The valve cover cracked, causing a vacuum leak that triggered the check engine light to come on. The car needed a new valve cover kit (cover and gasket) to be installed. The cause of the failure is the valve cover being made from injection molded plastic, which failed after extended exposure to typical engine temperatures.
