After searching online I share in the suffering in a major problem with the 2006 Expedition. Bought the vehicle in 2009 and since then the car has shut off in the middle of driving at least 25 times. "engine failsafe mode" appears in the dash. Most of the time we are able to throw it in neutral and crank it back up but there has been a couple times where engine would not turn over. This has been very scary due to the fact it has happened to my wife who was on the interstate once and turning left and almost t-boned with kids in the car. Unbelievable how Ford won't step up and recall the vehicles with such a major problem. Maintenance issue? Yeah right. A lot of mechanics are saying it's a throttle body issue, it either needs to be cleaned real good or replaced and it can cost anywhere from $200-$700. WTF.

I had this problem just like many others. But would like to know if the car still safe to drive or not. Had the same light on twice already on the highway. Sent to fix and spent $800+ on it. Not quite sure if they really fix the problem or not since same thing happen again two days after I pick up car form shop.

Don't want to take risk while all family is in. I am using reg gas and will stay the same. Has anyone had it fix in the dealer and problem come back again? Please drop a line let me know gkenny_2000 at yahoo dot com.

I too have had issues with our vehicle shutting off and displaying the engine fail safe mode. I was crossing the road yesterday when it happened and was almost t-boned with my two small children in the vehicle.

In January the truck started to shutter and we took it in and had the fuel system cleaned and an engine coil replaced. It seemed to be doing better then it start to shut off randomly. It seemed to only shut off in the morning displaying the engine fail safe mode.

CALL the FORD CUSTOMER CENTER at 800-392-3673 and report your problem. They can not attempt to fix it unless it is diagnosed by a FORD dealership. There are programs out there to assist with the financial aspect of the repair. ALSO, call the National Highway Safety Board at 800-424-9393.

I am contacting our local service manager at the dealership to inquire about a no charge diagnosis. I will update when I know more.

Twice now while driving the fail safe engine light has come on and the engine stalled. Once while my wife was driving at about 20 mph (and she threw it in park while moving, OUCH). Then a second time with me driving again <20 mph. I was able to put it in neutral and start right up with no further problems.

This is the BEST web site on the web!!!!! Yea I mean it!!!

After reading the other 2006 expedition reviews and complaints with this same issue how can it not be a recall issue?

Thank God I bought this car used!

Driving on freeway 65-75 mph, lost of power truck shuts off. Engine light turns on... Pull to the side of the road waited 10 minutes and turn truck on. Engine turns off on sharp turns and acceleration on freeway speeds? Took it into ed kennley ford dealer and they tested and stated it was the fuel pump, fuel filter? Will cost 1500 dollars to replace. Paid $40 for the check up and walked out. Had it checked with another ford dealer check it for a 2nd opinion and found no problems.

I switched to better fuel and once in awhile shifting and loss of power on freeways. Time for a tune up at 50k miles. And come to find out local mechanics won’t touch 2006 5.4L engines due to the fact too many problems with happen with tune ups? Stuck at a loss and thinking ill end up paying an arm and a leg just for a tune up etc.

Same story as everyone else...my wife was driving my kids around in the "Mom Mobile" when the thing died and said Fail Safe on the dash. Yeah...real safe when your car dies driving down the road and you loose your power steering and brakes. I called Ford to complain and just spent $330 buying a new throttle body. I hope that is the issue! Everything I've read online and the service manager at Ford agreed that is the fix.

Expedition is at shop. This is the third time it has had to be towed (third year in a row). I was driving down main road at 60 mph, engine fail safe light comes on and lose power. I tried restarting and it starts, then light back on and stalls once again. I have had the throttle body and motor assembly replaced once a year for the past two years. Mechanic tells me today that codes show the fuel pump (?) is stuck open. This is exactly what the problem was before. I told him that I have had to replace part before and he states it should be a recall!! I called Ford the previous two times I have had to replace throttle body assembly and they tell me they are aware of the problem, however, they don't have any solution for it so it is NOT a recall and doesn't look to ever be. I had a 1998 expedition, never had any problems which is why I purchased the 2006. As soon as I can dump this vehicle I will be looking at something other than Ford.

Update from May 3, 2011: As expected the problem was the throttle body assembly. At a cost of $435 it is fixed for now. I have submitted a complaint to the National Safety Board and suggest that everyone with same problem do the same. Its a disaster just waiting to happen!!!

Update from Jul 13, 2015: have again experienced the "fail safe mode" & throttle body needs replacing. This is now the 4th time. I have 163,000 miles. Why has there never been a recall??? I read the same problems over and over with the Expedition and see NSB has only investigated other Ford vehicles

I love my suv. It has shut off while driving serveral times. I thought was just bad gas until I came across this complaint site. I have changed gas several times, stopped going to certain gas stations, used fuel injection cleaner a few times but it still cuts off sometimes while driving. I was driving to St Louis driving about 70 mph in heavy traffic when it just suddenly shut down with no warning. My family was in the vehicle with me. I was absolutely horrified. I managed to pull off to the right shoulder shut everything off waited about 5 min & turned it back on. It cranked back up, but the engine remained on. After reading on this site I am going to have the throttle looked at. I hope it works.

This is crazy. I am a loyal Ford customer. This is the 5th FORD I have owned. I am so angry right now it maybe my last. I have children in my car with me and this thing just shuts off. No warning just no power. When will ford pay attention and make this right. I am not buying another unless this is fixed.

I bought this car back in November 2010 and it's now March 21st 2011 - I have a 2006 Expedition which is my wifes car - She told me that the car started turning off on her randomly - We took the car to the Ford dealership and they told us that the throttle body needs to be replaced - almost $800 - This is absurd - I can't believe that that this little part would cost that much

I agree with everyone here on this forum - This is simply horrible - Ford needs to recall this part - I have 3 children and I could not imagine the car shutting off going 70 miles per hour on the freeway

The fail safe light just came on and it sounds like a serious issue. People have had their cars shut off driving 60 m.p.h. on the highway. Ford will not warranty this repair and it costs $ 600 - $ 800. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed. They said everyone that complains about this should call Ford also, so they may end up recalling the vehicle. I have been a loyal Ford driver for over 20 years and if this is not corrected FREE OF CHARGE, I will never purchase another Ford. I am also going to the News Channels to tell them of the issue.

JUST AS ALL THE OTHERS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND THE ENGINE FAIL SAFE LIGHT COMES ON...THE TRUCK LOOSES POWER. LUCK FOR ME THE FEW TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH BY FORD IN THE FORM OF A RECALL. WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOME TO GET KILLED ON THE ROAD BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO ACT. THIS IS OUR 2ND EXPEDITION. I WOULD SAY I'M A FORD TRUCK LOVER BUT IF NOTHING IS DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM....THE SUBURBAN SURE LOOKS GOOD TO ME.

My car has now had several engine failures. We took it to the dealer we purchased the car from used. They "fixed" it by replacing the Mass Air Flow", which DID NOT fix the problem. The car turned off again while driving. This has happened with acceleration and while coasting (70 mph) down the interstate. This is terrifying and quite a serious problem considering people's LIVES are at stake. I have children that I am very concerned about. We will be going to Ford next and they will fix the problem or the media is our next stop.

Hello Everyone I am a Professional Bass Fisherman I travel over 50,000km a year all over North America, I have always been a ford guy. I had explorers for years and thought, well lets go bigger, so I purchased this 2006 Expedition! I was so happy, lots of room, awesome towing until at about 112,000km my engine light came on I took it to the dealer and they said it was a emission code so I changed an oxygen sensor. wow that worked for about three days and pow the light was on again! I took it back and they said well its the same code so they said it could be a coil or the catalytic converter, I said clear the code. I wanted to try something. I had the codes cleared put premium fuel and the light never came back on! Oh boy one day about a month later I was low on fuel, I went in and put regular fuel boom within a day light was back on!

Here i go again back to the dealer they check the code they say its a catalytic converter i told them about the gas they said that had nothing to do with it so i still wasnt convinced took my truck to a custom exhaust shop they looked at the catalytic and said it was working as intended and they they are usually good for at least 200,000km

so i drove on premium fuel for about one month until one day going down the highway at 110kmh the engine went into fail safe mode just missed getting killed by a transport truck quick thinking i put it in neutral and started it and went fine 2km ahead same thing this time it did it again and would not start now i am in the centre lane of a busy highway luckily i had enough momentum to keep moving and got into the right shoulder.

I had it towed to ford they told me it was a catalytic converter an alternator and a bad battery as well as the throttle body! Had them all replaced i have driven about a hundred miles since no engine light yet! I phoned ford they said they were unaware of any such problem! I DONT THINK SO!

I guess they are waiting for someone to get killed! I found it interesting that from 2007 forward same engine no problems weird for a problem that no one knows about!

Be careful take it to a ford dealer and ask to check the Throttle Body! and only use 87 or higher octane!

I hope this helps someone! I think i'm going to trade in for a Suburban!!!

While driving the car will go into "engine safemode" no gas throttle then shuts off! I've had this in for service twice with ford saying they can't find the problem! Of course, I'm off warranty as of last week and what does it do?! Shuts off while driving on the Boston expressway! No breakdown lane, no pull offs, stuck in the dead middle of the road with my daughter. Car has to be turned off, and started back up, but sometimes it takes a few minutes to start! This has been to ford a couple of times now and they've seen codes and repaired coils 1, 2 and 3, then they say it's your catalytic converter, but no issues with throttle??? How stupid is this....no code no problem? I guess we'll just wait till the car stops again and a truck comes and rams me off the highway. Way to go Ford, here I come GM.

My wife Bought a 2006 Ford Expedition. A day later we were riding to meet someone. Upon making a turn, as I proceeded to press the accelerator pedal, I noticed there was no acceleration. After trying this a second and third time, I looked at the instrument cluster and noticed there was a light in the shape of a wrench was lit. I looked at the rpm gauge and it was at idle revs. So I pulled off to the side of the road. After shutting car off and restarting everything seemed fine. Took in to dealership where we bought it from 2 days later. Waiting to hear what they say.

I was driving to my parents home from work. Thankfully, the Expedition went into Fail Safe Engine Mode as I turned into their driveway. This has happened to me on 3 separate occasions & has been very scary. The first time it happened, I was driving on the highway with my 3 kids. This scared me to death. Another time, I had my kids, and I knew to shut the engine off, restart and the truck drove just fine. The third time I was driving an old country road.

This is UNSAFE!!!!! I scared that I'm going to have a deadly accident with my kids in the truck. My husband is going to look into it some more, I've read the other posts & I'm hoping this problem can get resolved. I'd rather trade in my truck than risk my kids lives!!! WHY HASN'T FORD DONE A RECALL!!!!

Our family just experienced the engine failsafe mode in the last 2 weeks - seemed like when it was really cold out. As others have said, shut off, restart and you are fine. But very scary moments in traffic and dangerous when the car shuts off and you have nowhere to go. It sounds like Ford covered somebody's expenses for the repair...please tell us how the rest of us without warranties can follow-suit, maybe we need to band together on this one.

Thanks for not taking bailout money Ford, but does someone have to get seriously hurt before you fix this dangerous issue?
