Wrangler Unlimited X 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 26,760 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I bought a used 2008 Jeep Unlimited X with 26.700 miles on December 1st , 2012. Shortly one month later.. I was on I-20 in Dallas, TX going about 65 MPH and as I drove on an overpass (Black road)... my jeep began to shake VIOLENTLY out of no where. I did not hit a pot hole, or anything, it just started SHAKING like Crazy, and I could not control the steering wheel. At first, I though maybe my tire had gotten flat or something. My kids were in the Jeep with me and started to scream and crying because they were so scared that we were going to be in a car accident. I quickly pulled over to the emergency lane and made a complete stop. I checked my tires and they were all fine. I pulled in to a Good Year Tire place and had them check my tire pressure. They said my tires were fine.

Then it kind of started to try and find out why my Jeep shook that way. So I began to press the O/D off button and the Road Traction button on each time I would get on my Jeep....thinking that would help. Well I thought pressing those buttons had fixed my shaking problem, but 1 month later, it happened to me again on my way to work. Just as I hit 55 - 65 MPH is when my Jeep shook again so bad, I thought the car behind me was going to run into me because I was being tail gated that day. I took it to the mechanic, and he said it might be my stabilizing bar, or my steering shaft, or the arm support. IF I go along with all these guesses and change each thing mentioned, I'm looking at about $1500 parts and labor.

As I read all the other complaints, I was like.....That is exactly what happened to me and calling it the "Death Wobble" is the best descriptive name for what we experience. It is really the scariest thing ever....especially when you have your family in the car with you. For such a big investment that one makes purchasing their Jeeps, and for as many complaints of this problem, this should be considered a recall problem and Chrysler should be responsible to fix it. I have always wanted to own a Jeep and I finally did get that chance, and I cant think of another car I would rather have. I just would like someone to take responsibility for this malfunction, and recognize that it is a factory problem and Fix it at no cost to the consumer. If anyone has started a Group Law suite... please share that info with all of us because there is power in multitudes. I'm sure we would have a good group of people come forward and would like to take part in this.

I was driving on I-80 in Evanston Wyoming and going through a slight curve and drove over a small pot hole and I experienced the "Death Wobble". I had to pull over on the emergency lane, I was almost hit by a semi that was directly behind me. I took it into Fremont Motors and explained to them and they had it for the day and could not find anything wrong with it. The "Death Wobble" has occurred 6 - 8 times now and I took it back to Fremont Motors again and now they want to put some dampeners and a new stabilizer bar on for a tune of $600. After reading articles on the internet I am not sure what to do? Anybody know how to fix this problem?

Driving to Louisiana for a weekend getaway, hit a rough patch of concrete and thought we blew out all four tires. pulled over and could not see any problems. Got back on the freeway and traveled a few more miles then hit a pothole and same thing. Called the dealership and talked to service dept. He said was steering dampener and vehicle is safe to drive. Shaking started to happen more often so called auto part stores nearby. Found one with a Rancho suspension dampener and replaced the original dampener. Seemed to have fixed the problem. Was really surprised when same problem started to occur on our way home the next day. Checked all nuts and bolts, all tight. Noticed stabilizer bar seems a little loose, I will replace bushings to see if helps. Glad we were not on the 85 MPH section of freeway.

I complained to the dealer and they could not duplicate the "death wobble".

I had a friend follow in front of me to see if he could see what is loose.

He noticed the lower drag link bar vibrating. I went ahead and installed a dual steering stabilizer set up from skyjacker. Now the problem is solved for me.

This was a 2 year process trying to get this death wobble fixed. Of course, it happened right after the 36,000 mile bumper-bumper expired. After 3 trips to the garage, 4 repairs, and over $1,500, I think we might actually have it fixed, for the moment. Never again will I buy a Chrysler product.

How is it that this is not considered a recall? It became evident when this happened that the previous owner got rid of the problem buy selling this vehicle to a car dealership. Of course, this doesn't happen every single time my daughter is driving the car. Most only when she is on the interstate over 55mph, so as a result, she doesnt drive on the highway!

When we discovered the problem is all over the country and found on the internet that so many other Jeep owners have this same problem, where is Jeep standing up to this issue! So upsetting that my daughter wanted the Jeep so badly, she sold the Lexus that was given to her to get the Jeep!

This is shockingly dangerous. I have a unmodified Jeep Wrangler and one day I hit a tiny bump in the road and my steering wheel starts shaking uncontrollably. People around me stopped and asked if I was alright. They told me my wheels were flailing back and forth and though I was going to flip.

I attempted to drive home slowly with flasher only now the problem was evident at any speeds.

This is beyond dangerous and thank god for 4 wheel parts b/c the dealer tried to tell me they had no clue and suggested the wheels were unbalanced. They refused to acknowledge a real problem despite the fact my jeep became impossible to drive and the cost was ridiculous and unfair.

The worst part is the sheer fact the dealership had "no idea" of a problem that is easily evident as legitimate with one google search for "death wobble".

This is my second online complaint regarding the "Death Wobble" I have experienced in my Jeep. I had the issue "fixed" in September, though it began to happen again in early December. I took my Jeep back in to the dealership and they replaced the steering damper with a "high performance" model. They did this at no charge because they said the original "fix" was still under warranty. I thought this took care of things. Two days ago, I was driving about 45 MPH on a busy service road and the vehicle began to shake violently again. I immediately had to slow down and almost come to a stop before it would stop. Nearby drivers had to swerve to miss me and the guy behind me almost rear-ended me. This has got to stop. I took my Jeep back to the dealership this morning and they said they would look into it and call me back. The saga continues.

I experienced the "Death Wobble" several months ago and it scared me to death. It happened several times after that and I took it into my local mechanic. They could get it to do it for them, too, but said their "fix" wasn't guaranteed. I then tried to drive at the "correct" speed and miss any bumps, but it finally got to the point that I couldn't predict it. My wife and children refused to ride with me.

I couldn't afford to buy a new vehicle, and I couldn't drive it safely any more, so I took it in to the Jeep dealer and, for $1,700 they "fixed" it by replacing the upper and lower ball joints, replacing the steering damper (it was leaking?), and replacing the front shocks. This "fix" seemed to do the trick for about 2 1/2 months, but now it is back! I've experience the "Death Wobble" several more times in the last week and I don't know what to do.

This seems to be a very dangerous condition. Shouldn't Jeep be responsible for determining an appropriate fix?

Mine started doing the horrible shaking a few months ago not all the time but only every once in awhile. Now it is getting worse. I bought it brand new 3 years ago. It had around 40,000 miles on it when this started. I took it to my mechanic. He put on a new steering damper on it. After I paid him I took it out for a drive where the death wobble always happens. The steering damper did not fix the death wobble. I am taking it to see if it is out of alignment and make sure my tires are all good. I am also going to talk to my mechanic about the sway bar possibly being loose since I see someone mentioning it on here. I have to agree it is very scary when the death wobble occurs. I pray I get this fixed if not I guess I will be getting me a new car. I love my Jeep and I hope I get this resolved finally.

Bought a new 2008 Jeep Wrangler 4 door. At around 20,000 miles the first death wobble happened. Driving at about 45mph on a smooth road, went over an expansion joint on a bridge. The front end started to shake uncontrollably, stepping on the brakes made it worse! Had to coast to a stop on the road shoulder. I thought it was a fluke occurrence.

Took the car to the dealer. They checked the front end and said that there was nothing wrong. It has happened again, 3 times in a row when my wife was driving this past week. She was on a 3 lane interstate in the center lane. It was VERY SCARY, The cars around her saw the car shaking and the wheels bouncing, they backed away and let her coast to a stop on the shoulder. It happened 2 other times on the way home. She is scared to death and will not get in the car again. Chrysler needs to recall these cars before people are killed. I have an appointment at the dealer next week.

Oh...My...God! Why is it that when you try to explain this kind of thing to people whose job it is to fix cars that they look at you like you just stepped off an inter-galactic transport? But in 15 minutes on the internet, I can find records of the identical problem other people have had?

This is the scariest thing that's ever happened to me while driving. Going between 55 and 60mph - not breaking, not shifting, not turning - on flat, smooth road. And then - aaaaggghhhh! like the front half of the vehicle is being shaken by a huge invisible hand, front wheels feel like they're separating from the vehicle and going to fly off in different directions! Vehicle is literally bucking on the road for several seconds. Took it to a tire place and they said the "tires might be out of balance," which I strongly disagreed with and asked them to look around for another problem. What I got was balanced tires ... and more Death Wobble!! Next step, the dealership, with copies of these complaints!

My 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X has the dreaded DEATH WOBBLE......I have had numerous steering stabilizers put on by the dealer to fix this problem but it is only a band aid. I was almost in a major accident while driving down the highway at 70 MPH. My wife and children were in the Jeep when it started shaking violently after hitting a small patch in the road. It scared them to death. I was able to gain control after slowing down to 30 MPH. There is enough people with this problem to warrant a recall or a class action lawsuit. I am only raving because I do not know what to do. I have called Chrysler and they will not do anything.

After purchasing my jeep I experienced DEATH WOBBLE. I only had 1500 miles on it. I took it to the dealer and they said they have heard of this problem with other jeeps. Their fix was to put a larger steering stabilizer on it. This fix only lasted 5000 miles. After I took it in for a second time they could not figure it out and blamed it on the road I was driving on. I told them it was the highway! They put another steering stabilizer on and it seemed to go away but it came back after 5000 more miles. This issue must be addressed by someone. Please help.

I was driving down the road at 40-45mph and the jeep started making a horrible noise like all four tires were flat and before I could turn off the 4 lane onto a side street it started shaking and wobbling to the point I could hardly control the steering wheel. The traffic around me slowed down and the oncoming traffic did the same. As soon as I turned onto the side street and came to a halt I got out and walked around to look for flat tires but found none.

I immediately returned back home and got on the internet and found the death wobble on you tube. It was the exact thing that had happened to me. I took my Jeep into dealer yesterday and they said the problem could be corrected with a new dampner, bracket and bolt. They have ordered the parts and I am awaiting their call for repair to be done. In the meantime I am frightened to drive this car but have to deal with the necessities of life.

Wrangler Unlimited V6

  • Manual transmission
  • 10,400 miles

After the "Death Wobble" problem first occurred when I had my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited out for a drive on April 9, 2011, I immediately took the Jeep in to my Jeep dealer. The dealer replaced a number of parts in the front suspension and realigned the vehicle. The dealer reported that the problem had been fixed. However, the very next time that my son had the Jeep out for a drive the problem reoccurred. The Jeep is only 2-1/3 years old, has not been modified in any respect, and only has 10,400 miles on it. It is dangerous to drive. When the "Death Wobble" occurs, the Jeep shakes violently from side to side, making it very difficult to control the vehicle. I have researched the problem on the internet. I have discovered numerous reports of the "Death Wobble" problem, with most owners reporting that it is very difficult to control their Jeep when the problem occurs. Jeep needs to come up with a fix for the problem and to recall all Jeeps having this problem. This is Serious!

Update from Jun 23, 2011: Since I wrote my original complaint, I have had my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in to the same Jeep dealership (which is the only one in town) two more times. The dealership advised me that at this point (i.e. after three or four visits to the dealership for the problem) it has replaced most of the front suspension. Nevertheless the "death wobble" remains. It is as bad now as it was when I first brought the Jeep into the dealership to fix the problem. The Jeep was purchased new on 12/31/2008 and has less than 11,000 miles on it. I have spoken with Customer Service at Jeep about the problem, but have received any help from Jeep. I would appreciate any advice that anyone can provide on how to fix the problem. M. H. My jeep ran fine until 17,200 miles . while driving at about 62 mph I hit a very short section of patched blacktop and that was when all hell broke loose. the front end, steering wheel & transmission shifter ( 6 speed ) shook violently. I could not steer it @ it went to the right. This has happened 6 times now in less than 600 miles ( would be higher if I did not slow to less than 50 mph) Took it to a jeep dealer & told them what was happening ( they never heard of death wobble or shaking in the front) . Asked for the mechanic that was to work on it to talk to me; they did not tell him! I went back (in the shop) to see if they had started on it @ he had already taken a test drive & could not duplicate my problem ( on 35 & 50 mph roads) . They tried to say it was low tire pressure (32psi instead of 35psi ) they were wrong, I carry a good pressure gauge in all my vehicles & I check pressures before I drive them ( had a bad experience 45 years ago with under inflated rear tires) . they changed out the steering gear box under warranty & I paid for tire balancing & alignment & bought A heavy duty steering stablizer. Nothing helped. I asked what was next & the service manager said unless I found something loose there was nothing they could do but suggested I buy 4 new tires & get a road force balance ( around 1000 dollars ) . A friend suggested I go to a jeep dealer in the next town that he retired from & tell the service manager that he had sent me ( they were friends for years) That guy was outstanding!! He knew what death wobble was & had experienced it personally ( will not ride in one again). They replaced every thing that the factory would & then the dealership replaced things ( it was avery good customer) . The jeep zone rep. was of no help. They are big Jeep dealer & have had several death wobble cases. He said the problem starts around 18,000 miles & suggested to not get on interstate highways & stay below 55 mph on regular roads & wished me well on my fight that is coming with Chrysler . JEEP corporation. If you are having this problem I strongly suggest you register a complaint with the DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, NHTSA OFFICE of Defects investigation PHONE # 888-327 4236 or go to www.safercar.gov. ; also follow your complaint procedure in your owners manual. If all else fails get you a good trial lawyer or hope a class action suit is filed. My JEEP has never been wrecked , off road or lifted. I have around 3000 dollars of dress up accessory's on it do not want to get rid of it! I JUST WANT IT FIXED!! I am a retired auto truck, heavy equipment & industrial mechanic supervisor. Is this a design flaw or bad alignment specs? This Jeep is not safe to drive above 50 mph!

I bought my Jeep from a Toyota dealership. It had an after-market lift kit installed. A few weeks after purchase I noticed severe oscillation in the front end when hitting a bump at 35-40 mph. I took it to Berthod Motors for repairs. They tightened the stabilizer bar (I think (track-bar maybe?)) and sent me on my way. As a cutesy Toyota paid for the repairs. My warranty doesn't cover suspension problems.

4 days ago (7-8 months after initial "repair") it happened again but this time I was driving 75mph down the interstate and almost rolled my Jeep. I took it into Berthod again and they said the track bar had ripped away from the frame. They aren't taking any responsibility and I'm being charged $600 for repairs.

I don't feel safe driving it off the lot.
