Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.
Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

While driving down the highway the speedometer stopped and went to 0 mph, the odometer read dashes, the wrench illuminated in the corner, and the airbag warning sign appeared. The RPM's in my vehicle began to climb higher as well and the car speed began to decrease, again I was on the highway. I got off an exit about 1.5 miles from when I noticed the problem start. After slowing down at the end of the exit I noticed my car would barely move and it slowly crept until I was at a safe spot to park. As soon as I parked other warning lights began flashing such as the tire pressure sign and another that I can not remember. I turned the car off and then back on and I experienced a hard start, which was loud, and when I went to change gears the car jerked violently as if the motor was jumping. When placing in reverse gear the jerk was even more violent as if I was being rear ended. I turned the car off and back on multiple times and changed the gears and each time it did the same thing. When trying to see if the car would move I had to push the gas pedal almost all the way to the floor before the car would even move a little bit and again the RPM's revved really high. I ended up calling a tow truck and my car is currently in the shop. Prior to this incident I experienced occasional jerking while driving and the car was switching gears.
While trying to get on the highway at around 40 to 50 mph the vehicle would not accelerate and started to hesitate. The rpms went up but the shift did not happen for many seconds later and with a loud clunk when it did shift and then we would accelerate and it would make a sound again and down shift. We have taken it to dealer and they do not find any problem. After reading on the internet other people having the same problem with their 2008 Ford Edge AWD limited, I cannot believe there is not a recall on this problem.
I own a 2008 Ford Edge. Recently I noticed my Edge having a hard time shifting into fast mode. I took it to the Ford dealership, nothing is wrong. Today it was horrible!!! I get to the stop light, my Edge would not "take off" like the other cars. I sat there embarrassed for two mins trying to press the accelerator, Edge finally jerked and then took off. I am very disappointed in Ford. I can't believe they have not recalled this Edge. Now, I have to pay to get Edge fixed when Ford could fix the issue, . there are thousands of people complaining about this vehicle.
Entering highway and auto would not shift gears or accelerate. Stayed idle at over 5 RPM's and had to pull off the road. Seemed like a transmission problem. Towed to repair shop for assessment.still at shop. This vehicle on multiple occasions before this incident has regularly engaged in a violent jerk when I have engaged it in drive or reverse. Seems like a transmission issue but dealer wont do anything unless they can duplicate problem. I have seen and know of numerous other Ford Edge owners that have had the same issue and no fix has been found or dealer and Ford wont fix unless it duplicated the issue while they have the vehicle and most times its something not covered. This is a serious safety issue and they need to be held accountable.

I see similar complaints on your web site, about rough shifting into reverse from the parked position and when backing up from the drive position. Is there a planed recall for this issue?
This occurred multiple times with my Ford Edge. I will be driving a highway speeds, and on the dashboard: 1. the odometer turns from numbers to dashes 2. the speedometer stops working 3. various services lights will turn on (each time it happened, different lights came on) then, I brake to a full stop, the car loses all throttle, and I'm barely able to accelerate. When I go to shift gears, there is a harsh, clunking noise in the transmission as I'm shifting. I was told this was a defect in the speed sensors but it occurred a total of 4 times in about 8 months. I had to trade the car in because it was becoming too unsafe to drive.
I have a 2008 Ford Edge sel that beginning last year started hesitating between 1st and 2nd gears and 1500-2000 RPM's. I have taken it to the dealership to have the computer for the transmission updated and it didn't fix the issue. The dealership can't seem to figure out the exact problem. But there are a lot of other people reporting this online as well. Ford needs to put a recall out so that consumers like me can have this issue fixed. The car also bangs when put into reverse. Please help!
Wrench light and airbag light on, lost acceleration on incoming traffic, violent jerk when switching from drive to park and vice versa. Multiple complaints all over the internet with same issue. Acts like a transmission issue when it's just faulty sensor tss and or oss sensor needs replacement to fix the issue.
Transmission seems to be a issue with the Ford Edge. Why has there not been a recall on this product? so many complaints on the Ford Edge transmission. I witness this first hand, May 2, 2014. While driving on the high way, my car out of know where seem to have lost power. The only thing that was moving was the RPM, but the car was slowing down. Finally after pulling to the side of the highway, and turning the car off, it reset some how and at least got me to work. I had to get the car towed from work back home because I did not want to run into the same issue. I did research and seems like I have not been the only one with this issue. Matter of fact there is a long list on you tube. What has Ford done to correct this issue. Other than repeatedly taking income from hard working consumers, for a issue that has not been resolved.
On Dec 6, 2013, when starting the car after sitting for<3 hours then shifting the car into gear the car acts like it is not in gear, races the engine and the speedometer shows a speed unrelated to actual movement. There is slow movement but no actual gear engagement. Car was taken to local Ford dealer who spent several days to repair the transmission. One April 20 the same episode occurred but this time I was pulling into traffic which could have caused an accident. The same symptoms occurred.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the malfunction indicator, the tire pressure monitoring system, and air bag warning lights illuminated. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle lost acceleration power and failed to shift gears. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 72,000.
2008 Ford Edge. Consumer writes in regards to power train malfunction. The consumer stated twice this year, she experienced power train malfunction, where the vehicle lost power.
The car seems to run fine in town. If it is driven about 20 miles or so on the highway, it develops the following drive train problem. When the vehicle slows or comes to a stop and the driver then accelerates, such as when driving in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway or leaving a stop light, it seems like the transmission and engine quit talking to each other and they come uncoupled during shifting. Since the gas pedal is depressed for accelerating, during the shift, the engine RPM revs up to perhaps 3000 and then the transmission abruptly shifts resulting in a heavy shock to the drive line. It does this between each gear during acceleration upshifting. If the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is shifted into reverse, there is a delay and then it shifts into reverse resulting in a similar heavy shock. I had several occurrences where I came off the freeway and stopped at the light and upon attempting to get going again, the engine was running and would rev up but the transmission was not engaged. I shifted into park and back into drive and the vehicle finally got going again with the same symptoms noted above. It seems to react the same regardless of whether the od is engaged or disengaged. We took the vehicle to one of the local Ford stores several weeks ago and they said they could not recreate the symptoms. I took it to a different service department perhaps a month later and they could not find a real problem but said all the codes were fine. They deleted the adaptive transmission files and uploaded new files and the problem was fixed even though they were not sure what they did to fix it. A lengthy drive a day later went well, no problems. But on the way into work in on April 3rd the same problems are back. It's back in the shop again April 7th. Not sure what's next. Maybe the factory can offer advice? thanks
My wife and I were driving on the freeway, with the cruise control on. At random the care kicked out on cruise and the speedometer was not working, we also had tire pressure warning, engine service warning, air bag warning and no odometer. We made it to the freeway exist, however when we went to accelerate the car barely moved. The engine would rev at high RPM's but would just crawl. We made it to our house (barely) and parked the car. The shift into park was very violent and made the care jump. With my foot on the brake I would shift from P to N, then N to R, then R to D and same order back to park. Each change was very violent. I turned the engine off, let it sit for about 1 minute, turned the car back on and the warning lights were gone and the odometer was back to normal. However, when I went to drive again the shift was still violent, I had not power (high rev and barely moved) and no speedometer. The car is currently in my driveway with that being the current state. I have done some research online and this appear to be a very common issue for these vehicles.
After starting car, vehicle made loud clunk sound when put in reverse. Car would not accelerate without pressing accelerator more than usual and engine revved high. Dash board went blank except for wrench symbol, airbag symbol and odometer had all dashes. Turned car off, waited a few minutes, turned car back on and everything was back to normal, car drove fine. This has happened about 5 times within the past 3 years, several months apart. Have also had to replace rear tail lights multiple times, sometimes within 2 days of replacement. Have taken car to Ford service, but they can't pinpoint problem. Now car is out of warranty. Seems like it could be electrical or sensors. Have read and seen videos of many others with this same problem with this year, make and model. Wish Ford would help owners like ourselves with a recall to fix this, as our loyalty has gone away with frustration. Have just today, 03/27/14 had my car towed to repair shop to check transmission. The dashboard has returned to normal, but loud clunk when shifting and will not accelerate without flooring it.
On the way home from a vacation, we pulled into a fast food restaurant to get a quick bite to eat. Upon leaving the restaurant, we started the vehicle and everything seemed normal. About three minutes into our drive home, the dash lights came on (specifically the wrench and air bag lights) and the vehicle lost all throttle power. We quickly pulled over and turned off the car to see if we could diagnose the problem ourselves. After being unsuccessful at identifying the problem, we started the car again and attempted to put the car in drive. The transmission produced a loud "clunking" sound. Each time you tried to change gears (I.e. reverse to drive), there would be an extremely harsh engagement and the gear change would be rough, each time producing a loud "clunk". I brought the car to a local mechanic who advised this is a common issue with Ford Edge's, in fact; there is a tsb bulletin (07-21-11) regarding the issue. This problem stems from a short in the output shaft speed (oss) sensor and the turbine shaft speed (tss) sensors. As I read the tsb bulletin, this issue should be covered by the manufactures emissions warranty, the dealership disagrees. This issue can be found in abundance with the 2008 Ford Edge vehicle. In a brief search online, I found a large number of complaints regarding this same problem from owner Edge owners. My complaint is that I believe this should be a recall issue and it should happen immediately. In this instance, I wasn't in harm's way, but in previous instances I have been in the middle of an intersection and lost the ability to accelerate, which is undoubtedly a terrifying experience. I am requesting your assistance in moving forward with this complaint as I'm not sure where else to turn. Thank you very much.
For over a year when my car had less than 100K and still under extended warranty my transmission started slipping and slamming into gear on takeoff. I took to Ford dealer ship and they ran disnostics and found nothing wrong but reprogramed the computer. That did not fix the issue. The car continues to todays to slip and slam on take off, the odometer bounces and the engine start cutting out/loosing power. Again the dealer said if the computer is not setting codes they cannot fix. Now at 110K out of warranty the problem continues just getting worse. I believe by reading the blogs that this is a large issue that Ford knows about but refuses to admit bad transmission design and will not recall. I think they should either fix the issue at their cost or buy back the vehcile. I am sure the main issue is the cost to Ford to fix the issue and they know what the problem is. They are more worried their stock holders that their customers. I guess they will need a bailout if they keep this trend up. I used to hold Ford as a quality company, with quality products, but no longer. The foreign car companies are producing a better quality product. I just want my car fixed or replaced. I have taken this Edge to the Ford dealer 3 times because of surging and the RPM's surging, clunking, etc. All three times was told nothing was wrong with it, now at 80,000 it has completely lost power and the tac revs to 3 and 4. I'm soooo frustrated that this is a known problem and after 3 visits with the same complaint, we are looking at transmission replacement!!
