CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

I have never owned an american car until I bought this 2011 Jeep- I have had electrical problems with this car that I have never had with ANY car- my remotes went bad due to electrical issue, random lights come on and off all the time and now I have a BAD Tipm.....I found this out after being stranded backing out of a parking place in a busy shopping center- the car shut off and wouldn't start for 20 min- finally started-

later that day I was stranded again on a busy highway- after multiple attempts the starter blew, I had to have my car towed, new started installed and relay switch...over $2000, no car for 1 1/2 wks..............had the car for 2 days and it stalled again- Back to the dealership- I now have a bad tipm, $1300 fix.........I am beyond furious, I have done my homework and see this is a MAJOR problem with 2011 JEEP, why isn't this a recall- the mechanic at the dealership even agreed- COME on GM help us consumers who support AMERICAN cars- I was on the phone yesterday with GM.........I wont stop until they do the right thing!

Update from Oct 22, 2014: I have 2 recals on my car that have been out since June 2014- It is Oct 22, 2014 and I can't get either recall fixed- the parts are on back order- and am still having TIPM problems. Calling the dealership is a joke, I get the complete run-around

My first American made car- this is terrible- Chrysler needs to take responsibility and correct these problems

UPDATE to message posted a couple of days ago regarding my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 with a suspected TIPM problem:

Didn't drive my Jeep over the weekend because I did not want to get stranded if it wouldn't start. Monday 9-15-14 called the GALEANA Chrysler/Jeep dealership where I purchased the vehicle new in 2011 and explained the problem I was having. They said bring it right in and we will have a look. My JGC started on the third attempt and I drove it up to the dealership service adviser's booth. I shut the Jeep off hoping the hard start problem would re-occur which it did. I was given a ride back to my home in the courtesy van. Thank you very much! A short while later I received a call from the service department stating that the problem was in fact a defective TIPM, that my vehicle was out of warranty and that replacement of the TIPM would cost me $1300. I was not a happy camper. Understand we really like the Jeep but this $1300 repair charge was hard to swallow. I called Chrysler Customer Service Assistance 1-877-426-5337 and began speaking with Dennis who was very helpful and really seemed to care about the problem I was having and said he would call the dealership and try to arrange a one time factory payment assist. I was contacted by Jim my service adviser who said a new TIPM would be installed and the final cost to me would be $250. I'm not thrilled about having to fork out $250 for a defective part but I thank Dennis at Jeep Customer Care and the GALEANA dealership in Ft Myers Florida for resolving this problem in responsible manner. It is this kind of service that will bring me back into their showroom when I buy my next vehicle. FYI mileage at time of repair 25086. POSTED 9-16-14 D.Berndt Ft Myers, FL

WTF. My car would start every 4-5 tries. Then it would work fine. Then it would take 6-7 tries. And work fine. Then it would take 2 tries. Then work fine. And on and on.

So I took it to a place in town called Jeep Masters. Been in business for 30+ years. They couldn't replicate the problem and said nothing was wrong.

I drove it home and of course, it took 5 tries to start it. Then it would work fine, etc. etc. It was a pain in the ass that I told myself I could deal with so long as it started...

Until it left me stranded in another city. JUST as I was about to get it towed. It worked.

The next morning? You guessed it. Didn't start.

Bought the car brand new. It has ~45k miles on it.

Sept 10, 2014 had some errands to run. Drove our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee which we purchased new.

This car has only 25,000 miles. is garage kept and really babied. This vehicle has the Pentastar V6 engine.

I parked in the Wal Mart lot, did some shopping and returned to the car about 30 min. later. I pushed the start button and the engine started, ran rough for a few seconds then quit. I waited for a couple of minutes and pushed the start button again. The engine turned over and continued cranking until I pressed the stop button 15 seconds later. I waited a few more minutes and tried again the engine started. Next stop was Lowes. I hoped the problem had corrected itself like my laptop sometimes does after a shutdown and restart sequence. Nope. I experienced another episode. Luckily the car finally started. Needed the car again on Friday Sept 12. Went into my garage, and on the third attempt the Jeep started. Drove a short distance to meet with a client which lasted about 1/2 hour. Went to start the car and on the first attempt it started but ran rough for a few seconds then smoothed out. It is Saturday and I have not tried to start the car. I checked online for others having similar problems and am quite horrified by what I found. This sounds like an expensive TIPM issue. Now I have an unreliable vehicle. Very worrisome and troubling.

I have read that failure of this part can cause vehicle stalling and many other electrical problems.

Let's hope there is a recall to correct this problem before innocent people are injured or killed.

If Chrysler does not address this issue in a responsible manner, my next new vehicle purchase won't be from their camp. POSTED 9-13-14 FT MYERS, FLORIDA

Vehicle would not start. Starter would run but engine would not start. Mostly happened when vehicle was hot but one morning it would not start. Took it to dealership and they knew exactly what it was. That tells me this is a MAJOR problem. After reading the letters in this forum I am considering getting rid of this car. I travel a lot and have taken great care of this vehicle. It should not be given this problem. No warranty so $1200 spent.to fix.

Beginning in August my car was having trouble starting. Over the next week or so the problem kept getting worse and the check engine light came on so I decided to take it to the dealership to have them look at it. After they diagnosed the problem I was told the issue was that the left cylinder was bad. This was a known manufacturer issue and the part was covered under the powertrain warranty plus, since it was a known issue Chrysler/Jeep had extended the warranty on that specific part for 10 years. It took 12 days for my car to be fixed. Two days after getting my car back I began having the same issue. The car wouldn’t turn over and often when the car did turnover it would suddenly shut off. This issue got worse and worse but the check engine light never came on this time.

This past weekend, as I was driving with my five year old son on a major road, my car suddenly shut off. Luckily, the car had enough momentum where I could switch lanes and pull into a retail plaza. I tried over and over to get the car to start with no luck. A few times the car would start and then shut down. I immediately had the car taken to the dealership. After a couple of days of evaluation the service department called and asked if I could describe the issue with the car as they were unable to tell what was going on. The car's system gave them nothing when they ran the diagnostics. A day later I received a call telling me that the Total Integrated Power Module (TIPM) has gone bad and it would be roughly $1,300 to replace it.

I immediately Goggled TIPM as I had never heard of this before today. Apparently, there is a class action lawsuit in CA for this issue. There are also thousands of complaints with the N.H.T.S.A. How can a company ignore a known issue when said issue could potentially cause serious injury, or worse, to the driver and passengers of their vehicle? Also, did the issue pop up after my cylinder was fixed? If not, why wasn’t it diagnosed and fixed at that point? If the issue existed at the same time of the cylinder valve repair and it wasn’t diagnosed and fixed, then they essentially gave me a car that was supposed to be “fixed” that could come to a dead stop in the middle of the highway. To be hit with a $1300 tab after just getting my car back is unbelievably frustrating!

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees have the most TIPM complaints on file for engines not starting. There is a class action lawsuit for this. Also, this occurred about 1 week after the Jeep's extended warranty was up. There should be some sort of compensation for this.

First of all, I love my Grand Cherokee so much so that we just bought a new Jeep Wrangler Sport as a companion. Our first experience on non-starting occurred in February of this year. After retrying to start the car a couple of times, the engine would start. This has only happened 4-5 times over the past several months. Oftentimes, my key fob is not recognized until I give it a smack but I don't know if this is related to the TIPM issue. We have also had the radio and AC do strange things a few times. I just learned about all of the TIPM controversy yesterday when I was searching for hard start issues on the web. I have an appointment on Monday with the dealer who says they have a replacement TIPM in stock. I also have extended warranty coverage. If I don't leave the dealer with a new TIPM for no more than my $100 deductible on Monday, I will not be a happy camper. To be continued.

I have the same TIPM problem as every other Jeep GC owner. I think it's ridiculous that we have paid this much to own a "premium" car, and even after hundreds of customers have complained about having the same issue, Chrysler chooses to make those customers pay upwards of $1300 to fix the problem. When are auto manufacturers going to realize that simply doing the right thing earns loyalty? Make a situation like this right and I'm okay with having to deal with the aggravation of it. Shrug me off and make me pay $1300 to fix YOUR defective part, I fix the problem, trade in the vehicle for a better brand and NEVER return to a Jeep dealership again. Goodbye Jeep!

My 2011 JGC was stuck in my driveway luckily . I tried at least 8 times and the Jeep finally started but it just stalled out.. I tried again, same problem. I noticed the ETC warning light was on as I was trying to start which means a problem with the electronic throttle control. I have a feeling its a faulty TIPM. I have two little ones and God forbid I get stranded somewhere with them in the vehicle or something worse happens.

Had trouble starting the car about 2 weeks ago. Called my "5 star" dealer ( 5 star my ass), the closest they could get me in was more than 2 weeks away. The problem got worse. At first it took 2 or 3 tries to get the car running, after about a week it was taking 7 or 8 tries and started stalling while driving. I called the dealer again to try to get in earlier due to stalling. I was told I was lucky to still have the appointment that I had on 9/9/14 because they were overbooked and calling to reschedule other appointments.

Finally on Friday morning the car would not start. I called the dealer and they told me to have it towed but couldn't look at it until 9/10/14. I had it towed to another dealer, waiting 2 hours I got a call that it was the TIPM and it was not covered by Jeep or the extended (Zuric) warranty. Told me it will cost $1098 plus tax. and was told to hang on to the receipt because there might be a recall on the part in the future. After Googling the problem I can see I'm not alone. I even contacted a lawyer about a pending class action against Chrysler http://cdn.carcomplaints.com/pdf/Chrysler%20TIPM%20Complaint%20%2811-01-13%29.pdf

Hopefully they will do the right thing. otherwise this will be my last Jeep.

OK, this is the third TIPM event in the past 1000 miles. The Dealer knows what's going on. They acted like they've never seen this issue before. DOH. What they do is run it into their shop, plug in a code reader. No codes and say there is nothing they can do since there are no codes. I tell them with the electrical system shutdown, why do you Guys think there will be any be codes?

The thing that irks us the most is they will not provide us with a work order. So it's like we were never there - hello. Our 3/36K warranty runs out on 10/16/2014 or sooner if we hit the 36K mileage mark. My Wife took it in last time and they said "no codes, we'll likely never see any codes, so how are we going to fix it. Have a nice day". The vehicle pretty much sits in our garage. This weekend we are going to the Beach and need to haul some things. Well, we are taking my 12 year old SAAB 9-5 as we don't trust the Jeep.

This last TIPM event was a no-start issue. The outside temperature was 56 degrees, engine cold. Morning. Pushed button to start. Engine cranked over, it finally gave up spinning the starter. We waited a few minutes, tried again - nope. We just went inside and kept coming out every so often and trying it again. It finally started. I knew it would start as I heard the fuel pump the last attempt. And when it started, the neighbors came running out. It sounded like an engine without oil! Apparently the lifters had gone flat as it knocked very loud. Oil pressure was fine but it was really knocking and for what seemed forever. Realistically - 2 to 3 minutes.

Jeep I'm finding has no customer service. If they do, it's not been evident to us.

It began a couple of weeks prior to 8/14/14 where the car would take several tries to start. I would press the start button and the car would not turn over and start. Finally on 8/14/14 it was at it's worst taking many more tries and barely started when I left work and again picking up my child from school. I made it home but it wouldn't start again after that. We had the car towed to the dealership on 8/19/14. We were informed on 8/20/14 that it was an electrical issue that needed to be replaced costing $1300. The items repaired as listed on the invoice were TIPM KIT TIP 080350 and CORE RETURN. After the repair we noticed lights inside that car that have never worked as long as we've had the car (bought brand new), such as lights in the doors handles and door panel.

THE TIPM PROBLEM IS A PAIN IN THE YOU KNOW WHAT. WE INITIALLY TOOK THE JEEP IN AROUND APRIL 2014 AND WANTED JEEP TO LOOK INTO THE CAR NOT STARTING ON OCCASION. I WOULD HAVE TO SAY IT WOULD CRANK AND WOULDN'T START ABOUT EVERY 10 TO 15 TRIES. JEEP DOES THEIR DIAGNOSTICS AND TELLS ME IT IS INDEED THE TIPM THAT IS GOING OUT, AND INFORMS ME IT IS A BIG PROBLEM AND THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER LET ALONE IT WILL COST US $1200 TO FIX, SINCE MY WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 34,000 MILES AND WE NOW HAD 48,000 MILES. SO FAST FORWARD 3 MONTHS AND THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE NOW THE JEEP WON'T START 1 OUT OF 5 TIMES, WHICH WAS A NIGHTMARE BECUZ WE WERE AFRAID TO GO ANYWHERE THINKING THE CAR MIGHT NOT START. SO BACK IN THE SHOP IT WENT, WE WERE WITHOUT A SECOND CAR FOR 3 WEEKS AND NO COMPENSATION FROM JEEP WHATSOEVER. WE GET A CALL FROM JEEP SAYING THAT CHRYSLER CAME OUT WITH A FIX, IN WHICH THEY HARD WIRE AND BYPASS THE TIPM. THIS COST HALF THE PRICE BUT NOW INSTEAD OF HAVING KEYLESS FEATURES AND REMOTE START (WHICH WAS PART OF WHY WE BOUGHT THE CAR) WE NOW HAVE TO START IT WITH THE ACTUAL KEY. SO NOW THE DEPRECIATION OF THE VEHICLE GOES DOWN EVEN MORE. THIS WILL BE THE LAST JEEP WE BUY... BAD BUSINESS.
