There is an awful mildew smell from AC since new in 2013. I have had it in the dealer at least 5 times and they always change the filter which does not help. They state they cannot figure it out or smell it. I hate this car for that. Ford does not care. They must know something because last week the service guy told me to pour Listerine in the vent over the engine!

I've owned cars where the condenser of the AC unit failed but I never heard of the compressor failing especially at such low mileage (74382 km). When the compressor failed there was a smell of burning wiring. I believe there was a failure that should have been covered beyond the standard warranty period. The dealership covered 1/2 the cost so this really made me suspicious.

This car has been the worst I've ever owned for failed components. My wife drives a 1999 Cavalier with 65000 km on it an the AC still works perfectly.

We purchased our Explorer brand new, off the Ford dealership lot. A few weeks after, I noticed a mildew-type smell that honestly almost smells like urine. I have mentioned it but there wasn't a lot of attention paid to it because there were also so many recalls going on at the time as well as one of my front wheel-well area pieces coming-off for no reason.

I somehow thought the smell may work itself out but here it is, 3 years later and I think it is worse. I like a lot of he overall features this vehicle has but this may be my first and last Ford. Between all the small things,, the smell and the fact that the interior lines aren't even straight (referring to the seam between the door and the dash), I just don't know about Ford overall. The tires are terrible too. I have complained about them since the first rotation. The dealership wanted me to give them time and then told me they were out of warranty and it may just be the brand. Really? It's just pitiful. For $45,000 you would think you could do better than that.

Really bad mildew smell coming from the AC every time. Brought it to the dealer and they did some sort of treatment which lasted a couple days. The smell came back. Brought it to the dealer again - will see what happens. Otherwise I really enjoy this 2013 Ford Explorer.

I start noticing a bad smell like mildew coming from the AC when turning on the AC, then few minutes later it disappeared, but when turning off the AC for an hour or so and turning the AC back ON, the bad smell comes again. I complained to the guys at the dealership and they too notice the bad smell, a try to fix it using a ozone treatment. They told me that the bad smell is possible with new cars, (this has never happened to me with other new cars) but the odor went away like for two days, now the odor is back. I guess the AC is accumulating water somewhere in the ducts. I have to take the SUV again to the dealer. I see there's others complaints about this issue on the site, is anybody from Ford reading this????? Very annoying.

Let's see what happens during my visit again to the dealer.

It is a brand new vehicle that I paid $36,000 for and would rather have that new car smell and not that sour urine smell that I've been getting.

My new car has an awful mildew smell when cranked. During the dog days of summer a horrible mildew smell started coming from my ac vents when the car was first cranked. The first two trips to the dealer they tried to fix the problem, now on the third trip it can't be replicated. Although I still smell it!

I paid cash for a new Ford Explorer XLT on 5/21/2013. On 5/22/13 I went back to the dealer and told them that there was a soured smell around the weather stripping. The salesman came out, opened he door and confirmed the nasty smell. He asked me to continue to drive it and see if it dissipated. I drove it a couple of weeks..no change. I did notice a second problem...the windshield seemed to buzz at highway speeds. I waited until my vacation to take it in so I could have arrange alternate transportation. They fixed the buzz, but said that they did not smell what I smelled. All they smelled was rubber and offered to wash and disinfect. I asked that the exterior be cleaned up I told them that I had asthma really bad and not to disinfect because of my sensitivity to odors.I asked them to clean up the exterior becase it had black sticky stuff all over it from where they fixed the windshield problem. My suv was also very muddy! Well, the new car smell is one of the few odors that I can tolerate and is part of the new car experience. They washed part of the rubber with cherry soap...I said NO!!!!! They took it back and washed it again. Well, the new car smell was gone, but it just plain stank then. They took it back again and cleaned it up...again. When the suv drove past me on the lot, I could smell it and gagged. They had put something on the tires to make them shine and thought that that was what I was smelling. I could not come close to my suv because I was having such a bad reaction to it. It stank inside, too and the soured smell was still there. They kept my car overnight to "air out". All I originally wanted was the soured, mildewed smell gone...I wanted the weather stripping replaced. They said that was not a warranty problem, but never asked if I wanted to pay to have it done. I am pissed! I have a $36,000 vehicle that I can't stand to get into! A reasonable, simple fix has turned into a nightmare! My new car smell is gone, my faith in Ford is shot, and I was told that Ford MIGHT be able to do a buy back if I was truly that upset. I will know in 4 days if they will do anything. What a crock! I will NEVER, EVER buy another FORD! BTW, My Explorer is 2 months old w/4272 miles.

Before I left last night, the service manager finally admitted that he had smelled the odor I was originally complaining about when I first brought it in. He said that maybe they got rid of the mildew and it would air out and be ok. I said,"MILDEW ?" He back-tracked and said that it might not be mildew. I explained to him that the only way to kill mildew was with bleach and that bleach was one of my asthma triggers. They have now had someone working on my car for 4 1/2 hours, made the problem worse, and have an irate owner. Wouldn't it have been cheaper to replace the stripping in the first place????
