Chipmunks had nested in ventilation system. This is the second time in two months that I have had significant rodent damage to my car - I purchased it used form the dealer 9 months before the first episode. Seems the critters think Honda means Hotel!

CR-V EX-L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 16,000 miles

A foul odor was evident when the A/C fan was turned on. Removed cabin filter to find rodent nest of clean white fibers, rodent droppings, trash and acorns. New filter installed. Now I am afraid to turn on the fan because I do not want to breathe the air that might still be contaminated with disease causing dust particles carried by rodents. The foul odor is still in the car.

I sold a Camry that had this same problem. The air intake was completely open, so after cleaning out the mess, we put metal hardware cloth over the air intake holes that were located just under the windshield, easily accessible. Before I bought this Honda CR-V, I asked the dealer if there was any way rodents could get to the cabin filter, and was assured that they could not get in. This was not true. I need to screen the air intake on this CR-V, but I don't know where it is. This is a problem with several vehicles, and it is inexcusable that there is no barrier to keep animals out. If a rat can get in, so can a snake. I need to know how to fix this, and cannot find any information on the internet as to where I need to put the screen. I don't want to get wires chewed up, or rats killed and rotting in my car. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Update from Apr 7, 2016: The odor has finally improved. My concern is that critters can still get into this area and chew up the wires and could cause expensive damage. I am also afraid that a snake or other critter can get into the car by way of the cabin filter. I should not have to pay for rodent repellent tape to be wrapped around the wiring. I should not have to pay for screen to be installed to prevent rodents or other animals from access to this area in my car. I think Honda should recall these vehicles to inspect the wiring in these cars and replace any damaged wiring and install screen to prevent access to this area. If not a recall, Honda could provide a retrofit screen kit with instructions for the owner to install it. This is not a new problem, it has been reported from several late model car owners, several makes and models. Com on, just a little thought and prevention goes a long way. All this complicated technology in these high tech vehicles and you don't do anything to protect the wiring or the cabin from invaders?
