CarComplaints.com Notes: In a very limited selection on small pickup trucks, the Frontier is one of the best options except -- and I cannot emphasize this enough -- for one problem that makes it an avoid-at-all-costs pain in you know what: the radiator ruptures and leaks coolant into the transmission, killing it. Such a buzzkill.

This problem affects most 2005-2008 (and maybe beyond) Frontiers.

I have been a loyal Nissan owner for more then 30 years but this Frontier will be my last Nissan!!! The fact that Nissan knew of the problem and that it was due to BAD ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL and did nothing about it shows how little Nissan cares about its customers the fix would have been so simple and cheap NISSAN you are giving American car makers a good name, well Nissan its. Been fun (NOT) but it's time for me to say good bye for good.

Transmission causes my 2005 Frontier to violently buck and jump at unpredictable times while driving. It seems to occur only when the transmission has well warmed-up. Happens at 40 to 65 MPH. Applying the overdrive will cause the bucking/jumping to stop temporarily.

Problem: Cracked radiator is letting coolant (antifreeze) leak into the transmission of my 2005 Nissan Frontier Crew cab truck. Repair estimate from Eastern Carolina Nissan dealership (3315 Hwy 70 East, New Bern, NC 28560, 252-636-1000) was $5,300 for a new transmission which includes replacing the radiator also. I am in the process of getting estimates for fixing the problem and the truck's transmission. I have been driving the Datsun/Nissan vehicles since 1975 and have not experienced any real problems until now. I love my Frontier, but will be unable to trade or sale it without FIXING the radiator and the bad engineering problem.

Frontier 4.0L V6

2005 Nissan Frontier has been nothing but trouble. I can't sell it because I have a conscience-unlike Nissan. I've replaced u joints, cad converter, o2 sensor, cam shaft sensor, computer ($900). I thought it was over then the transmission starts slipping. Of course the Nissan dealership new exactly what was wrong and had me have it towed to them. Cost me $100 for them to tell me that I had antifreeze in my transmission. A few days earlier, I told them that for free. I tried just replacing the radiator, but no such luck. That cost me a little over $700 and didn't last long. Now it's in the shop again having the transmission rebuilt--the bill is $4,194. That's just the first 100,000 miles...woo hoo.

I was riding in my truck one night and i started to experience something wrong with my transmission. The truck stopped running as it started to lose power. The next day it would not start at all. I took my Nissan truck to Nissan dealer and they informed me that the radiator coolant ran into my transmission causing the transmission to be destroyed. I was told that it will cost 5200 dollars to repair truck. Wow I thought after finding out that other people was having same problem. Thousand others. I notified Nissan and I was given a code number and then they called back and stated that they sent out information for a 9 year extended warranty, which I never received. Then I was told by Nissan factory that they could not help me at this time. This is how you treat your customers? Never again.

Frontier V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 180,000 miles

Check engine light came on, got scanned at auto zone, all codes referenced transmission & sensors (i.e. cam shaft)...Took to Geurlich's Auto for an inspection and transmission was suggested to be replaced...Took it to AAMCO for an inspection/2nd opinion and same diagnosis, replace/re-build transmission.

Finally accumulated the funds to have a mechanic rebuild our transmission and upon return of our vehicle, and unbeknownst to us, he mentioned the know issues/investigation stemming back to 2012 with the radiator leaking into the transmission and causing it to fail, which is ultimately what he felt happened.

Since we purchased the vehicle on 08/08/2012 with an odometer reading of 100,340. we would have been entitled to none of the repair options or concessions Nissan offered under the proposed class action, since all were offered only up to 100K miles. The date the investigation was opened according to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ was 6/11/2012, 2 months prior to our purchase. The dealer at the time should have been well aware of the open investigation and provided us information on it so that we may have made a more informed decision.

I feel that this purchase, although 3 years post purchase, warrants reimbursements to us of the cost to re-build the transmission, replace radiator, etc.

Frontier 4x4 Crew Cab 4.0 V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 112,000 miles

I truly loved truck but it's a PAIN IN THE ASS. I am a guy who takes care of his vehicles but my Frontier was my everything until a year ago. The transmission and radiator cooling started leaking causing major repairs. I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs since the extended warranty expired on my truck out of luck. Went to a AutoZone figuring if could fix my Frontier looking think that my engine is completely gone I thought wouldn't happened to me until my truck hit 112,000 miles after seeing all frustrated owners.

This truck was purchased new 1/2006 still got all receipts even took in to Glenn Nissan they say that my engine need lots major work in getting this problem they said this is first time someone came in with this problem. Here it's October 2015 my truck seems getting worse by second. Now seems the radiator is a milkshake, even idles rough with this situation. This is very sad, we give manufacturers money but they eat it up because DON'T STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS.

I had a 1987 Nissan D21 Pickup rusted at 220,000 miles without a single problem well can't complain my Frontier was great after 112,000 miles still will Nissan should get this situation or this will be a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. Transmission jerking into 3rd gear now replaced clutch and put money in other necessary problems. This is a common problem on Frontiers, Xterra's and Pathfinders from 2005-2010.

Don't want to get another Nissan after dealing with this situation. Believe me, I love my truck not so happy in Nissan not trying helping customers.

Frontier Nismo 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,500 miles

Certain Nissan products built between 2005 and 2010 had a poorly designed/manufactured automatic transmission cooling system - the transmission cooling line can crack resulting in engine coolant entering the transmission leading to total failure of the transmission. A Class Action lawsuit was filed against Nissan and settled with a warranty extension that ended at 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurred first.

The transmission in my 2005 Frontier started showing signs of the problem approximately one month after turning 10 years old with only 74,500 miles on the odometer. I took the vehicle in on Sept. 2, 2015, and was told the auto transmission cooler had failed resulting in engine coolant in the transmission - the radiator and transmission have to replaced at a cost of $6,700. Nissan knowingly hid this problem from owners until a Class Action lawsuit was filed.

There needs to be further litigation against Nissan to impose a RECALL to repair all the affected vehicles at Nissan's expense and reimburse all those individuals who have paid for repairs because they were outside the limits of the negotiated warranty extension. This is the second time I have fallen outside one of Nissan's warranty extensions. If you sell a vehicle with a known design flaw, which is the case for the transmission cooler and the previous fuel gauge sending unit issue, you should voluntarily fix the problem.

I am 2.5 months off the warranty and 9k miles under, but because I am 2 months over, I get nothing towards my $4366 f*ck up that Nissan is well aware of, and knew would happen around 100k miles. Even if I wasn't 2 months late, I would only get $800. I take very good care of my vehicles which is why I have such low miles on a 10 year old truck, and why its in the good condition it is in. By doing so I f*cked myself because at 100k its dead, well I reached the dead zone to late. Such bullshit when Nissan knows they have sh*tty radiators ($265) that lead to transmission replacement. I would have replaced a 265 dollar part anytime in the last 10 years had I known this. I am now in the market for a new truck, my wife vehicle is near 245k miles so she is going to be in the market soon, I can guarantee the 60K+ we spend on 2 new vehicles will not go to Nissan. They could have recalled the 265 dollar radiator before it ruined my transmission which they won't anything. I guess back to Chevy we go. Terrible business by Nissan.

Frontier Nissmo 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 83,000 miles

Purchased vehicle new and should have been able to get more that 83,000 miles out of the transmission. I submitted a claim to Nissan Consumer Affairs and am waiting on a response if they will repair my vehicle. From what they told me, best case is I will have to pay $3,000 and they will cover the difference (~$1,000) to have repaired. The cost of repairs is more than half the value of the truck itself. I am severely irritated that Nissan may not fully cover under warranty and the issue is a direct result of Nissan's design issue of running the transmission coolant through the radiator.

Frontier LS V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 129,000 miles

When the transmission started slipping. I thought my 2005 Nissan Frontier simply needed a routine service. Then I learned just how common the problem of Radiator Fluid leaking into the transmission and basically ruining it was with 2005 Frontiers. I was even more shocked when I learned how Nissan has ignored the problem.

I am very serious about the maintenance of my vehicles. I service them myself. The oil is always changed every 3000 miles, tires always rotated, filters changed, etc. Whenever recalls have been sent, I always take the vehicles to the Nissan Dealer for repair. I have never received any information from Nissan regarding this particular very common problem with 2005 Frontiers. If I had know, believe me I would have taken the appropriate maintenance steps to prevent this expensive repair. When I spoke to the regional Nissan Rep, he was very rude saying Nissan had no record of service on the 2005 Frontier and they would not consider helping with my problem.

I currently own 5 Nissan vehicles. I had just ordered a new 2015 Rogue which I cancelled. Hopefully, by the end of the year , I will no longer own any Nissans.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,938 miles

After paying today (July 13/2015) approx. $1422 to have the radiator replaced and systems flushed, we are now aware that this is only a temporary fix and that the transmission is bound to fail sooner rather than later. Here we are in Kamloops BC ,4000 kms from home and the dam dealership that sold us this "American " truck without our knowing it. We now learn that even if the co-op program would be valid (at the 10 year closing date as model year and just months over the 10yr period based on date of mfg) as a Canadian owner we'd have to go to a US dealer to have this resolved. This is not possible for us.

One thing is certain, IT IS MY LAST NISSAN !!!

Nissan North America did not send me information regarding the extended warranty. I took the truck to a shop where the fixed half of the transmission for $1800.00 and $120.00 for a computer scan. When I found out of the extended warranty I called Nissan NA, they told me to submit the invoices to them and to take it to a Nissan Dealership. Minutes after I paid $3000.00 for the extended warranty Nissan NA send me this email:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Nissan North America and allowing us the opportunity to be of assistance.

radiator causes transmission failure

When I bought this truck 3 years ago from King Nissan (now Wilson Nissan) in Bellingham, WA I asked if there were any known issues with the truck. I was told that the 2005 Nissan Frontier NISMO was great truck with no issues. Now, in looking at the Nissan customer complaint website the 2005 Frontier is by far the worst of any model year with at least 2-10 times as many as complaints as any other model year!!!!

I was lied to big time! Part of it is probably my fault for trusting a used car dealer.

My 2005 Nissan Frontier has been well maintained and driven conservatively. It is 10 years old and looks like new with no body repairs or rust. It has only 75,000 km (46,000 miles) on the odometer. This defect of the transmission line in the radiator should have been recalled by the manufacturer and the manufacturer should shoulder the entire cost of repairs. The manufacturer has known about this DEFECT in their manufacturing and have done nothing about this. My boyfriend was considering purchasing a Nissan product, now you couldn't pay him to take one for free.

This just shows that another large corporation that only cares about the dollars coming in and doesn't care about the consumer that is purchasing their product and keeping them in business.
