CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2007 Ford Escape looks pretty good compared to other Ford Escape model years, but still has a trend of transmission problems, so it's not a model year we can recommend.
Also the base model Escape did not come with side airbags so it received a "Poor" rating from the IIHS for side impact protection. Other similar 2007 models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V & Hyundai Santa Fe scored far better.

After having my 2nd tone ring replaced I drove the Ford Escape home from the repair shop. On the way I noticed a bad smell coming through the heater vents and smoke coming up through the hood. I had it towed back to the repair shop where they diagnosed the "Rack" in what I believe is the "Rack and Pinion" steering was leaking from a plug and dripping down on hot pipes causing bad smell and smoke. Steering and axle vendor reported this is a problem with Escapes and the plug can't just be replaced, the entire rack must be replaced.
Money Pit strikes again (Do not buy a 2007 Ford Escape!!!!)
