Camry LE

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

My 2015 developed a problem at 110,000 miles. Around 40 mph, the car shuddered. The dealer misdiagnosed the problem first as the wheel bearings, but eventually realized it was the torque converter. This car was under Platinum Extended Warranty on top of its Certified warranty. Eventually not only did Toyota corporate replace the torque converter, they also replaced the entire transmission, noting that the vibrations from a faulty torque converter ruin a transmission. Now, I don't know if I might expect the new torque converter to last longer than 110,000 miles or what.

Moreover, here's something else to take into account before investing in a Toyota warrantied car. The deal, you might think, is that the dealers do warrantied repairs on their own judgment. Actually not only do they need approval from Toyota corporate, moreover they need a certain 3rd-party inspector to visit and approve the dissembled car's parts before warrantied repairs can start. And guess what, the inspectors don't work on weekends, plus sometimes don't show up for several weekdays either.

Camry LE 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,000 miles

The symptom is the car shudders accelerating into the 40 miles per hour range. It also occurs at the same RPM in a lower gear. This problem goes back to 2012. Although this problem is widely reported on the internet the dealer, Team Toyota of Princeton, and corporate Toyota disclaim any responsibility. They want to charge $2,880 for the repair. They claim it is a $1,000 part and 11 hours of labor. Be aware of this problem.

Update from Jan 19, 2019: This was fixed by the dealer, without charge, after being okayed by Toyota corporate.
