CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Chevy Astro Van has a solid reputation with very low complaint rates. The only problem now is finding one with low miles.

Not only is the 2000 Astro Van reliable, but since they were built on a truck powertrain, they can tow 5,500/5,000 lbs (RWD/AWD) -- almost double what other minivans can.

The Chevy Astro is mechanically identical to the GMC Safari.

I entered a parking lot at 10 mph and slowed to 5 mph and turned left into a parking space and tried to stop. The brakes did not work and I crashed into the vehicle next to me. I immediately checked the brake fluid level and it was full. No ABS light has ever been on, and I just recently passed my vehicle safety check with no codes on the system.

Hi, I was driving this van when all of a sudden it stops. I had a very hard problem of trying to get off the road with no brakes or steering. I had it towed into service. They replaced everything fuel pump, sending unit, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor and reset the timing. It never did show up a check engine light or showed a code that something was wrong. I drove it two days later and it did the same thing. They checked it out and drove it again for a week and it happen again. I spent $1200 trying to get this safe to drive. It is as if the key was shut off. Finally with some of my knowledge about what can cause this to happen I checked the battery. It was only one year old. It showed up as bad under a load. When I took the van back to the repair shop they said battery showed good. Finally I took the battery back to auto zone they showed it as bad also and replaced it. Never had a problem after that. So the problem you are having with the key switch in all those cars you may have to double check the battery's. voltage to the microprocessor should stay within limits of apx 8 volts. This might be more of a problem than the key switch. Thanks for reading this letter.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Astro van. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle he noticed that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the fuel lines were severely corroded and needed to be replaced. In addition, the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake pedal sunk into the floor board. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the brakes lines were also corroded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 82,257 and the current mileage was 88,000. Updated 12/30/13 the consumer also stated rust caused the ABS to engage at low speeds on dry pavement, causing the vehicle to continue to move, even though the brake pedal was depressed.

ABS system activated on dry pavement while parking the car. Brake peddle went to the floor car kept moving it seem to want to accelerate. It hit the opposing parked vehicle. This has been a intermittent problem. Mechanics could not find problem prior to accident after accident had vehicle repaired at Chevy dealer hubs and sensors replaced this vehicle is very scary to drive.even after repairs the ABS system can still function inappropriately without any warning.
