This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Brakes failed to stop vehicle when traveling over bumpy roads coming to a stop dealer can't find the problem on three trips for service, I can duplicate the problem almost at will, why can't the dealer.
Whenever ABS brakes were applied vehicle would fail to stop. Would lift foot off & applied brakes again before vehicle was able to stop. Has taken to dealer 3 different times, each time brake problem could not be duplicated. Problem was intermittent.
Consumer was traveling about 30mph on highway and applied the brakes, brakes locked up, and vehicle slid off the road into a enbankment and into a tree.
When the ABS is activated due to a single wheel event (e.g. braking over a bump in road), the brake pedal goes almost to the floor and the vehicle slowly come to a stop. I have ended up in an intersection once, and almost hit the vehicle in from of me three different times. It appears that the ABS programming is too sensitive to this type of condition. If uncorrected, it will most likely lead to serious injuries or a death. I was lucky when I ended up in the middle of an intersection that no oncoming traffic existed.
When applying the brakes pedal goes all the way down to the floor. And doesn't grab at all. Then, a few second later, brake pedal grabs, and vehicle will stop.
Steering shaft connected to steering column was loose. Dealership replaced it. Also, when consumer was traveling at a high speed anti-lock brakes were not operable, and when he applied brakes vehicle vibrated.
The brakes failed at 30mph and I almost hit someone the ABS went out on me, and I had no brakes for about 1 minute. The pedal was hard and the truck would not stop. Dealer has it now replacing a ABS part.
While driving down the road applied brakes, and pedal will go right to the floor. Had to pump brakes for vehicle to stop. Contacted dealer, he can't duplicate the problem.
While driving and appying the brakes vehicle will not stop. Took vehicle to dealer on the 12th of April, 2000. They replaced master cylinder/booster, and and ABS brakes. But, problem still occurs.
Brakes constantly went out. While driving consumer would press the brake pedal to slowdown, but automobile would continue to move as if brakes were not pressed at all. After brakes were pressed a couple of times, then automobile would stop. Automobile has been taken to the dealer and held for 3 weeks. One day after the consumer picked up the automobile, brakes went out again. This could cause consumer to have a serious accident.
Brakes get hard, then suddenly give and lock up. Several near misses due to increased stopping distance. Clunking noise in front end that can be felt in steering wheel.
When driving vehicle and coming to a stop hit a bump, and brakes dropped down close to the floor, reducing braking power as it dropped. Consumer feels it is unsafe if vehicle won't stop at the distance where consumer is trying to stop. Took to dealer, and they said it was normal with those type of brakes.
While driving at low speed consumer could step on the brakes, and the brakes will feel hard. But vehicle would not stop, resulting in extended stopping distance.
