CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

Elantra GLS 1.8L

I purchased this car used and at the time it had really cheap Primewell tires on it. The noise wasn't too bad and I thought it was just the tires. I purchased new Continental tires that are almost silent and the problem/noise slowly got worse. I took it to the dealership who told me that it needed a new bearing/hub for the right front wheel. Left it for the day and was called soon after and told that the noise did not go away and that it needs a new transmission. Thankfully, this is fully covered under warranty and so was the rental car for the week it took to replace it.

Still, a "Certified" car with 40,000 miles should NOT need a new transmission.

Elantra GLS 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4,000 miles

AT about 4000 rpm I noticed a humming sound from either engine or transmission. Sounds like a turbine !

Update from Aug 3, 2014: The question is not about RPMs. It's about when the car had 4000 miles driven on odometer a turbine, shinning sound seemed to have appeared coming from the tranny. The sound of the engine or tranny humms, whines and doesn't sound smooth......

If you have a 2012, 13 or 14, do you get that sound also. Let me know please.
