This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The clockspring acts as an electrical conduit for the driver's air bag, horn and cruise control. When it breaks one or more of these systems fails without warning. I feel that it is a very dangerous defect. I have never had a clockspring fail on any other car that I have owned, several of which have gone well beyond 100,000 miles.
The failure of the clockspring assembly resulted in the air bag light being illuminated, and I'm assuming that the drivers side bag was also inoperative. The horn and cruise control were definitely inoperative. I purchased a replacement clockspring ($75) and installed it myself (2 hours). The nature and frequency of this failure would seem to warrant a recall, in my opinion.
Horn communication works intermittently comes on and off. Airbag light comes on dashboard, and there is no cruise control. Dealership is aware of problem.*akthe failed part is the clock spring. There is a recall issued concerning this part. The Ontario service department is not aware of any recalls issued.
Clockspring assembly in the steering column that carries power to the driver side airbag installed in the steering wheel is broken and thus there is no electric connection to the airbag. The failure is due to the way the connecting wire, consisting of a foil on a flexible belt, is wound into "clockspring". the belt makes two bends which causes stretching pressure to the foil and in the long run wears the foil and breaks the connection. The same configration carries also the signal horn connection and when the parallel running foils break also horn fails to work.
Air bag light on the instrument panel illuminated, horn failed to operate, and cruise control was inoperable. Dealership has examined vehicle, and determined clockspring assembly was faulty, and had to replaced at the consumer's expense. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
The air back indicator light stays iluminated. Was informed by dealer that clock spring was failing and that this controls the horn, cruise control and airbag. Eventually this would fail completely and we would lose the proper function of these components (which in my mind is a safety hazard and should be recalled/fixed free of charge by chrylser.
While operating vehicle airbag light on the instrument panel illuminates for short periods of time, 6-30 seconds. This problem occurs when steering is turned hard to right and, corrects itself when turned to left. Dealer has not examined vehicle. Please provide any additional information.
Airbag light came on permanently on 10/10/01. Shortly thereafter, discovered both horn and cruise control inoperable. Remembered internet report about NHTSA stepping up probe of chrylser minivans for clockspring failure complaints (internet report from 3/2000). Mentioned report to dealer personnel when took vehicle in to Dodge dealer for service. They indicated no formal recall on this part yet, but save receipt in event future recall required. Sending this information as further evidence to NHTSA that there is a problem with this part on these particular vehicles.
Clock spring connector providing vehicle with horn, driver air bag, and cruise control have worn out prematurely leaving vehicle with no horn, drivers air bag, and cruise control.
Air bag light illuminates on and off while driving, dealer has replaced clockspring three times and the airbag module twice, consumer is afraid to drive vehicle.
We had an internet article from March on this issue. A recall was being considered. The airbag light is on and the horn and cruise don't work, identical to the description in the article.
In October of 1999, our van was overheating and we had to have the radiator fan relay replaced. Two weeks later we received a recall notice and were reimbursed by daimler Chrysler. In February 2001 our airbag indicator light came on and the horn stopped working. We replaced the clock spring. In June 2001 we had to replace our fuel tank because it was cracked. We continued to smell gas and had to have our fuel rail replaced because it was leaking fuel onto the engine. We were told not to drive it because it could catch on fire.
