Started the car today, and was on a hill going upwards. Put it into reverse and car died and the oil pressure and battery light came on. The car stalled, and I almost hit the other vehicle parked behind me because of this. I saw this issue is common so I won’t take to a mechanic. Seems like another American made Honda problem... I will just drive my accord hybrid made in Japan next time... I’m sure it won’t happen with that car. smh Honda

Several times I have had the car die in reverse. And many more times I felt like the car would die if I didn't give it more gas in reverse than I would otherwise be comfortable with. In general the car shudders quite a bit while idling, and I think this stalling in reverse must be a related issue. This is a dangerous issue as I have to reverse faster than I want to.

We purchased a new 2015 Honda CRV touring. Our previous 2004 CRV is still going with 278,000 miles. About every two weeks or so (for the last 2 plus years), this car either shakes violently or shakes and dies when it has a cold engine backing out of the garage. I ha e taken to the dealer multiple times and they can not replicate and state it has no codes. It only happens after sitting overnight or longer. When it happens, it starts back up but I am sure the transmission is slipping when I start driving (high RPM’s needed to drive forward on level ground).

I have video of this happening and when I shared with dealer, that said that didn’t help since they needed to see it happen. I left several days for them to try to see it but could not get it to do it again.

I have seen multiple complaints about this online but from what I hear, no one has been able to figure it out yet.

Update from Oct 12, 2019: Good News - sort of. I have found a Honda Technical Service Bulletin 18-072 that describes this exact problem, the process for the dealer to confirm issue and resolution (new transmission).

My dealers (two I use) had no idea thisTSB existed. They still claim they need to replicate problem ( difficult because so intermittent).

Does anyone know if computer stores data when engine stalls?

I will eventually get this fixed but so frustrating.

CR-V EX Cvt

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,004 miles

This morning after starting the car and putting it into reverse, the car stalled twice. After the first stall, when I restarted the car, there was shaking as if the ABS was going off. I put it in reverse and it stalled again. This is the first time it stalled but I did notice since it was 2000 miles it was shake a little reversing from my driveway in the morning. I wish Honda would fix this or do something about it, because it seems there are a lot of people with his issue,

Purchased 2015 Honda CR-V in August 2015. At least 10-15 times when backing out of garage in the mornings car would violently shake, make loud noise and go dead. When I took car in for an oil change, told service manage about car with problem. He stated he had never heard of that problem. Manager told me to leave car and they would check it out in the morning. I could not leave car because of transportation. Called Honda Office in Calif. and was told to take car to Honda Dealer and ask for loaner car. On next oil change I ask for a loaner car and was told they did not have loaner cars. This is an intermittently problem which happens about once a month. I need my car for my work and could not leave it. They had no clue what was wrong. No service light come on etc. This car also has a vibration when idling. Looks like I have a lemon that can't be fixed. I think the CVT is causing the problem. Honda does not seem to know what the problem might be and are of no help. They want even rent a car for you to drive while you wait maybe for weeks for them to see if they can fix your car when they have no clue of what to do.

Occasionally the throttle does not work after a temporary pause at, say, minor junction when joining a major junction. Likewise does not work without pumping when reversing up a small slope into my garage.

Dealer had it on test for three days and could find no fault.
