CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

Vehicle just stopped shifting into reverse. Can shift into forward gears just not reverse. Will have to get it checked to see if transmission overhaul is required.

  • Automatic transmission

When I took my vehicle in for service to find out why it seemed to only go into reverse when it felt like it, they couldn't find anything wrong. There were no metal shavings and the fluid was fine. Told me that I would eventually have to get my transmission rebuilt. Seems to only go into reverse about 2 times after it's been parked for about 5 hours and will jump into reverse when I step on the gas. Just waiting for the other gears to go before getting transmission rebuilt.
