Brakes were working totally fine when I drove an hour away into the city to take a professional certification exam. After a few hours of testing, I couldn't wait to get in my car to drive home. When I put my foot on the brake pedal while it was in park (but engine started) everything felt normal. When I put it into reverse to back out of the spot, my foot went all the way to the floor. There was no warning previous to this that there was ANY problem. I had the Brake Booster replaced 10 months prior. There was NO warning that my brakes would give out on me at all. Luckily, mine happened (both times), in parking lots, not in higher speed situations.

Fortunately, it was a nearly vacant lot, so I tried backing up to see what would happen and the brake again had to go ALL THE WAY to the floor and made a grinding sound (like stopping on gravel sort of). It did not stop very quickly. It rolled to a stop. (Mind you, this is only backing out of the spot.) I got on You Tube and typed in 2012 Ford Edge, and of course there were many folks complaining about this issue. It is related to the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit, although my ABS light wasn't on. Luckily, a gentleman on You Tube had "quick temporary fix" which worked. He described going in reverse up to 20-25 MPH and slamming on the brakes "grenade stopping" he called it. After doing this in the lot 7 times (frightening given I didn't know if the brakes would engage at all), my brake pedal popped back into its normal distance from the floorboard and it felt like a hard pedal again. I extremely cautiously drove home. It worked fine for one day. The same problem reoccurred the next day. Same reverse/grenade stop procedure brought it back to how it it should be. Apparently air or something gets in the armature of the HCU unit (the recall claims due to corrosion from brake fluid, causing them to stay open sometimes. And other times they close shut, so basically it's a crap shoot trying to know when your brakes will stop working due to a faulty valve not shutting.

After lots of research, it seems to me that the 2012 Edges SHOULD HAVE been included in the recall initiated by NHTSA in 2016 and then upgraded the recall in 2018 to include more than a million 2006-2012 Fusions, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan. Same year, same company, just not my "model", the Edge. My Ford Dealer diagnosed the problem as HCU, and said he sees it all the time. They suggested I call Ford and see if there were any programs available that could support the repair given the same issue as the recall and same year, just different model. They thought they might consider at least splitting the cost.

After being transferred around to different departments between Customer Relationship Center and Customer Satisfaction people, and eventually held captive on hold for 45 minutes, the hold disconnected and a recording told me they were now closed and to call back Monday during business hours. GRRR. I waited until Monday, returned my call to the Ford Customer Satisfaction folk who did not satisfy my needs at all. she told me to file a complaint with NHTSA as they may expand the recall. I returned to the dealership praying the brakes don't fail again and leaving plenty of following distance and planned "outs" in the event that they failed when I drove there. They told me it would take a day, the part was on sight. They then held my care hostage there for five days, as they said they discovered there was a Master Cylinder issue that had to be addressed also.

Since I didn't authorize this repair, and they neglected to return my many calls during the five days it was in the shop at Ford, they agreed to cover the Master Cylinder repair which was about 350 in parts and labor. So, there is that. I am writing this to say, IF YOU HAVE A 2012 FORD EDGE with a SOFT PEDAL/Spongy brake that has failed (or likely eventually will) PLEASE, PLEASE write a letter to NHTSA so we can get this recall to include our Edges also. Its the only reason I had it repaired at the dealership service department, because I'd like to think someday I'll get reimbursed the $1,435 out of my pocket for a seriously dangerous faulty part which clearly SHOULD have been included in the other Recall: 19S54.

CALL THE NHTSA 1-888-327-4236. File a complaint with them and tell them you believe this safety recall needs to be reopened with further investigation into the FORD EDGE. (2012 at least) Safety Recall 19S54 NHTSA acknowledged their own difficulty in diagnosing which cars were affected because the valves sometimes become "unstuck" and function normally... until they don't. They analyzed the HCU in these other Fords from cars involved in major collisions, many with fatalities, and found that in fact the corrosion in the HCU was the cause. Don't wait for this to happen to you!

If you additionally feel compelled, write to Ford, PO Box 6248, Dearborn, MI 48126. Complain to them directly and tell them you feel they need to look more closely at other models experiencing the same issue. Complaints are ALL over the internet.

Ford has an issue with the Edge braking system. I have replaced the brake booster and the Master Cylinder, and the problem is still there? They need to recall and fixed and refund me my monies for the booster and cylinder. Are they going to wait until there is death before this gets their attention. I have not even driven my car in weeks. Please Ford, wake up before it is too late.

I paid in 2019 to have the brake buster replaced and now the brakes have gone out again. I thought Ford was working on refunding the money. I never received any refund. And now the same thing is happing again with the brakes. I had to tow the car. I will not have a car for several days. If this is covered under customer satisfaction, then I expect to not be charged.

The brakes just quit working. The pedal would go to the floor. Had the power booster replaced. Then, the next day, the brakes just seemed to lock up and not release. Got it home. The brakes were smoking, so I cooled it off with a garden hose. then took back to the service station. They had it three days. They called to day and said it was ready for pickup. What a pain. I've had many vehicles, but never had this kind of problem. Makes me sorry I bought a Ford again.

Tried to have car fixed several times since December to no avail. It is currently sitting at Courtesy Ford in Rome, Georgia. I haven't been able to drive it since December. Every time it was supposedly fixed, I would drive it, only to roll through another stop sign. No one can seem to figure out the problem. I can give you more details if you would like to email me. I'm out about $2,000.00 at this point, which I think is outrageous considering it isn't even fixed! Lisa

After 5 months of having brake booster fixed, I once again had to brake hard. Brakes went to the floor again. I am in city traffic about 50 miles from home. I make it home and take it to Ford dealer again. This time it was the master cylinder. Once again I drive home feeling good about having brakes.

ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR. HAD TO USE THE MANUAL PARKING BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR.

THERE WAS NO GRADUAL FADING OF THE BRAKES TO WARN OF A PENDING PROBLEM. TALK ABOUT SCARY.

Back in 2013 my brake pedal started going all the way to the floor while trying to brake and wouldn't stop. Took it to Ford dealer where they replaced my brake booster free of charge.

2019 brake pedal is going all the way to the floor again, back to Ford deal I go, and this time they replaced the Master Cylinder for $400.00.. Three weeks later my brakes are doing the same EXACT thing going all the way to the floor.

I am taking it back to Ford yet again to see what they can find AGAIN.. There is something faulty with the brake system on the Ford Edge but Ford doesn't want to issue a recall.

Maybe a class action lawsuit when people start dying due to faulty brakes will make the Ford company take notice.

I recently had the brake booster replaced in the last year and my issue with the brakes has started again. Also my rear driver door ajar light is constantly on. I will be going back to the dealer again to see if they can once again fix the issue. One day maybe Ford will issue a recall.

I have a 2012 Ford Edge and while I was driving it the brake pedal went all the way to the floor, without any warnings and it almost made me had an accident. thanks God there were no cars in front of me. i took it to the mechanic to have it checked and he told me that most likely is the master cylinder. I looked into the problem online and I see many people having the same issue. The mechanic somehow did something that is working again. He must've pumped the pedal or something, but warned me to have it fixed because is gonna get worse. i could've gotten killed if i was driving at fast speeds on the highway. How come there hasn't been a recall regarding this problem. My first time purchasing a Ford and my last.

Anytime the ABS engage the brakes stop working effectively. The first few times it happened it was scary and I called the dealership about the booster recall. All they told me was my description does not seem like a booster problem and that they would charge me $100 to look at the vehicle. When I do an internet search everyone else says its the booster and that the recall replaced it for free. So I had the brakes bled and keep driving it. Today it happened again and we went flying into the intersection and almost got hit. I had all 3 kids in the car with me. I am never driving this car again. Its being traded in tomorrow. Brakes should work.

On 9/28/16, had brake issues. Ford replaced Brake Booster as per recall. In addition, master cylinder was leaking, and same replaced for 127.33. This occurred at 20,711 miles. Not a very good track record for my Edge, in that this repair along with door ajar latch replaced twice, within 24k miles!

The brake pedal went to the floor without warning and almost caused me to crash into the vehicle in front of me on two different occasions. My initial visit to Gwinnett Place Ford, I was told that there was a recall for the problem but I was unable to leave my vehicle there on that date.

On a later date when having my brakes and oil changed I mention the brake problem and I was told that they were not aware of any recalls and before they go slapping on any parts (Repair shop Manager) they have to take the vehicle in for inspection. I went for a test drive with the manager but the brakes were normal. Once we returned to the shop, the manager asked one of the service techs to look up recall information for my vehicle. They did find the recall and the manager stated that they did have the part in stock. This was on a Saturday 3/21/15 when had my rear brakes done so we scheduled the repair for 3/23/15. I brought my vehicle in that Monday morning at 8am and the repair was complete at noon. Today is Sunday 3/29/2015 and so far all is good.

I noticed this problem and it seems to be getting progressively worse. I took it in to my dealer who checked it out thoroughly and told me they could not find anything wrong. As I drove it off the lot, the pedal went to the floor quickly and I did a U-turn and asked if they test drove it. So a mechanic came out and we drove it a mile or two and he told me this was normal and I probably didn't notice this in the beginning. I left the dealership again and 8 miles down the road, I call Ford customer relations and they gave me a case number and said someone would call in 4 days. This was yesterday 8/16/2013. We decided to check the Internet to see if anyone else has had this problem and it appears that not only our model year but all the way back to 2007, they been having brake booster problems. I now appreciate people taking the time and trouble to share with others about their problems and when the Ford people call, I will not accept "this is normal" as an answer. I purchased it new and I know after 24k miles what is normal.
