Problem with 2005 Malibu LT V6 with check engine light coming on and gas gauge reading empty, complete with bells and lights and words "LOW FUEL" flashing on radio screen immediately after filling the gas tank. It would stop once I put around 30 miles on that tank of gas, but then would start up again intermittently. The gas tank always reads either full or empty. I never know for sure how much gas is in the vehicle and have to rely on trip settings to prevent running out of gas. Now it's beginning to happen more often and it is very ANNOYING!!! I noticed there has been many reports of this and I am curious as to why GMC has not issued a recall to correct this problem? Last October I took the car to the dealer I bought it from and told him the problem I was experiencing. He told me to leave my car and they would get to it when they could. WHAT???!!!! I work for a living...I don't have time to drop off my car and hope it gets "looked at" sometime within the next millennium. I asked to make an appointment, but again was told to just drop it off.....What do we consumers need to do to get a recall on this problem?

This is a huge deal and now that I'm having additional issues with the computer system of the vehicle, I should have traded it in for something new. This was the worst money spent!

The gas gauge goes haywire every time I fill my car up. It goes from full to E. I took the car in to find out cause the check engine light comes on all the time. The dealership where I bought the car from said its my sensor to the gas tank. They want to charge me 100 dollars to fix it which i feel I shouldn't pay because this is the highest complaint on this car besides the steering. I feel GM needs to recall this part..

On a full tank after driving around for a few minutes, the fuel needle will drop to empty and the fuel light will come on. A short while later the needle will start rising back to full, before dropping again. The problem works itself out after about 15-20 miles of driving, but comes back once you fill the tank back up. It's a minor annoyance, but I can't help but wonder whether it's a symptom of a greater issue.

fuel gage goes to [e] after filling tank

when filling tank you cannot fill to auto shutoff at pump. you will have a problem with gas gage going to [E]. you know how many gallons you need without going past [F]. when going past [F]in any distance the problem will accure. you then have to travel till the gets a signal it is no longer past [F] then it will operate correctly. each quarter tank equals [X amount of gallons].

The gas gauge is erratic, never shows the proper amount of fuel when it IS working, I understand Chevy is having the problem with many of its 2005 cars and trucks as well.

There should be some kind of general recall !

I have a 2005 Malibu and the fuel pump went out. I ordered one and was sent the wrong one apparently there are 2 different models on the 2005. Also my remote key doesn't work. I would not recommend this car to anyone.

Fuel gauge continually goes from full to empty and annoying buzzer sounds off. Never displays proper fuel level, must depend on calculating miles driven to determine when I need fuel. Ran out of gas one time. Cost for a replacement fuel pump is $ 514.00 not counting labor, and of course you have to drop the gastank to replace the fuel pump.

The fuel gauge works when it wants. The annoying ding drives you crazy. filling the tank doesn't help. And the check engine light comes on until you have it turned off time and time again.

Figures, just got done paying this POS and now the fuel gauge is pegging full then drops to empty with the annoying chime. I have to set my trip meter to figure out when to re-fill. Is it a simple fix? How much am I looking at $$ wise. Thanks

I don't mind it so much on the highway as I can pretty well estimate how far I can go. But the city mileage is a real crap shoot.

I'll have to replace the fuel sensor gauge and may as well do the whole fuel pump assembly as it is attached to it.

Update from Oct 31, 2010: Sensor and pump assembly replaced. Wife is happy even though it was costly. We can now trust the fuel gauge, especially during city driving.

This is the biggest piece of crap! The Front End thumps and rattles. The electrical dash components work when they want to. The fuel gauge dances between full and empty, the low fuel chime rings along with that of course. If you drive with the rear windows down it makes the most annoying noise. I doubt I will ever Buy another General Motors product as most of the issues I have read about began as much as 3 or 4 model years ago. Why doesn't GM feel the need the fix these problems? No wonder Toyota is passing them as the largest!
