This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Whenever the brakes were applied they would fail to operate properly. This would cause vehicle to have an extended stopping distance. Would have no warning. Taking vehicle to dealership to check brakes out. Consumer states that the brake lights did not come on at all.
I was informed by service personnel that they have seen several ABS controller failures. This is an expensive($800+)part to replace and there should not be a high volume of failures. The ABS system detected the failure before I started to drive. The nature of the failure permits the controller to continue to run even with the key turned off. It only stops when power is removed by crawling underneath the vehicle. If left running the module gets hot to the touch and eventualy runs down the battery.
ABS warning light came on. ABS system would not stop running after truck was shut off. Fuse was removed. GM dealer said system had to be replaced at a cost of $950. GM contacted; no response. Have spoken to two other people in my office who have same truck with same problem.
ABS pump does not disengage when ignition is off, motor continues to run. This is caused by water that splashes onto ABS system that is located behind left front wheel.

ABS system has been failing since the time I purchased the vehicle. ABS engages when braking on rough surfaces causing vehicle to coast and not come to a stop. When ABS is engaged no control of braking or steering is available. Now on 10/10/01 I was pulling out of my driveway and I heard and felt a loud vibrating. I shut off the vehicle and the vibrations continued. I called the dealer service center at marquart and they said they knew what the problem was and that I needed to pull the fuse for the ABS or it would drain the battery. The service tech said that he has seen this happen quite a bit and replacement is needed. Well now I have no ABS and it is over $1,000 to fix. This is a known safety problem and needs to be taken care of by the manufacturer.
Check out my other listed complain on this site, the ODI id # is 745532. I'm just posting another complaint because I haven't heard a word from NHTSA regarding this issue. Silverado ABS modulators need to be recalled! they are getting water in them. There are numerious listing on this site regarding this issue. NHTSA needs to investigate this issue! it is ridiculous for consumers to take the hit on a failed, poorly designed piece of equipment. The more technology advances the more theses electronic units cost to replace. The direction we're headed in is that ten years from know when a electronic unit fails at a thousand miles over and out of warranty, it will have to sit in the driveway because the average american wont have the cash available to fix it. I had a ABS modulator fail at 54,000 mile, the unit would not turn off, even with the key out. I had to pull the fuse to stop it. The dealer would not do a xxxx thing about it and neither would GM. The dealerships are rteplacing alot of these units.that means there is a defect (poor design) with this unit. Anybody with this defect should get a new and improved unit for free regardless of warranty! I have a more descriptive explanation of the problem on this site, again the ODI id # is 745532. I'm an engineer and it pisses me off when a company hides behind closed doors when an issue like this arises. It pisses me off even more when a government Agency (NHTSA) that is suppose to protect the consumers saftey fails to contact me regarding this issue. I'm beginning to wonder if NHTSA actually read these complaints. I submitted ODI id 745532 five or six months ago, may be even longer than that and still no word. Any body that wants to contact me regarding this issue an email me at jabrant@email.sae.org.
