CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends. Judging from the identical 2017 model year, the 2018 Honda CR-V is likely to have at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.

Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.

CR-V owners report overfilled oil levels due to fuel in the oil, & sometimes a gas smell in the cabin. That problem appears to be related to fuel injection which Honda hopes to fix via a software update. Honda so far has only conducted a recall in China & a "product update" in Canada.

CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

My vehicle was marked salvage without me as the owner knowing until recently informed by a Carfax report at Toyota. I was wondering why it was marked salvage and if it was done by Carfax or insurance.

Was packing my cr V and noticed very tiny rust spots all over the tailgate. Then when opening the tailgate noticed 3 bigger rust spots. I called Honda 104 where I bought the car and they told me too bad.

On Saturday 2/29/2020 I was traveling southbound on highway 183 here in austin Texas at 68 mph when my driver door opened. It didn't fly all the way open but it was ajar about 4 to 5 inches. I held the door as close to closed as I could while driving with the other hand to reach a save stop in order to close my door. I've had the vehicle for a year and 8 months and this is the first time this has happened but it is scary nonetheless. I was about 19 miles into my trip to work that day. There were no lights on the dash and that was no alert that my door was opened prior to it opening. There wasn't even a alert once it became open and I noticed because I could hear the air and the door was moving. The door lock mechanism still showed the door locked before I unlocked it and closed the door. While it hasn't happened again. I would still appreciate this to be looked into.

I own a 2018 CRV purchased new in August 2018. While sitting at a stop light on a slightly drizzly, approximately 45-ish degree morning this week, I heard a loud bang/explosion followed by a slight crackling noise right over my head. I immediately pulled my sunroof shade shut and when I arrived at work (about a 1/2 mile down the road), I discovered that my sunroof had completely shattered. Because I pulled the shade closed, the glass did not fall in to the vehicle so there was no injury sustained. My route is one I do daily and does not include an overpass or overhangs. There was no indication that anything had been thrown/fallen on my roof. There is no other damage to the body/roof. I believe the sunroof spontaneously shattered. When I spoke with my Honda dealer's service department, they transferred me to an outside body shop to repair out of pocket. When I spoke to the dealer's finance office about my warranty, they informed me that no glass repair is covered under my warranty or extended warranty and that I needed to submit under my comprehensive car insurance. My insurance did ultimately cover the damage although they were reluctant as they felt it was a manufacturers defect.

I purchased my 2018 CRV exl in late November 2018. Since then the windshield has been chipped twice (repaired both times) and cracked two other times - requiring windshield replacement at $1,200 (oem) each time. I've driven the same normal paved roads/highways that I've driven for the last 25 years - having only experienced two windshield cracks across all my previous vehicles during all those years. My personal experience combined with accounts from other gen5 Honda CRV owners and observations by the windshield repair shop indicate that gen5 Honda crvs have insufficiently strong/durable oem windshields. As a result I am concerned about safety should my family be in a serious accident. In addition, my insurance agent has informed me that another windshield repair/replacement claim is likely to increase either my insurance premium or deductible - accordingly I paid out-of-pocket for the last chip repair. I believe Honda needs to design a stronger replacement windshield and/or extend the warranties to cover windshield damage.

On 9/23/19 parked the vehicle. Shut off vehicle while still in drive. The vehicle did not alert me that the car was not in park. Got out of car and door locked like everything was okay - no other beeps or notifications. Vehicle rolled out of driveway and hit a tree causing significant rear damage (thankfully did not hit any other vehicle or pedestrian). Brought to Honda dealership and they could not find anything although I explained that the warning indicators work intermittently. Finally on 10/2/19 I videotaped an incident where it did not alert me in anyway when I shut the car off and left in the drive gear (images from video attached). Honda states emergency parking brake should always be engaged; however, this does not fix the fact that the safety notifications are not working as expected. Definitely a vehicle safety issue.

Safety latch of the hood failed and the hood came up while driving in the middle of the road. This happened while accelerating and reaching approximately 45 mph. Thanks to low speed and no traffic I could manage to stop the vehicle without fatal consequences. I have gone to revision in the dealership and I have contacted american Honda, they argued the vehicle passed the mechanical test and they refused any responsibility for the unsafe, poor design of the latching system. It worth to mention that: 1- this vehicle has the hood release inside, accessible for example to kids, but there is no warning indicator at all when the safety latch is activated, or the hood is not fully closed. 2- this vehicle does not have dashboard light warnings similar to the alert for lateral doors or rear door ajar, even though the latter can be significantly less dangerous than a hood opening incident. 3- the hood safety latch clearly functions properly when lifted up under normal circumstances with the car stopped. However, the safety latch fails due to continuous changes in the direction and magnitude of the resultant forces due to vibrations, wind load, etc. This latch cannot be considered a 'safety' device, if it doesn't not function properly under all reasonable conditions. 4- this 2018 year vehicle was purchased new by the current owner, and all maintenance care is updated and always completed by official (I.e. licensed) Honda service centers.

The design of the bottom of the front passenger door is a safety hazard. There is a sharp edge that can cause injury to passengers when entering and exiting the vehicle. My elderly mother received a minor laceration on her leg from this door. The door tried to get my brother's leg numerous times, but he was wearing jeans so no laceration. These occurrences happened in Jan & Feb of 2019 when the vehicle was being used to carry passengers. The vehicle is normally just used for the driver without having passengers.

Tailgate window shattered for no reason. My vehicle was parked in a parking lot. I opened the backseat driver side door to get something from the backseat and within seconds heard a loud pop. I looked up and out the back window and it was completely shattered. It was still all in tact, just shattered. I looked at the window and there was no apparent reason why it would have shattered. When I shut the door a large chunk from the middle fell into the car.

My vehicle was parked with with no trees or bridges around it. When I got into my car and closed the door the sunroof fell in on me. It's was a spiderweb crack across the entire roof. It was 93 degrees and sunny. There was no damage to the roof when I closed the sun roof about 8 hours earlier when I arrived at work. The car has 7K miles on it and has been parked in a garage for past 6 months while I was deployed. There was no impact to cause the damage.

The contact owns a 2018 Honda CR-V. after parking and locking the vehicle, an audible was heard. The contact stated that the alarm sounded even though the vehicle was locked. Additionally, when the vehicle was parked and the door lock button was depressed, the audible sound for the door lock would sound; however, the vehicle was still unlocked. The contact also stated that the display would occasionally flash on and off and then go blank. Also, on several occasions in inclement weather, the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light, the windshield wipers ceased to work. Community Honda lafayette (located at 1407 la 728-8, lafayette, la 70501, (337) 235-9086) stated that the windshield wiper was programmed to slow down when the vehicle was not moving, which was a feature of the vehicle. An appointment was scheduled with the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000. Consumer stated forgot to say as I was going straight on hwy 90- a car was on my right in the turn lane- my car stopped and cops were coming behind- almost slammed are me in the back. Doors not lacking when exited.

The design of the headlights incorporates separate (from lens) chrome trim pieces that are spear-like in shape. The pointed ends of the spears do not sit flush in the headlight lens and are protruding. This causes an unsafe condition every time the car is washed & dried, and when using a 'duster' on the vehicle. Wash mitts get stuck behind the spears which pull the spears out more, increasing the hazard to one's hand. While I have not gotten any actual lacerations from these spears to date, on May 13, 2018 my hand received a 'welt' from the spear. Picture attached for reference.

Takata recall. I had sat through a red light at an intersection and the light gave me a green arrow. I was trying to make a left turn and the at fault driver ran the red light and hit me in the drivers door. My head hit the window and the airbag deployed as I was coming off the window. I was pinned between the window and the airbag. The airbag did not deflate until someone found a pocket knife to cut it so I could sit up. Resulting injuries were to my head, neck, and ribs.
