CarComplaints.com Notes: There's no way around it, the Cherokee's transmission is junk. There's no other explanation for why a vehicle, usually with under 40,000 miles, would have so many complaints

This is the second incident since purchasing the vehicle new in 2014. Less than a year after purchase the transmission had to be replaced. This incident the Jeep lost all power and would not go into either drive or park creating an extremely unsafe situation. Was told it had to do with a recall and needed a new pcu. That was two months ago! I am still without my Jeep and have now been told it needs another new transmission.
As I am driving the vehicle suddenly loses power and stops. The vehicle tugs and pulls back as I am driving and then loses power and indicates me to shift to park. On some occasion's the vehicle completely stops in the middle of the road.
Service shifter light popped on while I was driving at 40pmh on a city street. Drove the 2 miles home and parked vehicle, turned off engine and back on and it disappeared. Less that 40,000 miles on vehicle.
In the past few months every time I go turn on the car, it seems as uf the the struggles to start. So, when I turn the key to the middle position then turn it hard over, the car will start. If may take one time or several times to get the car started. Not battery because windows roll down, radio comes on, and so on. As of today it seem there is no connection happening.

The "service shifter" warning coming up during drive or when parked, the engine refuse to start or the gear refuse to shift when this happened. It's very nondeterministic and could cause serious accident.
The warning light came on multiple times (first day 10/4/2019 driving locally), regarding servicing the transmission, brake and airbag after starting and in a non-moving mode. On the second day of ownership 10/5/2019, I took it to the closest Jeep dealership to have them check on the warning light. The tech advisor gave me a print out of all the error codes showing (quite a few). On the sixth day 10-10-2019, I only had driven it locally when the transmission slipped out of the drive gear when I was at a stop sign. The drive transmission wasn't engaging when I pressed the gas pedal. I put it in 'park' and then back into 'drive', and it then went forward. I drove home, and I parked the Jeep in my yard. I didn't drive it again with a real concern that the Jeep wasn't safe to drive and not wanting to get stranded along a road somewhere. In 11/2019, I next drove the Jeep in my attempt to get it to the dealership service department to have the diagnostics done to find out the exact issues. The transmission did the same thing and slipped out of 'drive' in busy stop and go traffic in route on a 5 lane highway at a traffic light after stopping and giving gas to move forward. This time it took four attempts (placing in park and then drive) before the Jeep would drive forward. I made it to the dealership on a prayer five minutes further down the road. The final diagnosis (12/18-2019) was that the Jeep needs a transmission/engine wiring harness. 'there is a brake in the transmission control module circuit for communication and depending on how the engine flex's, the communication line drops out and causes the tcm to go offline'. on 4/12/2020, I took photos of the code flashing (see attached images). It wouldn't start. One week later, it started and I drove it in my yard to park it farther out of my main driveway. There it has sat for a few months.
While driving on a highway, service shifter warning displayed and all indicator lights were lit (park, neutral, reverse, drive). This caused panic and the driver pulled over to turn off the engine. A dealership diagnosis is short in wiring. This manufacturer defect has caused wrecks and needs to be recalled by Jeep.
2 issues. (1)) transmission doesn't shift properly. Coming from a higher speed and break ie slowing down and then accelerating there is a delay. The Jeep doesn't know what gear to be in. I have been almost rear ended, honked at, swerved around because the Jeep won't speed up properly. (2) gear shifter lights don't function properly. The gear shifter was already replaced once under factory warranty and the same issue has happened again
My Jeep expertly three times now while driving 30 to 40 mph automatically shifts into neutral. I get an error message on the dash that tell me basically to stop and restart vehicle. I'm also experiencing all the lights on my shifter are on/red at the same time. The only way to make the shifter lights appear normal is to turn the car off and restart.
On 2 occassions my vehicle stalled while driving/in motion and transmission disengaged almost causing a serious mva. All lights on the shifter turned on and the a "service shifter" message appeared on screen. I took vehicle in for service to route 18 Jeep of East brunswick, NJ. The dealer ran a diagnostic tests and found the tipm computer malfunctioned. I did some research and found the previous year Jeep/ crysler modes had the same problems and a recall was issued on the tipm. Concerning as this issue may cause serious mva and jeopardize safety.
While driving my Jeep revs into high gear, then all of the symbols on my dash light up and then my Jeep jolts and then shuts off. I have to put it into park and wait about 30 seconds and then try to turn it back on, sometimes it takes 2-3 times to turn back on.
Its doing just what the recall stated..the engine light is on and then it cuts off while I'm driving and telling me to shift to park to restart and continues to do this several times before I get to a safe destination
Emergency break got locked when the vehicle was parked. Car wouldn't start and had to get it towed to Jeep dealership. Jeep said it was the emergency break module and wiring. It appeared to be so sort of leakage in the compartment but no water was found near module.
Vehicle shows error message on dashboard screen stating "service transmission" recall came out in 1st quarter 2020 stating that it was a computer error and would be fixed by dealership. Took to dealership for recall, and then the message started coming back after a month. Took vehicle to a transmission shop and found that it was a computer issue again, not a transmission problem. It appears that the original recall did not correct the problem.
While driving at a slow rate, the ebrake engaged by itself, bringing the car to a stop and rendering it undriveable. The ebrake would not release when pushing the button down or when shutting the vehicle off and restarting it. Vehicle needed to be towed away.
I've had to replace the oil housing filter and light switch and now the shifter light is coming on. This car is a lemon and needs a recall. This is all highway.
I started my car and a service shifter message came up. I was parked on a flat cement pad in my driveway. I attempted to put my car in reverse, and it was very hard to move the shifter to reverse. I stopped trying and turned off my car. When I started it again the message was gone.
Water has leaked in to my vehicle and caused issues with the electronic parking brake to short out and need to be serviced. The epb now automatically engages itself when putting the vehicle in park, causing us to be stranded. Upon investigation, it appears as though numerous individuals with my vehicle that have a sunroof experience the same issue, possibly due to drainage tubes installed by Jeep that they did not make owners aware of.
