transmission failure, check engine light on

I've had my POS Jeep for 7 months in and out of the dealer 4 times with the same damn problem that they claim they "can't duplicate" BS. I've complained about the hard shifting, jerky acceleration, the wobble, the car loves to lunge forward at any given time and I can go on and on.....

My car was in the shop 3 weeks ago and they said everything is perfectly fine with my car. So yesterday as I was driving the car, my perfectly fine car literally shuts off and every warning lights starts flashing and the says "Service Park Brake". My brakes locked up and I had no brakes. Thank god I was driving slow because if I were on the highway going over 60 I would've died!!!! The car was towed to the dealer and I just lost it on them! I have to call this morning to find out what's happening with my car. I just filed a complaint with FCA, they didn't seem to care or were surprised with my issue. I contacted a lawyer and I want out of this POS death trap they call a JEEP!!!!!!

I will not stop until I get out of this car, if any of you are in Long Island, contact me because this should be reported to the news. I've read a lot of complaints of the same problem happening last night and this is BS that the FCA is waiting for someone to die to correct this problem.

Update from Aug 5, 2015: The dealer called and they are replacing the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) aka "the brain of the car" really the brain of my car died while driving!!!!! How do I know if anything else will die while driving and I guess I have to hope it won't be me next time I drive this POS.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,500 miles

Jeep is 7 months old with 17,500 miles. First noticed problem when braking for light while traveling at 50 mph+. Stop/Start Service light came on as did Engine Warning Light. When accelerating, car would not exceed 60 mph with Tach moving to 4000 rpms. Problem corrected by stopping car, waiting a minute, and restarting. Engine light stayed on and Stop Start Service warning intermittent. Have had acceleration restriction issue several times over two week period.

Took car to Jeep dealer for service. They claimed it was a programming issue and stated car was fixed. Within two days, Engine warning light returns, Went back to dealer who checked it out and provided standard Chrysler line about if all modules are updated, likely requires transmission replacement. Here is the cute part, the Service Dept referred me back to the Jeep dealer where I purchased the vehicle. I have been serviced by this Jeep dealer for 8+ years and three Jeeps but they seem not to want to handle it.

I go back to the dealer where I purchased the Jeep and spoke with the Service Manager about the situation. When I mentioned the Service Dept referral, he rolled his eyes as though they are aware of the problem and no one wants to deal with it. Am now awaiting this Service Dept's 2nd opinion and possibly Chrysler's approval. The Service Mgr. indicated they will need to check wiring in addition to the programming prior to going to Chrysler. Driving Jeeps since 1990 never experienced this situation before. Service Dept hand off makes me wary of what lies ahead.

2015 Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk. Brought it in for an oil change and they updated the transmission module. Next day engine light on and not shifting. They told me to bring it back in. After 3 weeks, went in to pick it up, low and behold they had replaced the transmission. No clue that it needed a new transmission. Still running jumpy and not shifting correctly. I think that Chrysler needs to make this good!! I can't believe that I have a brand new vehicle and I am afraid to drive. I think that it is unsafe. Having other issues, but I will put that in another complaint.

My Jeep was functioning perfectly until I took it in for service based on the recall notice. The 'quality software update' caused the transmission to fail. After trying to replace the modules without success, the entire transmission now has to be replaced.

I hope the new transmission fixes the issues, but am hugely disappointed in the brand. Jeep definitely needs to better test these updates before they're rolled out.

Trying to be patient but dealer took a week to get us a rental car. We were told it was the software that caused the transmission to go. If we have them give us a new one who is to say the same thing will not happen. I would like to see them correct the software problem and get on top of all these transmissions. We know it can be done. Other brands have 9 speed transmissions. I believe in giving them a chance but be honest about the problem and then make it GOOD!. BUT THEY NEED TO GET ON THIS NOW!!!!!!.

It's sharp looking, but you can't travel on looks!

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

We began leasing this Jeep in April 2015.. here it is June 8th and as I write this my Jeep is sitting at the dealership waiting on a new transmission!

There is 2300 miles on the Jeep and last Tuesday, June 2nd I had just dropped my girls off at school and daycare and was headed into work when I was stopped at a light. The light turned green and I went to go but the Jeep cut off. I put it in park and pushed crank button. I accelerated and that's when it wouldn't change gears and the RPM's began to climb. I immediately pulled over, turned it off and then cranked it back up a minute later. I pulled back out onto the road and that's when I noticed when I would apply the brakes the RPM's would increase! I made it to work but when I left work this same thing happened again.

The next morning we took the Jeep to our dealership where we bought it. They gave us a rental and told us they would call us when they had a diagnosis. Friday, June 5th my husband called to find out what was going on and that's when they told him they had to replace the transmission. They said they would be putting in a brand new transmission and that I should have it back by the end of next week (by June 12th). I am only leasing this vehicle because we do not put many miles on my vehicle and at this point I would rather just have a new one, or another one with 2000 miles that doesn't have this transmission issue. I am afraid once I get it back there will be more problems to come.. we will see and I will update this as soon as I get it back!

Update from Jun 8, 2015: I forgot to mention.. when the car cut off at the light and I had to put it in park to crank it back up- that's when I noticed the check engine light was on and it continued to stay on...

Update from Jun 18, 2015: They ended up replacing my transmission which only took a few days. They assured me this was a brand new transmission from the manufacturer. I have had my Jeep back almost a week now and no problems have been noticed. Seems to be driving fine! Chrysler did contact me and said they would be cutting us a check to reimburse us for 1 full months payment just for having to deal with this mess. That was nice of them! I just hope no other problems come up!

I was driving on the freeway and I went to pass a semi, tried to accelerate and all of a sudden the car slipped out of gear and the check engine light came on and then said service transmission. Felt like my clutch was slipping badly, so I nursed it to the dealer. They called me one day saying it needed a new transmission and they had to order it and I would get my car back in 5 days. I'm crossing my fingers, the car only has 5k miles and want my wife to stop saying "I told you not to buy American".

Update from Jun 18, 2015: The dealer called me the next day to tell me that my new car needs a new transmission, and that I could pick up a loaner on Monday. They had to order the transmission from chystler and it would take a week to get here, then a couple of days to replace it. They called on Wednesday to tell me it was ready.so all in all I'm happy but this should not happen to a new car.

Brand new 2015 Jeep Cherokee. 2200 miles. Owned it for barely 2 months. Pulling out of a parking lot and my car hesitated to shift into gear leaving me stranded in on coming traffic. I was almost T-Boned. Got down the road a bit and my car started bucking & jerking, would not go above 25mph, the check engine light came on, service transmission and start/stop error. It was towed to the dealership where they found a coolant leak, a problem with the fuel injection, replaced gaskets, swapped injectors and claimed they couldn't duplicate the hesitation or wobbling I was experiencing. They had my car for 16 days while they made repairs. These cars are lemons. They need to be recalled.

So when they checked our codes from Check engine light and transmission notifications it was decided we need a different transmission. I was told a new transmission, but later found out it is a re-manufactured one.

This is what the paperwork says the technician and I have reported: Hesitation, changing gears on its own, trying to break and the vehicle takes off (my main concern) Major drivability issues it went into LIMP MODE and engine and trans lights came on.

P07D9-00 Gear 8 shift incorrect ratio = replace transmission

So they replaced, retrained per warranty bulletin. Put it through QUICK LEARN and gave it back to us. On 05-15-2015, we will see.

Seems better, shifts more distinctly and smoothly yet firm.

Update from May 25, 2015: 05-24-2015 told sister what I had read on this website about others with similar issues. Told her I was glad it was fixed and she said it may not be. It is still LUNGING and feeling unsafe she says, but she is a girl. I haven't driven it since it started acting up again so I can't confirm it yet and only let dealer know it may have issues, and as per Standard Operating Procedures was told it still needs to learn.

This case is in Bogotá Colombia, being the first in the country as informed by the Dealer DEMCAUTOS.

Two times the Cherokee showed in the display Failure in Transmission, without traction, power loss and the Check Engine lighted ON. Dealer took the decision for changing the Whole system (Transmission and Selenoide), and currently (05/09/2015) things is not working. I don't have the solution yet, and the car continues in hands of Dealer DEMCAUTOS since 1 month ago.

Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,800 miles

Went in for last update flash for tranny and left dealership. 2800 miles on a v6 Trailhawk. One mile down the road rpms go up to 3000 - 4000 car starts loosing power, and check engine light comes on. Nothing like being in heavy traffic trying to keep from getting in a accident. Manage to limp back to dealership and they diagnose it telling me the tranny needs to be replaced and the issues I had should have shown up before I got the car back. Have a ongoing case with Chrysler on this, good luck with yours if you are doing the same. They take there sweet ass time getting back to you and if I call "my case worker" is not in and will call me back "AT THEIR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE"

REALLY..... THEIRS.......

The dealership has been aces getting this thing repaired and follow concerns I've had. How this tranny ever got to market ill never understand because it has ruined a otherwise awesome car. Have 500 miles on new tranny but still feel its not ready for prime time yet. I'll update as needed with any issues.

Update from Aug 11, 2015: Well I had to toss the towel in on this car. It still has small other bugs and still does not feel like it is shifting right to me even though Jeep says it is all good. This was the PERFECT CAR for me in every way otherwise. My son has a v4 limited that he has had no problems with. I cried evey time I got in his, when I visted him to go to a DC ComCon Convention, because I really loved my trailhawk, I stepped up to my retirement plan of a truck. My dealer worked with me and i got a 2015 ram v6 8 speed crew cab Big Horn. If they had put the 8 speed tranny they have on the Ram into the Jeep there would be a lot of returning customers to buy Cherokees. The shifting diff. is night and day and my wife even feels like she is in a SAFE vehicle again. If ya look at a Ram crew cab get the 8in screen and premium sound. BEST FACTORY STEREO IVE EVER HEARD.for it being a factory stereo. Ive not felt the usual need to replace the speakers right away as i usually do. Have 1700 miles on the Ram and it is solid so far...... I wish you all luck who stick with the Cherokee........ I was just fed up with the thing always going to the shop for check ups, recalls, and repairs.....

Cherokee Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,900 miles

I took delivery on 1/15 and for first month no issue except that occasionally I would sense a "slip or hesitation" in the transmission that surprised me as I expected the shifting to be totally smooth and I excepted as normal but in retrospect was the first warning sign.

With about 1,900 miles and about March 13 as I shifted into reverse that was an awful "clunk and thunk" and vehicle wouldn't move and the "lights" came on - check engine, service transmission, temporary loss of 4WD. After turning off and ignition and restarting several times it finally seemed to clear but the check engine light remained on. This was late Friday afternoon and I took vehicle to the dealer and they reset the codes About 2 hours later the problem recurred and I only got to go by turning ignition off and on several times.

On Monday I brought it back to the dealer and they kept a day or so and I'm unsure of what they did but it seemed fine when I got if back for a couple of days when the problem cropped up again. The came and got the car from my home and had it 3 days during which time they replaced the ABS controller.

It then drove well - other than the initial hesitation and slippage I was now paying more attention to - for another 2 or 3 days. Then not only did the problem recur but more "lights" came on and the transmission wouldn't engage forward or reverse and left me stranded. The dealer came and picked up the vehicle and it is now going on to 4 weeks in his shop with no apparent solution in sight. The only thing positive is that they've given me a 2014 Jeep Compass to use that I like very much and which shifts very smoothly.

The dealer has been in contact with Chrysler Star Service and from what I hear I'm not too impressed that Star "has a clue" which I find astounding considering all the complaints on your site of similar problems. By the way I heard about your site from the dealer who went on line to research. Chrysler has apparently done little to advise the dealers of what appears to me a software, hardware, mechanical or combination thereof fundamental design or manufacturing defect.

To this point I have been patient as I truly believe the dealer will do all they can to resolve the issue but I have advised them that I think we should be invoking "lemon law" and asking for a new replacement.

Update from Apr 28, 2015: After 4 full weeks at the dealers I got the vehicle back yesterday and sees fine but time will tell.

Chrysler had the dealer install a new transmission valve body that apparently controls solenoids. According to Chrysler's computer diagnosis the problem is now corrected.

Cherokee Limited 3.2L

  • CVT transmission
  • 3,504 miles

First issue was at 3000 miles back in February. While driving the service transmission warning came on along with the check engine light. Loss of power, had to pull over & restart, service transmission warning went off but check engine was still on but was able to drive it, Dealership was closed for the weekend & all lights went off on Dunfay evening & was driving normal so we chalked it up as a fluke.

Fast forward a month later, I took the car into the dealer for the same issue that occurred again last Sunday, lights still on. I was informed there is a recall that is coming out dated February 12th, 2015 for the TCM & PCM software to help prevent potential durability issues with the transmission. The service department was certain this would correct my issue. They noted that they received an error code of P0711-0 which is the transmission temp sensor. They did the software update & reset but did nothing for the error code issue.

The next day, Saturday I'm driving & again lost power & same issues!! Grrr back to the dealer again tomorrow 3rd time this has happened & only 3500 miles. We bought this brand new in October. Beyond annoyed, will be looking into lemon law.

Update from Apr 24, 2015: Transmission was replaced at 4,200 miles by the dealer I purchased from. Contacted Chrysler to complain and look into lemon law, was provided a case manager who responded like she was reading from a script. She kept referring me to various people who were also not helpful. I understand the Powertrain is covered for 100,000 miles under warranty however the last instance I had with the transmission failure there were no indication lights or warning lights to indicate the transmission failure.. NOT COOL!! I also am leasing this POS and am liable for mileage, the dealer had to pickup my vehicle and drive it 52 miles to their shop to repair and drive it 52 miles back to me. Case Manager Jessica, took 3 days to look into possible reimbursement, she calls me back to say contact your dealer. How is this a dealer issue when it all stems from the warranty? DO NOT BUY A JEEP OR A CHRYSLER OWNED VEHICLE.. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A JOKE!! Dealer is awesome.. Manufacturer Sucks!

Dealer sealed the seam & dried out the harness & the warning lights did not activate. It has been a 1 1/2 weeks since & everything is functioning as it should. DROVE FOR A WEEK THINGS GET SOMEWHAT SMOOTHER BUT STILL SEEMS CONFUSED ON WHICH GEAR OR WHAT GEAR IT SHOULD BE IN. PARKED IT A WEEK FOR XMAS AND WENT ON A CRUISE, CAME BACK AND ROUGH SHIFTS AND CLUNKING SOUNDS, DROVE 2 MORE WEEKS ON MY DAILY ROUTINE AND HAD ISSUES WITH POOR QUALITY / ROUGH SHIFTS, STILL GET THE SMELL LIKE THINGS WERE HOT, TRANS TEMP GAUGE AROUND 208 WHICH IS HIGH FOR ANY TRANS, THEN COME TO A STOP AND DASH LIGHTS FLASH TRANS SHIFTER PROBLEM , NO POWER, ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON NO GO. CYCLE THE KEY 5 TIMES TO CHECK / CLEAR CODE (OLD CHRYSLER TRICK) NOTHING CHANGES- CAR GOES INTO LIMP IN MODE AND CAN'T ACCELERATE. FINALLY CYCLED THE TRANSFER CASE INTO NEUTRAL AND IT GOES BACK INTO SHIFTING BUT NO POWER AND CK ENG LIGHT STILL ON, CLUNKS AND SLAMMED INTO GEARS.

DRIVE TO JEEP DEALER ASAP AND THEY SAY IT WAS NOT A RELEARN ISSUE BUT A TRANS FAILURE...BEEN AT THE DEALER 10 DAYS NOTHING BEING DONE CALLED JEEP CUSTOMER CARE -WHAT A JOKE- NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING TO HELP ME. NO RENTAL NO WERE DOING ALL WE CAN NOPE NOTHING...I HAVE HAD TO INITIATE ALL PHONE CALLS TO DEALER AND SELLING DEALER AND CORP. Cherokee Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 362 miles

Bought this new vehicle on 12-31-2014 and the first failure was at 362 miles. First problem: 1-13-2015-driving in city and dash board lights flash with a check engine light on, says start / stop malfunction, needs service. Took it to the dealer and they flashed the system with a new firmware update. Second problem: 1015-2015 at 416 miles-pulling out into traffic, dash flashed 4X4 malfunction. Couldn't engage any gears, only able to rev the engine to high RPM. Had to shut the engine off and on several times before I could get the transmission to engage so I could move the vehicle out of the middle of the street. Check engine light was on. Dealer said it was a bad PCM module, had it replaced and they test drove car for a week. Picked up the vehicle and had another failure after driving about 15 miles. Car back at the dealer, only 611 miles on it. I called Chrysler Care and opened a case.

Update from Jan 23, 2015: Updated 1-23-2015: Dealer is saying that they suspect a defective electric wiring harness grounding problem in the vehicle.

Update from Jan 31, 2015: 1/31/2015: after opening a case with Chrysler, their Jeep Cherokee engineers worked with my local dealer to investigate and correct the problem. They believe it is a grounding issue and after inspecting every ground connection on the vehicle, this is what they discovered. There was a concern with circuit Z904 (G04). They removed the radiator fan assembly to gain adequate access to Z904, with further inspection, they found that the ground bolt to Z904 to block was stripped out causing an intermittent high resistance in the circuit. They removed the bolt and relocated the ground approximately 2 inches to the rear of the engine block, back from the original grounding location. So far, there is been no return of the problems describe in my complaint. I will file another complaint if the problem returns.

Update from May 21, 2015: Turned over my new 2015 Jeep Cherokee back to Chrysler and received a full refund under CA lemon laws. My stressful 5 month ordeal is finally over. Just bought a new 2016 Acura RDX, beautiful vehicle.
