CarComplaints.com Notes: There are a fair-number of power steering related complaints which is a continuation of problems from the previous model year. Considering the problem tends to happen beyond the standard warranty (73k+) it's best to avoid this vehicle or at least be prepared for the $1,300+ repair.

Just add the failure of the power steering system to the list of problems with the Traverse/Enclave/Acadia/Outlook family. Noticed oil on my driveway. Took it to dealer and they said, in addition to the need to replace the water pump which seems to be part of an overall GM pandemic, the rack and pinion system needs to be replaced related to the leak. The price: $1,750. Covered by warranty or recall despite the onslaught of noted complaints? Absolutely not.
At 98,000 miles, I would not have expected a $38,000 vehicle to require a completely new power steering system, water pump and the transfer case replacement that occurred less than 6 months ago. Water pump and transfer case were covered by warranty which is "great" but is really sort of embarrassing to GM that their vehicles can't make it to 100,000 miles without such catastrophes. The latest bill of $1,750 (+ routine scheduled service of $550 = about $2,300 today!) plus the warranted items over the past six months would have been more than $4,500 out of my pocket.
What's worse? The fact that I also have an Acadia and have a slew of issues with that including an airbag sensor that comes on intermittently but isn't under warranty (mine is an 07 but of course the 08s and beyond seem to be covered as was the warranted work performed on my Traverse airbag sensor. hmmmm, any chance the recall should be made against the 07s as well?) How about the new transmission I had to purchase for he Acadia at about 70,000 miles that wasn't under warranty but the dealer charged me $1,700 after I pleaded my case.
On top of a complete lemon of a Chevy Venture van that I nursed back to health over a 10 year period before unloading it on the dealership as part of a trade-in, I have to say that I gave American manufacturing a chance and I think that I'm just done. Seriously, how much do I have to pay for having price in America?
