CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2019 Cherokee is racking up engine complaints for suddenly shutting down while driving. But the problem could possibly be related to the increasingly defective 9-speed transmission which suffers from hard shifts, lurching problems, and a wiring harness defect that can cause sudden shutdowns or an unexpected shift into neutral.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Slowing to a stop light and vehicle stalled out losing all power. The vehicle has already had the recalls associated completed and had a recent oils change. The day after the recalls, the car stalled again before coming to a full stop. Twice it was on a highway, once in a driveway, once in an intersection coming off a bridge. Twice in motion others were at a stop. I lost count and the issue is inconsistent. Most recent 1/24/21
While driving, my rear hatch warning came on, I pulled over to realize that the latch would not lock, causing my lights to stay on, causing a cold environment for my 9 months old baby, with the door not being able to seal. With this broken, also disables my remote start, voiding any anti theft abilities.

While driving, my car will randomly shut off completely. There is a dinging noise and a quick flash of the battery light and then it says the press brake and push start. I can not accelerate but can brake. As soon as I'm completely stopped, the steering locks and it struggles to start again. It is random and has happened more than once in a row. It happened 4 months ago and the service department said the battery failed and replaced the battery, but it happened again a week again while I was turning. After I restarted it, it did it like 15 seconds later. Then two days after that it shut off randomly while I was driving 35-40 mph down a straight road. I've taken it in again and this time they can't find anything wrong with it. Battery was fine, no codes. Even the software that got updated because of the recall (stalling while driving) was fine. I've seen people say that the oil level can cause it to stall, but my oil was at 60% at the time it started happening. It's not safe that the car randomly shuts off without notice, while driving on a road or highway. That can cause a serious accident if it happens at the wrong time.
6 times in the last week, my car has shut off mid drive. As I am driving, my car will ding, my battery light will flash on and then my car will completely shut down within 3-5 seconds. I will have to turn my key to off, wait a minute and restart. I will have to pump the gas pedal and my car will sputter before it turns over and starts back up. Under normal circumstances, I do not have any engine lights displayed on my screen for attention and everything runs smoothly. I have also checked my battery on the screen display as I drive and it is always between 14.2-14.4V. During these shuts, my car is going under 30 miles per hour, but has happened as I am turning and going straight. Most recently (this morning), I was driving straight (had just pulled out of my parking spot at my apartment) and my battery light turned on and my car locked. The steering wheel and pedals were unusable, but my engine remained on. I checked my battery during this and it says it was at 12.2V. I had to shut my car off, pump the gas to turn the engine over and my battery displayed as back at 14.4V. This happened 3 more times before I was out of my apartment complex (every 50 feet or so) and I turned around and parked again. I had my car hooked up to diagnostics machine after it began the first shut downs, but it returned with no error codes and my battery tested fine and all the wires were secure. I called my Jeep dealership and they stated I am outside my warranty (by 800 miles), so I would have to pay for the fix. This is clearly a defect with my car. I can see through online research that many other Jeep Cherokee owners are having these exact issues and Jeep is giving them the runaround. I also see there are some recalls for Jeep pertinent to this concern, however my particular car is not included. This is very dangerous as my son was in my car for all occurrences + I have a 30 min commute.
While driving East on interstate 70, I had a blowout. After looking at the remaining tires, it seemed that they were all pretty worn - if they have the minimum 2/32 tread remaining, they barely do. I feel that a proper safety inspection was completed before enterprise car rental on 37th street North in wichita, Kansas sent me away in the vehicle.
Bought car in 1/20 with 2.4L tigershark engine. Using excessive amount of oil; garage did not diagnose and car is now at Jeep dealer. We had oil changes completed as required and still had to add oil between changes. At the last garage visit they had to add 2.5 quarts of oil. No oil light came on at any time. When car started running rough and wanted to stall we took immediately to garage. They say we need a rebuilt or new engine because of the oil consumption. We are working seniors with only one vehicle! a $3,000 bill is ridiculous especially since we found that this engine has had the same problem since 2012!
While taking a right hand turn through a traffic light into the flow of traffic the vehicle shut off and I had to come to a complete stop and put it in park to restart.
Less than a year into the purchase of a brand new 2019 Jeep Cherokee, the auto start-stop failed completely during daily rides (before then, it used to work perfectly -- at the red light for example). Took it to the dealership service center where I had bought my car from, they told me the feature functions on a separate battery and that they could do nothing crazy but manually (temporarily) recharge whatever battery they were referring to. The service manager also cluelessly told me to give it a few hours after each ride until the battery responsible for the auto start-stop functionality recharges itself. Although I followed their instruction, I got zero result. Today at the time of writing this complaint, it is getting close to two years after my purchase and there occurs another annoying bug: The main battery keeps dying on me every time I want to start the car. Also, the front display shows an "engine temperature hot" message as the battery fails to start the car, although I do not believe the message is relevant since my car had been sitting in a fairly cool spot for at least 10 hours - no reason for any parts of it to get hot while the engine is shut down.
The Cherokee suddenly and unexpectedly turns off. Luckily while standing at a red light. Was at the dealership - drove several miles without finding an issue. Today (8-5-2020) it happened again for the third time.
The uconnect system is malfunctioning when in motion. It is randomcly calling people, nav is a mess and not working, radio will switch from fm/am/sattelite stations, every thing is haphazardly messed up. I feel it very dangerous as it is so distracting. I traded the car yesterday so I would not get in an accident.
My car has stalled on me a total of 8 times. Today while at the gas station I turned my car off and had to wait in the heat for my car to reboot and come back on. I spoke with some one in the service department who told me that the recall had been taken care of and that we should not have any other problems just 1 wk and a half ago when my car was serviced. We are currently having the same problem. I'm furious! I call and call and get the run around and now am told since I have 65000 miles I may now have to cover the expenses of a new starter because of their mess up.
I have reported problems with the transmission and revving up while driving today. But I got in my Jeep went down there road to a stop sign. Then preceded to drive and the Jeep just roared and did not accelerate, I'm in the middle of the road then here comes traffic closer. The transmission is a problem. There is no fixing, every Jeep ship I go to, they don't fine nothing.
The radio cuts in and out only on fm station not on am or if your playing through bluetooth or ax cord. I seen tons of complaints all over the internet and nothing is being done about it. We are ready to take the car back. Please do recall and replace radio. When it does this you can turn volume all the way up and its not very loud. Love the car please fix thanks
