CarComplaints.com Notes: Owners are reporting that their engines are running out of oil awfully quick. As in, 1 quart every 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains that’s with the “normal” operating range of the 2AZ-FE while owners maintain that’s complete BS.

The issue may be the result of defective piston rings.

Camry Sedan Lx 4.6L

eventually it stopped on it's on. I had another car so I would switch out when I had problems. by the time I started back driving this car 2 months later it stopped eventually but it would happen again, but would stop. by then I had spent so much money on this car, I'd had it, and they had a recall on this problem, but of course the service department told me they did not which I knew was a lie.

problem #1

Jul 182012

Camry LE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 230,000 miles

This problem happened unexpectedly just sitting at a redlight. Car had 230000 miles on it at that time. Sporadically the dash instruments went to zero. Speedometer not working. Tach at Zero. ABS light on. Brake light on. No odometer showing. Other instruments acting up. Noticed also that the AC quit blowing cold. Blowing but not cold. Compressor cutting on and off. Car drove and shifted fine. No running problems.

The problem was intermittent. Took to dealer and they kept for five days and could not find the problem but thought the instrument cluster was bad. Could not explain the AC part. Would not reimburse me for the rental car after could not fix mine. I went to another dealer after I did some research on the internet and found out that the circuit module attached to the ABS pump was throwing bad data into the CAN network. The service manager called the Toyota Tech line and they verified that what I told them was something they had seen and to fix my car as I had asked. Now here is the problem. A new ABS pump and module costs $2100.00 retail from the dealer. I was not going to pay that. So I located one off a salvage yard 2008 model with 50000 miles for $250.00.. Of course the dealer said we cant warrant the part. I said I just want you to warrant that it is installed correctly. They agreed and installed it, bled the brakes, and reflashed the computer. Now the car has 305000 miles on it with no further related problems. They asked me if I would talk to a couple of other customers that had similar problems. Their mileages ranged between 125000 and about 180000 when the problems started. That dealer has now fixed about 6 or 7 the same way. Same symptoms every time. Same cure every time. I appreciate that a dealer will work with customers that have higher mileage cars and not try to make ridiculous priced repairs.

Called the original dealer and told him the story and how useless his assistant was and how much business they had missed out on.

Only other problem with this car was a couple of clogged fuel injectors due to ten percent ethanol fuel. Have been fortunate enough to find a fuel dealer that sells nonethanol gas. It costs a bit more but highway gas mileage went from 28.5 to 32 MPG. That is driving at 70 MPH. Ethanol is garbage. No further problems since making this change.
