Same problem happened on 12/27/23. Mechanic cleaned spark plug for #2 cylinder, said that if it comes back on I'll need a new coil, plugs and to clean up something about induction?. Also advised me to take to dealer because only dealer could fix the "software" part of the problem. I brought to dealer, explained this and gave them the paperwork from mechanic. They refused to even look at it and sent me on my way. On 1/10/2024, car shuddered again while stopped at light. Check engine light and wavy road light came on again along with FCW System Failure - same as last time. Car doesn't handle well during this failure. Mechanic had told me that this is a known problem with this vehicle and Honda hasn't fixed it or put a RECALL on it.

Further info I found says the same thing as found on this site: This is a problem with the cars variable cylinder management. It causes the spark plug to degrade, the engine cylinders fill with oil and damages the piston rings. When the engine cylinders misfire while driving, it causes sudden loss of power and an inability to drive. The repairs are very costly. There was a class action lawsuit aimed at this very problem in the 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey - Honda settled the lawsuit March of 2014. Honda extended the warranty and would fix the issue on the existing 2008-2013 Honda Odysseys. Honda has not fixed the problem and they continue to sell vehicles with this known issue and not disclosing it to their customers. It remains a safety issue while driving. Manual states DO NOT DRIVE

Odyssey SE V.6

Have a 2016 Odyssey with around 145k miles. About 1-2 years ago..the blinking CEL started as I was driving on the highway. I had always heard if it's blinking, pull over asap. I had it towed to a local Honda dealer as it was not near my home. Diagnosed as a ignition coil (just 1) that needed replacement. This week, similar issue, same blinking CEL as I was driving and the engine was really rough. Pulled over to a parking area, called the dealership who advised they would not recommend I drive it if I don't have to. Had it towed to dealership. The initial diagnosis is an intake snorkel & spark plugs are fouled. About a $500 fix... Less than a week ago they recommended I replace the EGR Valve which would assist in the vehicle running better, etc.

But, the dealer cautioned me it MIGHT be the piston rings and that could be $3-4k repair bill. Asked dealership if that is an issue with this year model and he said "we see a few"... but I could not get him to commit to more than saying that. So, reading a few forums and it seems as though this time period Odyssey has issues with the spark plugs fouling and piston rings going bad. I don't want to get rid of this Honda just yet... but not too happy about the possibility of paying such a high repair cost for what might be a design/product flaw.

engine misfire and shudder (error p0301, p0303) engine misfire and shudder (error p0301, p0303)

We purchased this Odyssey November 7, 2016. On July 16, 2020 I had to take the car into the Honda dealer. The vehicle jerked violently when I drive from a stop position to first, second and third gears. The dealer informed me that it was due to defective brakes. I paid them $1,500 for the repair but it continued to happen. They informed that they could not duplicate the problems therefore can't fix it.

On April 17, 2021 I have been getting multiple warning lights (fcw, ldw, check engine) which occur with sluggish engine performance. The engine will misfire and not accelerate as it typically does or shudders/jitters trying to accelerate. Diagnostic tool shows P0301 for misfire in cylinder 1 and P0848 for trans fluid pressure switch faulty. The dealer informed that we have defective piston rings which cause spark plugs misfire and foul. This will cost 5K and they will not guaranteed that it will fix it!

My engine problems seems to be similar to the class action suit as per case no. 3:12-cv-1377-si. Unfortunately, it would appear that the defective piston rings issue was not resolved. I'm concerned that any replacement will result in the same issue again with continued driving. Honda dealerships are aware of the issue and offers us very minimal assistance on the repair. I think Honda should be fully liable for selling cars with defective design, especially after the prior class action suit. When this issue occurred, it put my family in an unsafe condition because the engine suddenly began to stutter.

At this point my vehicle is undrivable and this has contributed to financial burden in an already difficult year due to the pandemic. Honda should own this issue for the 2016 model year through full compensation on repairs.
