CarComplaints.com Notes: How many transmission complaints can a new vehicle really receive? You'd be surprised. Unless you're a 2015 Cherokee owner, then I bet you're not surprised at all.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
An error that continues to come and go is to 'service shifter.' It is apparent there are moments that the shifter sputters, the car will not shift gears (automatic) and refuse to accelerate. The check engine light also comes on for this. Deal ships do not seem to act aware of this issue, but it seems extremely prevalent online. It appears to be based on a faulty shift in the vehicle or bad wiring. However, the deal ships act like nothing is wrong but will change it for you for around $7,000. The car sputtering and refusing to shift while trying to accelerate is extremely dangerous from faulty components and needs to be investigated. It's clear a recall is needed for this.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle hesitated with the service transmission message displayed on the instrument panel. The failure recurred while driving up an incline. The cause of the failure was not determined. Gulfgate Chrysler located at 7250 gulf fwy, houston, tx (281) 477-6767, was contacted and notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 20V343000 (power train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 79,000.
My child purchased vehicle (used) from dealer (mi.- approx.43,820).discovered powertrain issues w/ vehicle that I believe are related to previous recall (re:Chrysler recall # S55). While driving vehicle it will go into neutral and engine revs up, resulting in loss of forward motion. This happens intermittently.the check engine light and service trans. May come on, but will go out. Vehicle was taken back to dealer regarding the problem. Serviceman reccomended replacing transmission at a cost of over $5000. Prior recall service on vehicle (11/2016) shows the problem as the transaxle range sensor wire harness, but the PCM and the tcm was re-programmed. This was done twice according to the vehicle records. We spoke with the dealer and mfg.about replacing the wiring harness, since the recall indicated that could possibly be the problem due to bad crimping. Took the vehicle back to the dealer to diagnose the problem. They indicated that they checked the wiring harness and found no problem. It appears the dealer and mfg.not willing to take ownership of problem, leaving the consumer (my daughter) with a continuing intermittent issue and the cost of resolving it...(very disappointed!) also, the vehicle still has the trouble code that they can't clear (code= P1db7) note that the vehicle had less than 100,000 mi when this issue was bought to their attention, but mfg. Won't honor powertrain warranty because she is not the original owner. Dealer willing to replace trans. At cost of over $5000...
Our 9 speed transmission causes the car to jolt and jerk every time we drive it when switching gears or when at a stop and then driving. Also, does the same with the star/stop feature. This can cause a major accident if not fixed! Jeep dealership says they get multiple complaints about this issue weekly since the 9 speed transmission has many issues with it and was used on 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee. We have taken the car to the dealership over 10 times throughout the past couple years to get the transmission fixed but the only way to solve this issue is to replace it with an 8 speed transmission.

Transmission has issues. Hard shifts, slow shifts, jerks, and hesitates. Feels like it is low on fluid, also feels like someone rear ended us at times. Have actually slammed on the brakes thinking we were in a wreck. Has happened many many times. Vehicle has been in shop numerous times with no fix.
At startup of vehicle in park and keying on, powertrain problems with transmission. Vehicle has check engine light, 4WD temporarily unavailable, service park brake, service transmission, flashing traction control all happening at the same time. While in motion, transmission will shift but is very rough and starts in 4th gear. Also the 'd' is flashing and odometer flashes while in motion.
The vehicle sometimes hesitates to accelerate when stepping on the gas after coming to a rolling stop or a complete stop. This happens with the auto start/stop off. I just purchased the vehicle and this happens almost every other time I drive.
Vehicle jumps back when exiting off interstate at high speed to lower speed. Once yielded or stopped and hit gas pedal to move, vehicle jumps, pops, doesn't engage to move forward on acceleration. When stopping at a sign, have to be completely stopped so vehicle kicks back then when accelerating, there is a hesitation. Vehicle kinda leaps forward at faster speed then what pressure is on the gas pedal. This has happened numerous times.
Has check engine light on and says service park brake. The traction and parking brake light is on. It will not shift into gear. Jerks really bad and makes a loud noise when you can get it to shift. My Jeep was parked out front of my house.
Shifter--the vehicle is rendered inoperable when shifting from park to reverse or to drive. While we've tried to find a pattern, the issue's recurrence is unpredictable and has yet to be diagnosed despite countless trips to and conversations with our dealer and with Chrysler. This is the second report we've filed about this vehicle with the NHTSA (6/19/18). Summary: The dash displays/flashes "service shifter"/all other component lights, warning bells ring and every gear light on the shifter lever illuminates. Some incidents prevent the vehicle from shutting off/restarting or for the brake pedal to depress. We've learned we must shut the car off and restart, sometimes 2-3 times, in order for it to become operable. The check engine light stays on for varying amounts of time. The issue has occurred while driving and for our safety we must stop, shut down and restart; it also has occurred while attempting to pull out at an intersection or out of our driveway, both of which are frightening since we find ourselves stuck in the path of oncoming traffic. Acceleration issues--in addition, abrupt lurching forward, hesitations after stopping and lack of acceleration power (gas pedal is to the floor but car won't pick up speed) have occurred. We have had it to two dealers only to be told that the check engine light must be on to diagnose; the one time it was tested, the event wasn't active and the codes were stored (over 40 were displayed) and of no help. They only will say that the car is losing communications and despite all that's been done to this point, can't guarantee they'll ever be able to determine a fix for it. The PCM has been reprogrammed four times; tcm has been replaced/updated four times; shift lever assembly replaced; shift lever greased; trans axle wiring harness replaced two times; shift lever bezel/wiring replaced.
Immediately after starting vehicle, all lights on shifter (P R N D) turn red. Service shifter appears in display and remains until vehicle is turned off. Will not display odometer or any other info while service shifter is displayed.
Zf 9 speed transmission, it is not safe to operate in a low speed city driving condition, at a low speed when I press gas car wont move and then suddenly car jumps. Just like when you release clatch in a manual car at a high RPM,
This has happed to over 20 times. When putting my automatic transmission in reverse, the screen displays ' service shifter' I have taken to two dealers and was told they could not duplicate because code resets itself. I am worried as I am a senior citizen and need a reliable vehicle. It seems the dealer can't be bothered to find the problem
Car loses power in the first 3-7 minutes of driving. I am starting my car, pulling off, and the car loses power, says something putting the car in parking gear. It has stopped in the middle of the street. This is dangerous. It has happened multiple times. It only happens when I first start the car in the morning. It does not happen teh rest of the day.
Transmission lurches when shifting going down the road. Hesitant to start moving from a complete stop. When coasting down hill feels as if transmission shifts in to neutral and vehicle begins to accelerate. All instances were on city streets.
Not switching gears properly. There's a hard jerk/thrust while trying to automatically switch gears. Thought I got rear ended how hard it jerked! while turning on a very busy highway car has went from drive to neutral several times while driving. Which can cause a major accident. Almost did! this has happened on several occasions can't recall specific dates and times but just recently on 02/09/2020
Vehicle hesitates from stop and then after a couple of seconds lurches forward. Very concerning when pulling out into traffic as you are never sure how quickly it will accelerate. Has been occurring since we bought the vehicle.
