CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Escape has problems where the engine shuts down while driving. Ford finally issued a September 2014 recall. Time will tell if the recall fix really solves the problem.

However the 2005 Escape also has a defect where the PCM (Power Control Module) fries at around 100k miles. Ford extended the PCM warranty to 80,000 miles, but only after most owners were past the mileage limit. Now owners are on the hook for the average repair cost of over $2,000 (!!)

Escape LX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 180,000 miles

I bought my escape new and just a few months passed the transmission was replaced could not get car to move out of gear. The month of Jan. 2016 the transmission had to be replaced again. I have about 180,000 miles on the car. It sounds horrible something to do with suspension front and back. I have parked it cause I just don't have the 't afford to to put in it, I am on disability and every penny counts. I have to depend on help from friends and family for transportation. I am afraid to drive it at all every time I get in it something else is wrong. It also has rusted bad around the wheels. The interior headliner is falling down and off on the right passenger door. I can't afford to get a new car, and can't afford to put more money in this car. I just need a car that I can trust wont break down on me while driving it.

Escape XLT V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles

Took it back to the trans shop 5 times. They had issues with the drive axles leaking and wearing out. The rebuild lasted about 22000 miles then had to be rebuilt again by a decent shop.

Escape Limited 3.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 68,351 miles

I have owned a Ford product all my life and was a loyal fan until this last repair. After having owned 8 different Ford vehicles, only two were made with automatic transmissions. A 1984 Capri RS and my current 2005 Escape Limited. Now both vehicles with the automatic transmissions have had a similar transmission failure.

The Capri RS had left me stranded on a long trip with a $2600 repair bill and now my current issue with the Ford Escape. This recent repair on my Escape resulted in a loss of a vehicle for 3 weeks, due to incorrect parts order being sent to the car dealer, repair tuning issues and a failure of a brand new replacement bearing. Ford is said to provide an upgrade kit to resolve the transmission problems. If this is an upgrade to a known problem, why am I stuck with the bill for a poor design!!!!!

They just turned this loyal fan into a very disappointed owner. I previously suggested the Ford Escape to two other people who later bought one and now I feel so foolish. Thanks for that warm and fuzzy feeling about their product. They still are a four letter word in my book. JUNK!

Escape LS V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,000 miles

My transmission completely went, while my husband was in the hospital...on my way to see him (45 minutes away) I live in the country so naturally got stuck on the 10 mile stretch of road that goes through different towns. Asked for a police escort while waiting for AAA. They gave me an issue since I was past the point of my own town already (so they wouldn't drive me back up to my house)

Everyone I know is no less than 45 minutes away to help me. Got towed to a trans shop and was told it was completely ground down (they showed me the actual part) they were good. BUT it cost me 3500 not including that I had to rent a car for 5 days to visit my husband and to just get around.

It gave me NO prior alerts, no lights went off NOTHING. Had I known this was going to happen I would have not continued driving the car till it got that bad!

BOTTOM LINE......after we fixed THIS. Two months later the car got an engine knock. My husband made me trade it out the next day!

NOW own a different vehicle :) DID call the Ford dealer BTW....they had an attitude WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN!!!
