When braking there would be a chime, and "problem" would appear on the screen. Isn't that helpful? And there is no oil light... Eventually I checked the oil - down 2 quarts. Yet there is never any oil under the car. I had to add 2 quarts per month for a long time. Finally got up the courage to have the garage check it out. Not sure what they did, but I will check my records and get back to you. Now I only have to add 2 quarts every 2 months. I buy it by the case at Costco and keep it in the trunk with a funnel. I will update this later.

Loved, loved, loved my Toy. She saw us through road trips when gas was sky high. Very disappointed in the oil consumption problem. Planned on getting a new car in the next year, but Toy no more.

This car has been a dream to own UNTIL it started drinking oil faster than my kids go through a gallon of milk. I am putting oil in this car about every 3 fill-ups and my mpg are going down quickly.

Cost is outrageous to add oil every other day so you don't kill the engine, at $40.00 a week almost, not worth the cost, car sucks, but don't have the funds to replace

I use to have a 1997 Toyota T100SR5. It had 367000 miles with no issues with normal maintenance. This led me to purchase from Toyota again because of the reliability and quality. I purchased a 2007 prius and maintained it religiously but was disappointed when at 180000 miles it started burning oil. I have to add a quart every 1500 miles. I took it to Toyota and they said this is normal. Normal?! I took it back in a few months later to Toyota and ask for engine evaluation due to loss of oil. Now they say I need a new engine. I am so disappointed with Toyota and I wish I never sold my T100. Don't think I will buy Toyota again.

I understand that a car with 200K miles on it might have engine issues come up through normal wear & tear. I also am a fan for the most part of Toyota. This vehicle and the other Toyota's I've owned have all done well by me - service them regularly and they last. This though, has a ring of 'machinations' to it. I found, on other sites evidence of complaints for Prius's. I tried twice to get into Toyota dealerships in my area - including the dealership where I purchased the vehicle. I explained that I'm out of warranty but I'd like to have them check and give me an estimate if the rings/engine had oil burning/consumption issues. Both dealerships 'just weren't able to get my car into the queue the day I (in both cases) two weeks before had made reservations and had checked I might need a loaner/rental as engine work would likely need to be done.

Both dealerships as I said, didn't have time to get to my vehicle and both were all out of loaners/rentals. When I asked about scheduling for another day they IMMEADIATELY went into the seemingly same mantra your site's complaints have ==> "well a car with your mileage will likely have oil/engine issues...try an engine treatment and then get a full oil change, drive 12K miles and have the level checked...THEN make an appointment with us..." As I said earlier I admitted I was out of warranty and just wanted a check-up on the issue and estimate...I'm not a victim here, but my experience leads me to think that there definitely is something to the newer models and their issues.....too bad - as I said I really like Toyota

The dates and mileage are approximate. We only discovered the problem after the big red explanation point on the display panel came up, and we discovered there was almost no oil in the car. it becomes very black. When my mechanic gave it an oil change, he was shocked at how black the oil was--he had never seen it that bad in any vehicle. We now have to check our oil bi-monthly, and have to get oil changes every 3,000 miles (or sooner). The new oil becomes very old-looking very soon after it goes in.

Disappointed that a very small displacement Toyota engine that spends a lot of driving on the electric motor now using oil. Does all the right things but now using oil is less than I expected out of Toyota.

I expect a vehicle to run for ten years. My last Honda Civic never missed a beat until it hit 375,000 miles. I expected at least 150K - 200K from a Toyota Prius. I purchased the car at a local dealership and then took it back faithfully every 3,000 miles for an oil change. So the dealership has a record of that. At around 100,000 miles I took it in and the report from the tech indicated there was barely any oil on the stick. Humpf?? What is going on I ask. They tell me that after 100,000 miles that this car uses about a quart of oil per 1000 miles. Ok, that is a little weird, but maybe that is the norm. So I drove it for the next year and took great care into keeping an eye on the oil and filled it in between changes. I just came back from a 2600 mile trip and it used 4.5 qts of oil. Holy cow, this just isn't right. What is going on? My beloved car is giving up the battle at age nine. I spoke to the dealership and they now tell me that this is unusual for a Prius and I should look at trading it in. Humpf, head scratch, head scratch. Do I honestly want another Toyota that is going to under perform, think not. I took a lot of grief over this purchase because it is not an American brand. Here in the heartland this is a notable thing when living amongst farmers with their Fords and Chevys. Most thought the battery would crap out after five years. All in all, this has been a great car, with the exception of crapping out due to high oil consumption of what should be the teenage years of the lifespan expectancy of this vehicle.

Started to have this problem of low oil, about 4,000 miles after an oil change. The Toyota dealership just said to be sure to check my oil level once a month now that it is close to 100,000. Did not tell me why. Got a check engine oil warning this week and the oil was bone dry, with no leaks to be found. Really not happy. Fortunately, we checked it right away or the engine would have been ruined.

My 2007 Toyota Prius sucks up gas like a frat boy w/a beer bong! I am having to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so (in fact, I have 30+ empty oil containers; I'm hoping to find a place that can recycle them, rather than dumping them in the garbage/landfill)

This problem has been going on for a LONG TIME, but it is definitely getting worse; I had just added 2 quarts less than a month or two ago, and the dipstick was just about bone-dry the other day. I went on Google and found out there may be a problem with the pistons, or something to that effect, causing excessive oil consumption. That's upsetting, because the mechanic indicates that this problem can cause the engine to wear out faster, which will lead to huge repair or replacement costs.

I've read so many posts about Toyota Prius owners being turned away by the dealership with issues of oil use under normal vehicle operation. I'm up to one quart per 1500 miles, that is heavier use than my 1990 Honda Civic with one dead cylinder!

I've been pushed off by the dealer for quite some time, and wish they'd be held accountable.
