CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Sometimes my car is good but about 2-3 times a month it just won't start. It takes about 5 minutes to get it going. I have called Ford and they told me to have my car towed the next time it happens and they will look at it. The only problem is, after a few minutes it will start and run fine. My father in law is a mechanic and has looked at it but can't find anything wrong. I have had this car for 3 years and it's always had this problem. i am definitely looking for something else, probably a Honda
