CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012-2017 Nissan Versa has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data from the earlier model years in this 2nd generation Nissan Versa.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Versa owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Versa S Plus 1.6L

  • CVT transmission
  • 5 miles

I've owned Nissan vehicles back in the 80's without any problems especially the transmission. I purchased a brand new 2017 Nissan Versa S Plus on 10/31/2017 with only 5 miles. After I took delivery It was time to make the 42 mile trip home, I noticed something strange after only about 4 miles into my trip. After slowing down to make a right turn, I felt a light slipping in the transmission but didn't think much of it since this is a brand new car. I drove the car occasionally on short hops to the store or doctor's office as I don't drive much anyway.

January 2018 I started noticing this issue happening more often. Now that the car has only 60 miles on it. so I contacted Premier Nissan LLC were I purchased the car. They told me not to worry about it as the car is new and the transmission needed to break in. February 1, 2018 with 90 miles on the odometer the light slipping still continues off and on at slow speeds. So I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs Dept. to file a complaint on the issue here and they advised me to take it to a Nissan dealer close to home.

After extensive research I was shocked to learn that this has been an ongoing problem with cars having a CTV transmission especially Nissan vehicles in particular. This is very sad for hard working American's like myself who spend $15,000 or more for a vehicle and in return all you get these days is garbage, what happened to quality?

The government needs to step in and go after these car company's especially when they now what's going on and the dealer ships who try to tell the car owner some lie hoping the warranty runs out so that these dealer ships try to charge you more than what the car is worth. The really sad part is that most car company's are starting to switch to this CVT transmission.

One thing I can say is I will never buy a Nissan vehicle ever again or any vehicle with this type of transmission.
