CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

My car engine stalls when I make turns specially early in the morning for no reason it just stalls without warning but sometimes when I came to a stop light as well, very very unsafe & scary!!! I've been lucky usually in the lane close to the sidewalk so I can maneuver to the side but eventually my luck will run out, I'm very unease when I drive this vehicle as I don't when I'll happen. The tipm was already taken care of but I still have the problem is not all the time but it happens, I've taken it to the dealer right after it happens but they can not reproduce the problem or find any error codes

I was driving on the highway to work in the passing lane, when the RPM's went way up and then way down. I heard a loud noise coming from under the hood and loss of power from engine. No engine light indicator was on before this happened or any sort of indication this was about to occur. I pulled over and had it towed to the dealership. The dealership indicated that the crankshaft was broken internally and that this is a defect of workmanship as I can show records of every oil change on this vehicle. The dealership is offering no good will and Chrysler refuses to help as the mileage is 114,000. I still owe close to $13,000 on this vehicle and to replace the engine it is going to cost $7,800.

My car will stall and then accelerate very quickly. If I am driving and trying to accelerate my car will stall almost cutting off. This usually happens around a speed of 25/30 mile per hour. I also experienced deceleration while driving on the highway at 60/65 mph. This is very scary. Also when I am in reverse my transmission makes a knocking sound. My engine light constantly comes on. Heat vapors comes from the hood of the car.

My car would not start on a number of occasions--the starter would make noise but the engine would not start. It usually started on the second or third try. I received a recall notice for defective tipm unit but was told that the part was not in stock. Well over a year later, the company still does not have any in stock. In addition, I have experienced my horn randomly doing off (sounds like the panic alarm) even though the car was running and in motion. Jeep should be much more proactive about this as an stalls during driving as a result of a tipm defect could case bodily harm to the driver, passengers, and others on the road.

Vehicle has completely shut down while driving 5 times in the recent past. 1X19 Oct; 2X31 Oct; 2X7nov. The vehicle completely shuts off while driving. This is very dangerous as all power is lost for breaks, steering, and obviously no acceleration. Chrysler safety recall P54 has been applied prior to these issues. Dealer and Chrysler are charging me customer (at my expense) to flash new software files on the vehicle computers. I sense this is very likely a much broader safety issue and am hoping our government (NHTSA) officials will investigate before someone is injured as a result of this.

Since safety recall P54 was applied, my vehicle has completely died while driving on 5 separate occasions 1 on 19oct, 2on31oct, and 2on7nov. The vehicle is currently at sam lehman Chrysler Jeep dealership in peoria, il. They claim that I need new software at my expense to address the vehicle shut downs. Attached transcript is with Chrysler. They do not appear to take this safety issue very seriously.

Grand Cherokee

  • 59,000 miles
1. the vehicles head has to be replaced due to bad valves at only 59,000 miles. 2. the front right turn signal stopped working, and is burning the bulb socket and headlight housing. It was determined by an independent mechanic that the tipm module is going bad causing shorts, and other electrical issues. (the dealer claims it is a burned bulb socket, but we tested the socket, and entire system and found the true problem) 3. the horn stops working randomly, and sometimes when it does work its only the high tone. This problem is also traced back to a faulty tipm module.

Prior to receiving the current recall on my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I was merging onto the freeway and my Jeep lost complete power. I started to panic because there was nothing I could do to control my Jeep. Luckily, I was on the outside lane and just coasted to a stop. Then, I sat there for about 10 minutes while I called my wife to let her know she would need to come get me. Then, I went to see if my Jeep would drive one more time and it drove off just fine. Then, when I received this notice I called the Jeep dealership to ask them to fix my Jeep due tot he recall and they told me that they were waiting on parts and would let me know when they come in. However, now my air bag lights are on as well as my traction control light is on. I also intermittently when I push on my brakes it will feel as if I have been rear-ended. When I look behind me there is nothing there that would indicate I have been rear-ended.

I was out driving from the grocery store and I was pressing on the breaks to turn a curve the vehicle speeded up. I was originally going 25 mph and started to slow up because I was approaching a curve but instead of it slowing down it sped up to 35mph while going around a curve. Thank god no one else was on the road at that time. Two weeks later my husband stated that when he was driving the vehicle the same exact then happened to him. At that time we took the vehicle back to gilman Chrysler and Jeep in houston tx where we purchased the vehicle from (8/10/14). They claim they tested the vehicle and found nothing wrong with it. My husband and I kept explaining to the service guy that something is wrong with the vehicle and we don't want to get into an accident for an issue that can be resolved. The service guy stated that they did all they could but they will keep our information on file. I am very upset with this situation. My husband and I have three children in which are in this vehicle all the time. There have been several recalls on this vehicle and none of which have been repaired because gilman Chrysler would state they don't have the part or they don't see a recall at this time. I want something to be done about this now before something terrible happens. I will not let this situation go. I will continue to fight for a resolution until someone resolves it. Please contact me immediately about this situation as this is the only vehicle that we have.
