Less and a year after buying the car, the check engine light came on with an engine misfire code while my wife was out. I limped the van home, woke up early the next day and replaced all the spark plugs. I found out later that the spark plugs had been replaced at 83,600 miles, right before we purchased the van. After much research, I discovered that Honda insists on keeping its stupid VCM system to increase the fuel economy by a couple MPGs by shutting off two cylinders when the power is not needed, which, of course fouls the spark plugs and destroys the piston rings which eventually ruins the engine and requires a rebuild.

Honda knows about this, because they've extended their warranty for this issue for gen 2 and gen 3 odysseys. So, instead of fixing the issue, they simply continue on and eventually extend the warranty requiring customers to deal the fallout. I had to buy and install a VCM muzzler to trick the system into thinking it wasn't fully warm so that the VCM wouldn't kick on and destroy the engine. Honda never again.
