CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

The SRS light on my car has suddenly appeared and will not turn off. The dealer explained that it was probably a bad opds sensor because they have been receiving several complaints about it. I chose not to opt for the $600 repair. Perhaps also related is the fact that my side air bag indicator turns on frequently whenever a passenger shifts his weight to one side of the seat--it goes away once he moves back to the center of the front seat. It is a however a nuisance and is not what I expect from Honda.

I have a SRS light that continues to come on in my 2000 Honda Accord ex V6. I see that this is a common problem and Honda is not doing anything about it except charge people ridiculous prices to fix something that is a safety concern. One of the reasons I purchased the car was because it was suppose to be one of the safest, boy was I wrong. I travel over 500 miles a week and my family depends on me to come home everyday. God forbid I have an accident and the airbags don't deploy. Please look into this issue because the web is flooded with complaints and concerns.

The SRS light is lit on the dashboard of my 2000 Honda Accord ex. I took the car to my local dealer where they told me it would be $84 for a diagnostic of the problem. The dealer then called to tell me that the opds sensor is not working and it would need to be replaced. While the car was at the dealer, I got on the internet and researched the SRS light on Accord. I found out there is a service bulletin, dated April 23, 2004, issued by Honda for all 2000 2-door Accord (as well as many other models) declaring the SRS indicator comes on with SRS dtc 15-1, 15-2, 15-3, and probable cause is a faulty occupant position detection system (opds) unit. With that said, both the dealer and american Honda motor co., are aware of the service bulletin, and the faulty parts they sold in their automobiles and neither are willing to replace the opds sensor.

The contact complained about the air bag sensor. The air bag sensor indicator light (SRS) came on intermittently. The light came on every time the car was driven. The opds switch short circuited. The warranty on the switch was for only 36 months or 36,000 miles. The switch had not been repaired. Updated 11/29/2005 - the consumer also had problems with the seat belts since the vehicle was purchased. This problem was brought to the attention of the dealer but they claimed there was no problem.

I purchased a Honda Accord coupe in July 2000. Exactly 2 years to the day that I received the car, I brought it to the dealer because the SRS light on the dashboard came on while I was driving and stayed on. The dealer cleared a diagnostic code. 10 days later I brought it back for the same problem and they replaced the opds unit. Everything was ok for 2 years. In November 2004 I brought it to the dealer for the same problem. The dealer checked the codes and found none. In August 2005 again back to the dealer for the same problem.. they replaced the passenger's seat belt buckle, with in 2 days the SRS light came back on. It has been off and on since (as of 10/28/05)

I have 2000 Honda Accord LX (auto) and I have a problem with my air bag system. My SRS light turned on, however I can't recall when it started but it is safe to say that it's started a couple years back. But any ways, I have had my SRS system looked at and reset several times and the SRS light just keeps coming back on. I believe there is defect with the SRS system because several of my friend and colleagues at work have had the same problem. Can the NHTSA please look into this problem. Thank you.

Illuminated SRS light. Honda replaced sensor in July 2002; however had several instances where SRS light is illuminated since sensor replacement. The local dealership would reset system; however charged fee to test system. The local dealership also mentioned to not put anything in passenger seat to avoid light from coming on. Passenger seat is rarely occupied. Since extended warranty has expired, SRS light is illuminated once again.

2000 Honda Accord. The SRS (safety restraint system) light came on and stayed on. The consumer contacted dealership, and they said it was probably a switch that was under a recall. The light told them it something to do with the electrical system. Contacted my manufacturer, they said that vehicle was not recalled. SRS light has been coming on for about a month and a half. Consumer was concerned about his family's safety.

After changing the battery the SRS light illuminated about a year and a half ago. The consumer went to a dealer, and the dealer reset the system for the SRS air bags. This corrected the problem for the time being. Afterwards, the light illuminated again. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer noted this was an electronic interference or an issue with occupancy for the SRS. The consumer paid for the reset both on incidents. Now, the dealer said the opds occupant position detection sensor would need to be replaced. The consumer has not replaced this because he felt Honda should be responsible. No other repairs or corrections at this time. The dealer also indicated it would be senseless to reset the SRS since the repair have not been performed.

SRS warning light on 2000 Honda Accord ex V6 keeps on activating. I have sent my car to a local auto repair shop to have the car diagnosed on August 30, 2005. The mechanic, who is a master diagnostic technician and manager of the repair shop informed me he did not detect anything wrong, but a false alarm. He reset the SRS system. Again, the SRS warning light came back on 2 days later and brought back my car to have the SRS warning light reset on September 2, 2005. I found an article on the web indicating the Honda Accord having problems with the SRS warning light. www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/08/17/140535.html.

In Sept. 2003 the SRS warning light came on. After contacting the dealer who said the unit "fails test" we were informed this might involve replacement parts which would not be under warranty. Since this was a 2000 Honda Accord ex with only 49000 miles I felt this was an unwarranted repair. American Honda agreed to cover the repair. The SRS control unit was replaced on 10/3/03. On 10/8/03 we brought the car back to the dealer because the SRS light had come back on. This time the dealer said we needed a new seat buckle. This was replaced on 10/22/03. In (approximately) July 2005 the SRS light came on again. We contacted our auto repair shop and were told we would probably have to replace the unit again. This does not seem normal to have such a part fail so often. Also, the side airbag light would often come on, if a purse or bag was on our side next to the door. To date we have not brought the car in to be repaired again but are concerned that we don't know if the airbags will deploy in an accident.

I bought my 2000 Honda Accord brand new, off the lot. Two months after purchasing it, my SRS light went on. I called the salesperson who assured me that it was just a dashboard defect in that make and model -- nothing to worry about. At least once each year since, I've had to pay over $100 because the light came on again and the problem had to be re-diagnosed before the light was shut off. I've grown so used to having the light on and it just being a dashboard nuisance, I've come to ignore it. That was until this morning, when a Honda service person informed me that when it is on -- simple defect or not -- the airbags will not release during an accident. What if, based on the information -- or lack of information I've been given in the last five years -- I had an accident and no air bags deployed" how many other people are in this situation" a lot from the looks of the complaints filed on this site, along with complaints on the SRS issue posted on the internet overall. If it was simply a dashboard malfunction -- as it has been positioned to me in the past -- that would be one thing. But, when I called Honda's 800 number to confirm what the service rep told me and learned that he is correct -- the airbags will not deploy if that light is on...it is not just a simple dashboard issue...I want to make sure others know.

For past few years the SRS light would flick on and off. Last month it stayed on and the dealer charged me over $300 to replace the opds sensor and clear the codes. The passenger seat is generally unoccupied. I understand that you have started an investigation into this disarming of the airbag and wanted to report this.
