Brakes were recently serviced. Three weeks later, brakes began shuddering and making a grinding noise. Took vehicle into be serviced. Was charged for an inspection fee, plus replacement of a broken tone ring. Cost of a new tone ring is minimal (< $50 CDN) but inspection + labor brings the cost of this repair to about $300+ (CDN) and two days without being able to use my vehicle. No real option to avoid fixing this, as the tone ring apparently works in conjunction with the traction control with the 4WD for the Escape.

While you could avoid making the fix, it would leave you without ABS and probably only lead to more problems down the road.

I have never had a vehicle with reoccurring problems (4 times) like this. Always the same ABS & 4X4 lights are on, when this happens the anti- lock brakes don't work and not sure what else? I always have to go to a ford dealer to have it fixed. I e-mailed Ford with my complaint, and their response was thank you for being a loyal Ford Customer. I'm shopping for a new vehicle now and is NOT GOING TO BE A FORD !

My 2006 Escape has 2 cracked Tone Rings which is the same problem the 01-04 recalls were for. The dealer wants to charge $1600 to fix but its only a $24.99 part. They will tell you that the axle needs to be replaced but thats not true. I cant believe Ford can get away with this. I've read on the Internet that even the 2009 models are having this problem. So for the last 9 years they have been selling a cars knowing they haven't addressed this issue. I'm thinking about reporting this to Fox News and let them have a field day with it. Ford is nailing Toyota to the wall for their recalls. Its like the kettle calling the pot black. Its an outrage.
