CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord ex coupe V6. I recently had the cable reel assembly fail on this vehicle (pn: 77900-S84-A22). This is the part that attaches the electrical connections from the steering wheel to the rest of the car. This part failed causing all of my switches on my steering wheel to fail and there is a high likelyhood that the airbag was inoperable also. The Honda dealer told me that these parts almost allways fail on 1998 Honda Accord. This part is critical to the operation of the airbag, and this creates a safety issue. Honda does not list a recall for this issue on this vehicle. Someone should look into this issue to see if a recall needs to be made.

On 3 occasions the car has died while accelerating up a hill. All the indicators light up on the dash. The car loses power steering and braking ability. It starts right up after this occurs. I explained to the technician that the car is hesitant when going up inclines. He told me this was normal.
