Our data suggests an early defect trend, as owners of the 2007-2008 models have started posting their accounts of what happens when you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Some at high speed, some at low speed but always a random shutdown of the engine, electrical and power steering.
Time will tell if this becomes a widespread issue, but there's no drying the seriousness of the problem. With that in mind, we're flagging the Edge with our "Beware of the Clunker" rating until the situation improves.

While driving down my residential street my vehicle acted like it was shifting gears with a jerk and loud clunk. This has happened numerous times in the past as well. Turned od off and it did not do it again until od was back on again.
Edge had started to drive sluggish, could not get up to speed or get car into next gear. Driving home from vacation, car was very sluggish going up hills and RPM needle would rev high before able to shift to next gear. Check engine light came on with code of P061. Found Ford dealer locally who replaced filter. Car drove better for 1/2 day, then back to sluggish and not able to change gears. Took back to my Ford dealer, replaced maf sensor and throttle body assembly for $645. 10 months later city driving in heavy traffic, car is starting to slip into sluggish mode and having trouble shifting to next gear. RPM needle revs high before shifting gear. Will watch closely before taking back to dealer again. Notice hundreds of complaints for same problem with the Ford Edge.
On the freeway it felt like the car hit a hard bump exiting the freeway there was no longer any acceleration. The engine would rev way up but there was very little forward movement. It seemed as if the transmission was not shifting into the lower gears. I was very lucky to get through the quickly approaching traffic, without getting hit or someone else getting hit as the cars weaved around me. At a stop, I shifted into low with no change. I turned the over drive on and off with no change. I shifted into reverse and there was quite a big bang and the whole car shook (this was similar to what I felt on the freeway when I thought I hit a bump). Shifting back into drive, it was the same, lots of RPM and very little movement forward, as if I was starting in fourth gear. Turning off the engine I looked for any signs of fluid leaking or other indications of damage. Nothing was evident. After starting the car and shifting it into drive, it worked just fine. An internet search revealed that this is a common problem as there are hundreds of postings and even a few you-tube videos of the actual problem I experienced. Ford even has a service bulletin 103100 dated 4/24/13. Postings report transmission rebuilds (at over $4,000) and the problem still recurred. Successful repairs seem to center around a firmware, computer upgrade and replacement of turbine sensors and solenoids. With only 70,000 miles on this car I should not be having transmission problems. The service manager at the Ford dealership knew all about this problem and said it would take three days to repair at just under $1,000. He also said that they stock the parts for this repair (a strange comment). On the internet I found that most repairs took weeks because none of the dealers stocked the parts. Now it seems that this problem is so prevalent that many if not all the dealers are now stocking these parts.
The car would act like it was in 2nd or 3rd gear when you tried to go from a stop. You would have to give it a lot of gas to move and there were also times in the past where it would go but would not shift into 2nd gear for a longer than normal time. The first time it happened I turned the car off and then it started working. No warning lights ever came on until on Oct 25th when I was trying to go from a stop and the car was hardly moving. Warning lights started coming on so I went straight to the dealer and kept it running so it would not clear any codes. They ended up replacing the oss and tss sensors in the transmission.
While traveling on the expressway the car began making a funny noise. After the noise started the wrench (warning) light came on, and then the care begin to decelerate and I was still pressing the gas pedal. I was able to exit the expressway. The car would not accelerate as normal, and made revving noises when the gas pedal was pressed, but would not move initially.

Driving the interstate, car seemed to kick out of gear an engine revved up.car then went in and out of gear.also, after that car shifted very hard in 1st 3 gears.it worked fine for awhile and then did it again a few months later..after a few more episodes over a year(did try to get it looked at, but, car wouldn't mess up for servicemen)the tranny finally went bad while my wife was going thru an intersection..luckily it coasted enough to get it off the road(high speed intersection) or who knows what may have happened..I was able to get it home in first gear as it wouldn't shift..it did go out of gear at a stop light and I had to put it into park and back into gear...I had the transmission replaced and so far so good but, this shouldn't happen with low miles and others are having the same problem..

2008 Ford Edge has hard shifts (engine races like it's in neutral and then slams into gear with a loud bang) in two scenarios - from 1st to 2nd, while coasting in stop-and-go traffic, and when quickly accelerating, as in a passing maneuver, from around 35 mph. This results in unpredictable automobile performance.
We were driving the vehicle and came to a stop sign. All of the sudden, when we hit the gas pedal, the vehicle barely moved and sounded like it was in neutral. This continued until we found a place to pull over. We put the vehicle in park, and it shifted really hard. It felt like somebody hit us from behind. It also shifted out of park very hard. We turned the car off and let it sit for a while. We started the car and it worked normal and we drove it right to the dealership. The dealership said they couldn't do anything to address the issue because they could not replicate the issue. Our concern is that the vehicle is not safe to drive because it can stop accelerating at any point. The Ford technician could not assure us that the vehicle was safe to drive. We contacted Ford and they passed the buck back to the dealership. I understand that the dealership cannot do anything, but after reading numerous complaints of the same exact issue on forums and the NHTSA site, I feel that Ford should offer some direction on how to fix this issue to their dealerships since it seems to be a common problem with the 2008 Ford Edge.
My 2008 Ford Edge was brought to the dealership after hearing a "clunking" noise and smelling exhaust coming from the under carriage. The dealership diagnosed "...replace ptu assy fluid, had blown out vent...". the entire powertrain (583984) was replaced. This was the 2nd incident in 2 months. Prior to this event I brought it to the dealership after experiencing "slipping" transmission. While coming to a stop, the transmission went into neutral. I left the car for several hours, then re-started and it ran fine. The dealership could not verify any problems.
Loss of power, engine racing when gas applied, tachometer non responsive, sudden lunging of power. Loud clunking like being rear ended. Limped home, when I turned the car off then restarted, put it in reverse and a loud slamming noise like the clunking sound earlier and feeling of being rear ended. Towed to dealership, over 2 weeks later (less than 2 months out of warranty and only 971 miles out of the 60,000 mile warranty) Ford dealer told me that Ford would not cover any of the cost and the $4,012.69 transmission repair cost was on me. Hundreds of posts on the internet about this issue, including Ford tsb - NHTSA: Action number: 10039053 service bulletin number: 312104. But no help from Ford.
During the month of July 2013, our 2008 Ford Edge would make a grinding noise at about 40 mph. The car had been serviced by a Ford dealership in June 2013. Prior to the service, my wife had been complaining about the noise so I decided to replace the rear brakes pads. The brake pads were only maybe 20 % worn but I went ahead and replaced them anyway. My wife had made similar complaints in the past which prompted me to check and replace the front brakes a few years ago. In July 2013 the noise persisted so we took the car to the Ford dealership to check the problem. The Ford mechanic determined that the front wheel bearings were failing. Apparently, there is a flaw in design or workmanship that is allowing water to enter the bearing housing and to corrode the bearing inner and outer race. So, there would have been the potential for the bearings to over heat and lockup the wheels. The Ford customer service and the dealership refused to extend the warranty given the time required for the bearings to corrode under these conditions. I requested the old parts after the repair and there is obvious corrosion on the ball bearings, the bearing race, and in the grease. There are other Ford customers experiencing the same problem. The noise gets progressively worse over time that eventually you can hear it over the radio and conversations in the car.
Vehicle rolls when placed in park, vehicle rolls backwards on inclines while vehicle is in drive, rear bulb constantly burns out, strut and suspension failed.
While driving my car, all of sudden the car just stops with the dash board displaying everything. When try to restart the car, it sounds like the car is trying to start even after releasing the key but it doesn't start. All power is lost except for the lights and radio. The car will eventually start after a couple of minutes and you start driving and it happens again. Had car towed to auto repair place where diagnostics didn't show anything. The mechanic did drive the car and it stalled on him. He thought it was the "fuel kill switch" because it reset it and the car started. The switch was replaced and the car ran fine for 2 days then while driving on the highway started loosing speed and was unable to accelerate. The RPM's decreased then jumped up like the car had restarted. This happened twice then I lost all power and had to coast over to the shoulder.
This incident has occurred 3 times in the last year. After shopping for about 15 minutes, I start my car and it immediately make a harsh clunking sound when moving into drive gear. Then I have little to no acceleration and my speedometer, etc does not work. The wrench symbol comes on. When putting the car into park, it makes a violent, harsh sound. The first 2 incidents, I let the car sit for over 24 hours. When I start after 24 hours the car works completely fine and all the symptoms go away. The most recent incident I had the car towed to dealership within 8 hours of incident. They were able to determine it was the turbine and speed sensors, which I had replaced. I am concerned about the safety of this vehicle and feel this should be a recall issue.
My wife was driving her 2008 Ford escape from work on a very busy highway when she stopped at a store got back in started the car she noticed that the airbag light was on speedometer had lines going thru it when she put it into gear it made a real loud banging sound and jerked as she was driving' the car lost compression did not have any power at all. She made it home without getting killed or killing someone I went out to see what was wrong and when I started the car it made a load banging 'when I put it into gear it was even worst we called a tow truck and had it towed where we had bought it at ----- ---- ----- -------- it's the only Ford dealer close and they have a very poor record for backing their warranty's. it sounds to me to be the computer chip I have a warranty on it still so there should be no reason for them not to fix it but I will bet that they say that the warranty does not cover the power train but it does so if you are having this problem with your 2008 escape do not let the tell you that it is not covered if you have a warranty.the computer chip that operates your power train is part of the power train' if not for that the car would not move unless it was being towed if you work for Ford and see all of these complaint's about the same thing going on with the 2008 escape's what is it going to take before Ford step's up someone to get killed.
While driving at highway speed (50 -65mph), foot off accelerator and car coasting startling loud bang from transmission and entire car jerks. Put foot back on accelerator and everything seems to be working. Does not do it all the time but at least once a week. The bang is loud and startling almost causing accident. Could not repeat issues for Ford service department and they did not detect any problem in transmission. The bang is so loud must doing damage to transmission.
As I was accelerating the transmission slipped, jerked as the engine was shifting gears. It has happened multiple times (6) since I first experienced this.
I am unable to "select affected parts" in this form: Parts - power train, transmission, battery. Over the past 6 months there have been numerous incidents where my vehicle, upon returning to speed or entering a roadway/highway, or otherwise entering a roadway, it has made a noise, a sudden jerk, seem to hold speed (fail to increase speed) and seems to feel like it is failing to changed gears (appears to rev in rpms slightly), then jerks again, and comes back into routine shifting. It is an automatic. This happens often. I have had the fluid check, flushed, replaced, asked my mechanic and she can find no issues. It seems to feel like it bogs down, but rpms appear to increase (almost as if it is not in gear/neutral). It seems to be happening more and more frequently. I have routinely checked my car for recalls. And I should note have had the ball bearing go bad (as recalled) and replaced, including the entire arm on the left rear. Additionally, my battery has failed and been replaced (approximately 3 years ago) and has since required replacement again. It needs to be jumped started, and upon first replacement (by Ford) it was noted not all cylinders or cells were charged/charging.
I bought my Edge, used last year and I love it. Although, every now and then while driving the transmission makes a huge bang noise. Its scary!!! I hope that Ford will take care of this. It seems there are other complaints regarding the same problem.
