problem #2

Dec 212012

Malibu Maxx LT 3.5V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,000 miles

Intake manifold gasket bad from day one. A gallon of anti-freeze every other month for the first 6 months. Replaced Intake manifold gasket. Still losing anti-freeze just much less. 11 months later replaced the actual Intake manifold AND gasket. Still losing anti-freeze just much much less. 9 months later I complained to the dealer one more time. They said it was fine, no fix needed. 40 months later 6 months past ext warranty (60/75000) (but not past mileage [only 73,000] ... BOOM, dumps anti-freeze in a cylinder ... piston pushes up, anti-freeze doesn't compress well ... has to go somewhere blows through head gasket. What should have been fixed correctly the first time. What should have been a recall (so many of the chevy 3.5V6 have this problem). A plastic intake manifold that fails so easily should have a replacement with a metal one that matches the metals around it so that it doesn't fail. I'm reading that many different engines with the plastic intake manifold is having the same problem. Most don't totally fail until around 150,000 miles I was just one of those lucky ones. Don't have real numbers but this same engine is standard use in the Impala and Equoinx and many other GM cars as an option. Reading about this engines issues on the net I calculate over 30% of the chevy 3.5V6 engines have the intake manifold gasket issue and half of them go BOOM (by 150,000 miles). Don't buy a chevy with a 3.5V6, you have a better chance of winning craps in Vegas then getting 150K miles out of that engine.

Malibu Maxx LT 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,983 miles

This problem was not solved until the third visit to the dealer. First they replaced the coolant tank, a month later the coolant tank cap and finally in February 2010 they put in a new water pump. This solved the problem but I felt it should have been repaired on the first visit.
