The engine had mild ticking for a few months (not audible in warm weather, slightly audible in cold), but there was no problem driving it and a mechanic just recommended high-viscosity oil. We even took a car trip that was four hours each way... and two days later, it stalled on the way into work. Took it to the local Hyundai dealership and they said "yeah, you need a new engine, we could replace it for eight or nine thousand, but maybe you could find someone else to do it for more like six thousand if you shop around." Engines are also on back order, so we might have had to wait months for a replacement.
I had paid $12500 for the car at the start of 2018 (lightly used, only 13k miles on it), so $9k to replace an engine was a non-starter. Took it back home and it stalled FOUR TIMES on a 15-minute drive, so now it's such a safety issue that I'm not driving it anywhere. Prior to this I'd had no major maintenance problems, just kept up with oil changes and recommended replacements like brake pads, and I had hoped to drive it well past 100k miles-- instead, it didn't even make it to 70k. The Hyundai dealership offered me $500 wholesale for it but said Facebook Marketplace was probably my best option to see if anyone wanted it for more. Fantastic way to stand behind their products there.
It's absolutely disgusting that Hyundai hasn't issued a recall for this, given how many people I see complaining of similar ticking-to-failure issues over in the "Engine ticking" category. I'm never buying a Hyundai again and recommend you don't either.
I have a 2015 Hyundai Elantra that recently stalled twice while I was driving. The service representative at the dealer, Jim Ellis in Atlanta, states that if they can't replicate the issue it can't be repaired. I am mortified that Hyundai wants to shift its responsibility to me by focusing on its inability to replicate an issue. Hyundai’s focus should be on customer safety and taking ownership of an issue that precipitates accidents that kill people, which includes taking preventative measures (e.g. replacing any parts that are attributable to stalling) to restore my sense of safety while driving a car they manufactured.
I have notified the manager, and will escalate if necessary. If the dealer refuses to repair my car, I will consider other options.
