just the wire that shorted, but had to replace the entire module which has to be programmed to your VIN. The car was ~5 years old and certified pre-owned, but I'd only had it since late 2019 and it was hardly driven so it was still less than 50k miles (less that 15k since I'd purchased it).
It took the dealership several weeks to get me in, diagnose, and fix the module. They originally thought it was a radio receiver even though everything had gone out, not just the radio. The module has to be programmed to your VIN, so that is part of the issue with getting the part.
The HMI controls/displays the back up camera, GPS, and charging settings in addition to many other display "nice to have" functions (my 2hr drive with no audio was not fun) so it's a critical feature to the car for both safety and general experience. You'd never be able to re-sell the car without fixing it even if you were fine with not having those features yourself.
