Camry XLE 3.5L V6

Within the last month have noticed that randomly, the Toyota emblem pops up on the video/audio display when playing the radio, although audio is never lost, and concurrently, the navigation system has stopped all functioning. Basically, the map will not load, no matter how long I leave it on to try. I rarely use any other functions for this unit and do not subscribe to any connected/online services available for this unit. I also don't use the phone Bluetooth as it doesn't work with my phone.

I took it to the local dealer and was told that the "head unit" needs to be replaced, for $1200. Didn't do it, due to previous knowledge of bogus advice and charges from that particular dealership for relatives and friend I've helped. They did suggest that I take it to the dealership I purchased it from and that they may be willing to give me a break, which I'm planning to do next week. Have researched online and it appears that there are some potential issues, possibly related to air conditioner issues and moisture condensation, or possibly just a defective chip issue. Will update as I find out more. Would like to hear of similar issues and solutions.

Update from Aug 9, 2014: And finally - Jeesh! I baby this car. First new car I've purchased in decades, bought it loaded, like the car but for this to pop up 2 months after warranty ends concerns me for the future creeping expenses for this vehicle. Am hoping that this isn't the start of continued electronic issues.

Camry XLE

  • Automatic transmission
  • 3,000 miles

Bought a brand new Honda Camry 2012 XLE in November 2012. Once I started to learn how to use the navigational system I encountered several glitches. At first, the navigational system would go black and turn itself off and then back on. When this did happen, the map would disappear or if I was in a phone call, the connection would be lost.I also had trouble connecting my I Phone 4s with Pandora. I took it back to the dealer and the service manager was able to recreate the problems. It took about 3 weeks to have it worked on. Toyota Inc had to ok the repair, and the manager explained to me, that they do not like to replace the unit because they cost about US3000. After that time, Toyota replaced the wire harness to the unit using one from a vehicle in their lot. Now the unit no longer goes black, but sometimes when I am receiving a call the bluetooth will not pick up the call. This does not happen everytime. I was forwarded by the dealer an entire page of things to try, such as erasing Entune on my phone, and reload it. Turning my phone off every night, closing all applications, making sure the receiving antenna in the unit is pointing on the right direction, and buying an extension on the unit's antenna, etc. To say the least, I am not happy with the suggestions. I never had any problems with the bluetooth on my previous car, a Honda Accord EXL 2011, even though I was using the same phone. Another glitch occurs, when I am in the map application. If I turn the car off and the car is on the map application, when I turn it back on, sometimes the map will re-appear and sometimes it will not. (blue screen, audio off). The car is going back to the dealer next week and the manager said they would replace the unit, but he is not sure if this will solve all the problems. The navigational audio system has been very glitchy since I have purchased this brand new vehicle. No problems with the rest of the car at 4700 miles. Will update later if Toyota was able to fix these problems.

Update from Jun 17, 2013: The unit has been replaced and no longer turns itself on and off. The connectivity problem with the blue tooth remains and the Toyota service manager said it is a software issue with the I phone. Apparently Toyota is aware of the problem. The car has now 7000 miles and I will keep you posted if they solve the problem.
