CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Fusion builds off the 2010's reputation. That's not a good thing.

The first thing that jumps out is the ridiculous amount of power steering complaints. It grinds, it squeals, and it eventually just fails.

And if losing power steering isn’t enough for you, how about a sudden loss of engine power? That combination is enough to achieve clunker status.

I was driving in a parking lot when the power steering went out. I received an error message power steering assist fault. This had happened in the past and I would turn the car off and back on again and the power steering would return. This time it did not work. I looked it up and found that Ford has a recall 15S18 on this issue. I took it to a Ford dealer where repairs were denied under the recall. My car is a covered vehicle but Ford said I exceeded the mileage requirement of 150,000 miles but I am under the 10 year requirement. The only reference that I can find under NHTSA is that the vehicle must be under the 10 year requirement with no mileage requirement. The Ford dealer technician requested a waiver of the mileage requirement per Ford Motor Companys' instructions. It was denied even when the technician clearly indicated that the vehicle displayed the recall fault codes. I drove away without power steering and am concerned for my safety and the vehicles road worthiness. Dealer technician emailed comments to Ford Motor Company after denial " power steering assist fault is displayed, vehicle has no power steering. Eec test found codes U2011.49, U3999.96 for internal module fault. Tech verified vehicle does not have power steering " date 08-21-2019. Repairs will exceed $1,000. I do not have a scanner at this time but have retained all documents.

After reading Ford recall 15S18, it was a dead ringer for my problem. I lost power steering while driving at speed (45 mph) and nearly didn't make a turn. The dealership confirmed the issue was indeed the issue related to recall 15S18 and did the work. They replaced the steering gear and reprogrammed a module exactly as the recall prescribed. The bill was $2450 and when I brought up the recall they pointed to the fine print which said that the recall was good for 10 years (which I was within by 2 years) and 150,000 miles. I was a mere 7000 miles over the limit so they would not claim it under the recall. I was never notified of the recall or I would have had it fixed. The car had been to the dealership for years for oil changes and service, yet they never once thought to tell me there was a safety recall"!" I called Ford customer service to see if they would be reasonable but they denied me too. A safety recall, which is the fault of the engineering design of the vehicle, should be covered regardless of mileage!

While stationary, power steering locks up and gives error code on display. Its the same problem described in recall 15S18. It happens intermittently. Over the last 2 months it has happened about 7 times. I have to shut the car off then back on and it will function correctly.

Power steering failure while my 16 year old daughter was driving on a residential street. Luckily there was no accident although my vehicles manufacture date falls just before Ford recall 15S18 leaving me to pay for a problem all parties have already agreed that is Ford lack of engineering and quality assurance. How were the dates determined this recall? my car was made a couple weeks earlier and has the exact same defect as described in the recall. This recall needs to be amended to include vehicles manufactured earlier.

Driving on the highway when the power assist steering failure message and advance trac service message came on with an alarm. I pulled off the highway and discovered manual only steering and it was very very difficult to turn the wheel to pull into a parking lot and almost crashed. If I had to quickly swerve to avoid anyone I would have crashed. I had this vehicle serviced when I was notified of the 15S18 recall and Ford service only reprogrammed the steering module. They did not replace the unit. I returned the vehicle back to Ford service after this incident and they stated that the electronic power assist steering gear had failed.

On 7/24/19 I went to auffenberg Ford in to diagnose a steering issue. When I start my car the steering wheel is locked up, and the dash says "power steering assist fault" the diagnosis from auffenberg was 2 intermittent electrical failures within the steering gearbox. Exactly like recall #15S18 which effects 2011-2012 Ford Fusion vehicles without a 3.5L engine. My engine is 2.5L for reference. My VIN is not included in this recall, but I believe it should have been. Ford corporate informed me no compensation can be given for the $1,963 repair and $157 diagnosis until I submit a formal complaint with nhsta. I was given two case numbers from Ford corporate. Ann gave me case #tas22237463 and frank (a supervisor) gave me case #cas22237463-D6F0Q5. Please review attached documents from 7/24/19 auffenberg Ford diagnosis and roberts Ford 7/30/19 service. There have been no accidents or any event prior that could be related to this problem. I am seeking $2,120 compensation from Ford corporate for the repair of their faulty steering gearbox computer system.

Was driving home from work route 130 nu torrential down pour and I get a power steering assistant warning then I lose all power steering, thankfully I didn't wreck I was able to get off main highway to side road turned off vehicle hoping that would reset fault to no avail problem still there. I managed to get home safely took care to my mechanic I was told it was my rack and pinion and told me it would be a healthy bill almost 2K to fix. I also in turn found out there was a recall for my model year went on website to find out my VIN wasn't included in the recall which makes no sense at all, why would mine be excluded if it has the faulty part the same a others....how does Ford get away with not fixing all the faulty units"???"

Power steering has gone out. Saw that this is a common problem with the 2011 Ford Fusion, but Ford will not cover my car because it was not one of the cars they have recalled. It seems this issue spans across the Fusion and not just the cards they recalled. Luckily I had only gone a few feet from my driveway when it went out. It was difficult to move my car out of the neighborhood road and back into a parking spot. Only Ford is allowed to order the part and charge their prices. Chantilly Ford does not even pick up their phones for their service department.
