CarComplaints.com Notes: Whenever a new product is introduced, there's bound to be some problems. And man oh man, does the 2006 Commander have some problems.

It's the plight of the 1st-generation adopter: you get the newest and shiniest in exchange for a handful of issues that get ironed out in future versions. But what happens when that handful of issues becomes a bucketload? The 2006 Commander has quality control issues like the door handles breaking off and the sunroof leaking. But what's truly worrisome is the electrical problems like the vehicle shutting down unexpectedly, gauges going crazy or the cruise control having a mind of its own.

Bottom line: if you want a Jeep Commander, you're better off looking at a later model year.

The 2nd row seat belts are unable to latch properly. Now 4 seat belts in Jeep do not latch properly. This is a major safety hazard and should have a recall. All auto companies should back their product and repair seat belts. Not to mention several of the interior door handles have busted out.

The driver side seat belt buckle stopped functioning properly over a couple of weeks. It was hard to engage the belt then it stopped recognizing the belt was buckled and the warning continually came on. Passenger side is now doing same. I had driver's buckle replaced at a whopping cost of approx. $400.

My Jeep Commander driver and passenger seat belts do not lock into place correctly. To get them to lock you have to press and hold in the red release button, then to unlock the seat belt you have to press the red release button. Now as of November 22, 2012 the passenger seat belt is hard to lock into place even when pushing the button.the alarm goes off as if it is not engaged and the light on the dash lights up and chimes continuously. I called Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 on November 26, 2012 and was told that there are no recalls. I was told I would have to take it in and pay for a diagnostic and then call back and maybe something can be done. She gave me a reference number, but said that she is still closing the case. When this happened I looked online and found many complaints for the exact same issue. This is a serious safety hazard and should be handled properly by Chrysler since it is a defect. I hardly even drive this car and have had older cars which I drove more often that never had any issues. With this same vehicle I had to deal with the stall issues for several months before it was fixed. Every time I took it to the dealership I was told that they would have to have it happen while they have it to diagnose it. I have had a Wrangler in the past too that had problems.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving in inclement weather at approximately 35-45 mph, an elk crashed into the front end of the vehicle. The driver and passenger side air bags both failed to deploy. The passenger seated in the front seat sustained injuries to the back and head. The contact sustained injuries to the neck and back. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the elk did not impact the vehicle in the area of the air bag sensors therefore, the air bags did not deploy. The contact stated that the air bag was defective and that the air bag warning light was illuminated prior to the crashed. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was filed of the incident.. the vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileage was 114,000. Updated 12/12/12 updated 12/21/2012

Jeep Commander driver and passenger seat belts do not lock into place correctly. To get them to lock you have to press and hold in the red button, then to unlock the seat belt you also have to press the red button. Now in addition, the passenger seat belt when locked into place - the alarm goes off as if the seat belt is not engaged and the dash light also is lit up. Sometimes with multiple lock/unlock attempts the alarm may go off. Often it chimes relentlessly even when seat belt is engaged. Chrysler customer care will not fully replace the defective seat belts even though it is a safety hazard.

I had a warranty on my Jeep and called in about my seats belt in 2008, told the company my rear seatbelts were falling apart and not able to click into place, as well as my 2nd row seat belts the plastic around them are falling off and the belts are not locking. The daimler Chrysler warranty company told me it was not covered under any recall, but this would be a defect in the seat belts not locking into belts clasps and not plastic is coming off, and my kids are coming out of the seatbelts, almost ending up in a wreck back in 2007, rep from warranty said there was nothing that could be done I would have to pay for seatbelts to be looked at. I am unable to securely put my kids in the back seats now. I am researching recalls now and seen I can make a formal complaint.

I am 5 months pregnant and my driver's side seat belt will not click into the latch easily. I have to literally bang it to get the latch to catch. I am concerned about the safety and intergity of belt especially if in a crash-will it come unlatch? plus, being midway through my pregnancy I am concerned about the other seat belts in the car, especially the one I will be using to carry my child in. I was concerned about a safe car seat now I must be concerned about the seat belt as well!!! my vehicles seat belt warning system will not alert to unclicked belt. It assumes that the belt is latched in place.

Recall notice from Chrysler. Took Commander into shop for repair. After 4 hours, technician stated that unable to download program from corporate computer to fix. Need to bring car back later. This is the second time for a recall, and our car has been in there a total of 4 times for safety issues such as broken seat belts. It has been there a number of other visits, starting at 2555 miles, for defective windshield mount, defective gas fill line mount, and defective windshield wiper fluid pump. Previous hazards were handled, but resulted in a good number of days of at least 6 hour services. Now, after 4 hours, this service is not completed and I have to bring the car back again.

I have a car that I owe 18K on that I cannot trade in because of this history it is only worth 8K. Throughout ownership I have had intermittent stalling, constant hesitation in acceleration. Additionally, the rear seat belt has let go and caused my son to hit his face on the back seat. Problems with seat belt latch sliding so that belt will not hook. Cannot see when backing up when my 5 kids are in the car. Tire pressure light comes on often, as does the air bag light. Exterior headlights are tilted so that they look like highbeams. This car is a danger.

My 2006 Jeep Commander (4.7 liter) constantly stalls and hesitates and the dealer keeps telling me they can't find anything wrong but there are hundreds of complaints online about the same thing and I want to know why this has not been recalled. Also the third row seat belts seem to have a problem.

2006 4.7 V8 Jeep Commander has had multiple problems, the most severe being 3 (out of 7) inoperable seatbelts and sporadic stalling of the vehicle. The first 8 - 10 times the vehicle stalled (went dead), I was at a stopped position attempting to accelerate. The most recent incident happened as I was driving in traffic. I lost all power steering and brakes when the vehicle died. I was going up a slight incline which assisted me in stopping and I put the vehicle in neutral and restarted. I have refused to drive the vehicle since that time out of safety concerns for my children and for others on the road. The dealership has attempted to correct the problem on 4 occasions - nothing has worked. The Chrysler corporation refuses to buy-back the vehicle because the dealership has not duplicated the problem in the shop. I have witnesses to the occurrences and have documented each time it has happened.
