CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

While driving at a constant speed on the highway, the engine stalled causing the brakes and power steering to be disabled. The first time it happened, 11/12/16, I was taking an exit off of the freeway. When I pressed the brake to slow down for the approaching red light, the pedal was stiff and would bot slow the vehicle. Thankfully, the light turned green so I let the vehicle coast. As I went to turn right, I realized there was no power steering either. After crossing over 2 lanes I was able to bring the car to a stop on the side of the road. That's when I realized the engine had stalled. Brought it to the dealership, paid $700 for something, then drove it back since they said it was fixed. Five months later, 4/20/17, same exact thing happened. It was 8:30am and I was bringing my 18mo old to daycare when I pressed the brake pedal to stop at a red light ahead and realize it was stiff and not working again. Fortunately, again, the light turned green and the car in front of me accelerated. I fought with the steering wheel to turn into a nearby gas station after the letting vehicle coast to a slower speed. After both incidences, I turned the vehicle off, waited a few minutes, then turned it back on. It hesitated a few times then cranked and functioned properly afterwards. Furthermore, during both incidences I was very slightly turning to the right; the first time to exit the hwy and the second time I was veering into the right lane. During the first incident, I was travelling on the freeway around 65mph. During the second, I was traveling at about 50mph.

When driving the engine will turn off with no warning. Since December until now, it has done this a total of 6 times. 3 of the times either merging onto the freeway or getting off of the freeway. Scares me so much. I have been lucky enough to not have anyone crash from the behind. My steering wheel locks, and the brakes become very hard to push down on. Its hard to move out of the way of traffic.

Vehicle lost power while driving at speeds of 55mph. Check engine light and multiple system warnings were shown by evic, including ABS, traction control, ignition system, 4WD system, and air suspension system. Braking power was severely diminished. Maximum speed was reduced to 5mph, before stalling out after 10 feet. The cause of the issue was a short in the crankshaft position sensor that disabled all powertrain and braking systems. All systems share the same 5 volt circuit into PCM.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will experience engine stall while the vehicle is in motion, at times in excess of 30 mph. This causes a loss of power steering and power brake functions. It has likewise stalled at stop lights/signals which is equally dangerous when vehicles are approaching from behind at high speeds expecting the vehicle in front to move with the green light. Chrysler issued a recall (P54) related to these issues, however the cheap external fuel pump relay wiring harness fix they employed to remedy the problems can be characterized as insufficient at best. In fact, the issues with our family vehicle have actually worsened since the P54 recall was performed in may of 2015. The vehicle's problems have now progressed to the point where the vehicle will not start: A typical symptom of these dangerous Jeep/Chrysler products. There are literally hundreds of consumer complaints outlining similar issues I.e., the vehicles being difficult to start or not starting at all, vehicles' power windows not operating properly, door locks opening and locking on their own, horn blaring, the vehicle not recognizing the fob, electronic fuel pumps remaining on after the vehicle is shut off and stalling while the vehicle is in motion. A common theme related to all of these issues seems to be the power distribution center for the vehicles or the tipm (total integrated power module). It seems Fiat - Chrysler has been aware of the problems with their oem manufactured tipm parts for some time, since 2007, but took the woefully inadequate route of correcting only a small and less dangerous issue of the manufacturers defect. Hence their court ordered P54 external fuel pump wiring harness, which on a good day will correct the fuel pump run-on. What needs to be addressed is the stalling while in motion issues associated with these vehicles. Please mandate a safety recall.

Vehicle shuts off randomly while driving. Both times it has happened during deceleration. Power steering and brakes are lost. No indicator lights visible and no diagnostic codes set. Chrysler customer service disavows any knowledge of a problem although there are several accounts of similar issues on the Jeep forums and other websites. Dealer can find nothing wrong. My wife is now afraid to drive the vehicle because she cannot control it without power assist.

Grand Cherokee

  • 44,680 miles
This Jeep engine failed / stalled while driving. This caused the vehicle to veer off the road twice on a turn, and almost cause two rear ends by failing in mid traffic, in four different occasions, since 2014. The vehicle engine cuts out, which causes the power steering and brakes to not function properly. The vehicle was in motion on various main streets, when this occurred. Naperville Jeep dealership (where this vehicle was purchased) has also maintained this vehicle per the maintenance schedule, has worked on this problem since it began. They have not been able to resolve the issue and returned the vehicle to us confident the problem was 'resolved' or non-existent. Attached is the vehicle recall and replacement record. From online research it seems this has occurred to other Jeep Grand Cherokee before and the typical solution is replacing the totally integrated power module (tipm). This vehicle's tipm was 'repaired' Sept 3, 2014. Below are the maintenance records related to this problem. 03/26/2014 mileage: 44,680 wro# 599705 11/25/2014 mileage: 51,329 cro# 615926 01/07/2016 mileage: 65,485 cro# 646292 06/10/2016 mileage: 69,938 cro# 658369 this vehicle is not safe and we have lost all trust and confidence in this vehicle.

The cruise control failed to engage and disengage, which caused the contact to have to turn off and restart the vehicle. The service engine light illuminated when the cruise control failure occurred several times. The vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. Driving w on 60 in AZ, 30 mins after having oil changed at local auto care shop, where I was told everything looked fine but my radiator hoses looking soft. Consider getting G new ones in this 112 degree heat (like the day I'm submitting this). On freeway, engine overheats, stalls, steering locks, brakes harden and I come to a complete stop in an inconvenient 2 inches off the curb, still in everyone's way as they attempt to exit mill ave. Brakes hard and doesnt allow for push-to-start button to turn over. Nor to place in neutral. Standing by for a tow as we speak. Never had this happen before. Coolant just topped off three days ago and given an okay after oil change half hour prior to this happening. Perhaps coincidence. Perhaps just life. Reporting either way.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 25 mph exiting a highway, the vehicle stalled and the fcw warning indicator illuminated. The contact shifted into park and the vehicle restarted normally. The failure recurred approximately fifteen times when driving and attempting to slow down. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they were not able to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was at the dealer for two weeks. The manufacturer headquarters telephoned the contact to pick up the vehicle, mentioned that a recording device was installed, and advised the contact to continue driving so the error could be recorded. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
