CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

December 2007 - my 06 Jeep Commander started with electrical issues. Everytime, I would hear a click, than all the lights in my dash go off, than back on.. since then it's done this several times, along with a small puddle of water in my right passenger side. I've brought the vehicle to the dealer and they've done everything but look or fix the problem. They've replace sinoids and shifters (all under warranty) but nothing having to do with the electrical. My vehicle has never stalled, but lately this electrical issue is happening more than ever. My dealer has told me they can't do anything more and to file lemon law ~ this was checked into but because I'm over my mileage I can't really do much. The worst part about this whole mess is I bought this vehicle to feel safe, and now I feel that this is the worst car on the road. Chrsyler should not be leaving there customers out to dry if this problem exists in so many of the same. Take some responsibility.. we gave you our money.. give us what we paid for!

Reference complaints 10244597, 10247128. Today, driving in the rain, lights dimmed and car hesitated, eventually stalling while in motion. While we were at a stop, the car again stalled and took several tries to restart. I no longer drive with the children in the car, and have not since the previous incident at 61K. I have tried contacting Jeep through my dealer, with no response. Today I sent an email via their website, however, I am not hopeful of any response. This will be the final time I will file a complaint, as I have called the bank and told them to come and get the car. I can only hope that the person who considers purchasing my car, as I am sure another unscrupulous salesman will put the car up for sale, does his or her research and finds the complaints I have filed here and with the pa attorney general's office.

Additional problems reference ODI complaint #10244597. Received car back from dealership ran fine for two weeks. The car is now stalling on the highway at 40 mph near our home. Thank god I was able to get the car to the side of the road. Then the park assist service light came on and went off again. I got the car home. My husband took it out. The transmission was slipping and not shifting into higher gear. Today taking the kids to the bus it stalled again. When I was able to restart, I put my foot on the gas and the car hesitate, almost causing an accident. I have pretty much decided on voluntary repossession, as my kids are worth more than the deficient balance.

Additionally, the rear seat belt has let go and caused my son to hit his face on the back seat. Problems with seat belt latch sliding so that belt will not hook. Cannot see when backing up when my 5 kids are in the car. Tire pressure light comes on often, as does the air bag light. Exterior headlights are tilted so that they look like highbeams. This car is a danger.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. While driving 30 mph, the instrument panel warning indicators suddenly began flashing and then completely dimmed. Afterwards, the engine completely shut off as well. The weather conditions were not a factor. The contact stated that the vehicle restarted immediately. The engine light illuminated but then shut off once he arrived at the dealer. The dealer could not find any failures. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 18,000.

My 2006 Jeep Commander 5.7L sometimes loses all the displays in the front panel dash board. Everything goes out. My A/C will not turn on. No radio, etc. This happens intermittently, like something is loose. It has never happened at night yet, so I am not sure if I also lose my headlights, but anything on the dashboard is off, no gas gauge, no speedometer, no temp gauge, etc. It has happened 5 times already. Is there a recall to 2006 Jeep Commanders that address this problem?

Our 06 Jeep Commander has been a nightmare since the day we purchased it used with 14K miles on it in 3/07. We continue to have problems with the dash lights coming on, stalling just today 7/22- the lights lit up and the air conditioner quit working!!! no fan no blower... nothing. It has been brought in for the recall for this but it keeps happening. Oh and did I mention that autopark Jeep in cary, nc sold me a lemon/buyback.... they gave me the carfax report after 30 visits to the service dept.... fool me once, fool me twice... I am hoping that Jeep will buy it back again for this complete lemon!! I know have 37K on it and the service dept was talking that they did not know if Jeep would cover the work.... they can keep it..

This is an update of my previous post. My 2006 3.7 liter Commander 4X4 has been at the dealer since Monday the 7th. When I took it in it had been stalling now and then, the engine light was on and the display "service park assist" had came on the day before I took it in. On the way to the dealer, it shut down no breaks, steering, nothing. The dealer tested it and said it gave them a code U1400 which was the tcm module. They replaced it and told me to come and get it on June 9th. I picked it up and on the way home, going up a slight incline about a block fro the dealer, it shut down again, and started rolling backward down the hill, and all I could do was pull the emergency break and pray that it still worked, it did. After three tries, I got it started and took it back to the dealer, who put a computer on it as soon as I got there, they told me I would have to get a ride home, and the next day called and said it needed ECM module, they also told me that they contacted Chrysler and they had a 1000 piece backlog on them. I asked them what I should do for Transport, and they told me I should call Chrysler because the car was unsafe to drive. They also told me that there had been a major recall on the 2006 4.7 liter Commander for the same problem, but not the 3.7 models. The dealership has been great, but Chrysler has been unreal to deal with, they simply do not care about the customer, and have been no help. I called the dealer today to let them know that Chrysler told me the part would be ready for delivery on July 18th, but my guess is that if there's 1000 backordered, it will be some time before I will get mine. I guess we will see.

In the fifteen months I've owned the car (purchased new from a Jeep dealer) it has been to the orig. Dealer as well as a different dealer multiple times for electronic related issues. Early on the car experienced trouble with the right front elect. Passenger window operating improperly. Then a series of incidents happened where the dash panel lights would come on and the car would stall. At times there was a noise from under the car. After stopping and restarting the car would run property for a period of time. Then the incidents would happen again. The most troubling incident occurred when I was stopping at red light - depresed the brake pedal at low speed.... and the car kept rolling until it impacted the car in front. Minor damage to both vehicles but scary as heck. Informed the orig. Dealer and they could find nothing. The incidents with the lights and the noise and other spooky elect problems - such as the middle HVAC unit putting out heat while the front and rear put out cold.- prompted me to find a different dealer to take the car to. They (nalley here in atlanta) did a good job and updated some softwear and changed the ignition switch. That alleviated the problems for two weeks then the new ignition switch failed. The promplty replaced that as well even though it was quite a mystery to them. Since then I have had two incidents where turning on the ignition switch failed to start the car - there was no response. Allowed the car to sit for a minute then it started.

Three times I experienced power loss while driving my 2006 Jeep Commander, 4X4. The first time -- I turned the ignition to start the Jeep and it didn't kick over right away, all the warning lights lit up simultaneously, then randomly and at varying lengths of time went out. The dash lights and the radio were turning on and off. Weird, I shut it off and waited about 2 minutes. I started it again and everything seemed ok (except the airbag light remained on). As I was pulling out of the parking lot onto the main road, the dashboard lit up again, flashing on and off as before, and then a clunk-jerk -- no power steering, no power brakes, lights still going crazy. Luckily I was able to coast into another parking lot, stop safely. I turned it off, waited 5 minutes, then it started and I made it home without incident (airbag light still lingered for a while). Two and a half weeks later, as I was leaving my house (so I was going slow) the dashboard started the same flashing routine as before. I shut the Jeep off immediately, waited about 2 minutes and re-started. No further problems but the airbag light lingered a few minutes as before. The third incident (October 29th), I was driving along the main road about 40 mhp on a straight smooth section when all the warning lights began flashing on/off (oh, no!). at the first opportunity I turned off the main road and kept driving slowly to my garage. I made it there without losing the steering/brakes, lights flashing the whole way. I am scared to drive it now. The dealer is unable to re-create the problem, their only solution was to call the manufacturer, who suggests that I remove the other three keys from my keyring because their weight must be causing the highly-sensitive ignition tumbler to toggle to accessory mode. Uuuuugggghhhhhh. I am not comfortable with this explanation. I am still afraid to drive this vehicle. What should I do?

This has happened on more then one occasion. The 1st couple of times the check engine light was one, it took 2 times there and they replaced the modular. After that that was taken care of but then while driving down the street all the instrument lights on the panel came on and all gauges went to zero. The second time this happened, I was driving to work going about 35 miles per hour, again all lights on instrument panel came on and the Jeep stalled causing my wheels to lock and my steering to not work, I had to skid off the side of the road, thank goodness no one was behind me. I started my Jeep a couple minutes later and the check engine light and all gauges were still at zero and frightened, I was able to drive home through the neighborhood. I took it to the dealership which was there a day because they knew I was furious at this time because I could have caused an accident causing injury to myself and other drivers, I then got it back and was driving home again thank goodness not on the freeway and it happened again. I took it back to the dealer who told me there is nothing that can be done because nothing is being detected on the chip so they can not fix it, they advised me to just drive it and keep a log of the pattern to help them determine the cause. I called the service manager and told him that I have a huge problem with them asking me to drive this for a pattern and causing a potentionally fatal accident to get a pattern which they already know had done this before, the service manger is having the service writer drive my Jeep and has been so for almost a week now. I can't believe that this issue is not being taken serious, I could have caused a very very serious accident on the freeway and more so when it starts to snow. I do not feel safe in this vehicle, not only for myself buy other's on the road. This is something that needs to be taken care of now before someone loses there life.

I own a 2006 Jeep Commander. It started stalling on me in Feb or 07. Since then it has stalled 20 times or more. It was at the dealers many of time with me in a rental car for periods of over 2 months at a time. They have yet to find out what the problem is with my Jeep. It was labeled a lemon by Chrysler but they wanted to charge me an outrageous amount for use on the car. I don't feel for safety reasons this car should even be on the road. I have told Chrysler if anything happens to me or my children in the car when it stalls they are 100% liable. This car is unsafe. It will stall just driving down the road. I have had my stall with no warning on are local hwy here I90. Very unsafe this auto is. I want my money back or a replacement with out all the penalties. This is just stupid I have been dealing with this since Feb 07 and I am tired of it. I bought the car to drive not have it in the shop be making the payments on it and when I do have it fear for my family's and my own safety in the car.

My wife's Jeep completely shut down while going 45 miles an hour and she went off of the road. This happened less than a month after we took it to the Jeep dealership to have fixed. They said as im sure every one who has put in an apparent useless complaint that " no errors are coming up and there doesn't seem to be a problem. " what bothers me the most about this is that Jeep has not issued any statement after the countless complaints keep filing in. Just because no error message is coming up when it is plugged in doesn't mean these hundreds of Jeep Commander owners are lying about what is happening. I have another appointment tomorrow. This exercise is getting old. It should not have to take a death from some one driving these vehicles to have Chrysler do something about this. I have read many of these complaints that other concerned drivers have put in. Apparently this site doesn't get chrslers attention.

While stopped at a stop light on 4 different occasions over a period of 2 weeks, the vehicle lost total electrical power and engine shut off by it self. The 2006 Jeep Commander restarted immediately after putting in park and turning ignition. The Jeep was brought into the Jeep service center on 9-11-2007. Service tech said that they had similar problem with another Jeep Commander in the service center and could not figure out the problem. Per the service tech no error messages were reported. They called Chrysler who told them to do a PCM reflash install per star. The car has stalled again since then.

Since the beginning of ownership, this car has stalled many times (as well as other various and odd electrical problems.) many times I can turn the car off and on and it will restart. This does happen in parking lots and highway speeds as well. I have also lost power steering and brakes when in parking lots at a very slow acceleration speed. I have also had air bag warning lights go on and stay on then randomly shut off. The dealer has tried to help resolve but is limited by Chrysler's ability to recognize that there is a problem. If there is no code in the cars computer, there is no problem and can't be duplicated. If the problem can't be duplicated, there is no repair. But it keeps happening over and over. I have filed a complaint with Chrysler with no resolve. The dealership has had my car and drove it for 3 weeks to try to duplicate the problem. Since it is so random and they just didn't get enough time/miles in, the problem didn't happen. It stalled again about 3 weeks after that pulling out of my driveway. There has been no repair, because Chrysler says there is no problem. I have been in the middle of an intersection with a 15 year old on a permit driving with oncoming traffic. I have had this car since March 2006 and this has been occurring many times repeatedly since then. Not all have been documented and because it occasionally happens on weekends or holidays, I have no ability to get it in to a dealership. In order for them to be able to read a code, I would have to leave the car in a stalled position wherever it occurred and have it towed directly to the dealer. This is highly impractical and unsafe. Especially scary at high speeds on the highway. I do not want to be a casualty of Chrysler's failure to recognize that there are thousands of these vehicles out there doing this exact same thing. Do a "google" search see the #'s! something needs to be done!!!
