CarComplaints.com Notes: Beware of the NHTSA complaint data for the 2004 Camry. It is almost certainly misleading.

The problem with NHTSA data for the 2004 Camry is that for months on end, the news media repeatedly told the public that several Toyota models had an unintended acceleration defect, & to go to safercar.gov (the NHTSA's website) to file a complaint.

So, the NHTSA received a disproportionate number of complaints about unintended acceleration issues because of the national news media attention, to the point where their data is unreliable taken in context with any other vehicle that did not receive national news attention.

CarComplaints.com typically receives more complaints per day about vehicles than the NHTSA does, but the news media did not repeatedly say "go to CarComplaints.com to report your Camry acceleration problems" like they did about the NHTSA -- so although we have less complaint data than the NHTSA for the 2004 Camry, our data for the Camry is a far more statistically accurate representation of the Camry's reliability than what the NHTSA data shows.

With my foot on the brake, when I put the car in drive, it suddenly accelerated jumping ahead hitting a tree in parking lot. Even with braking, it did not stop. I had to reverse and it still speed up without pressing the accelerator. I had to put it in park. Then only it stopped. The airbags did not work. Only my shoulder & lap belts saved me. Such an episode happened several times while I was trying to back up in my drive way, it accelerated while I was pressing the brake. I reported this problem to Toyota company, torrance, ca as well as its dealer in westbury, NY. Notihing was done to date. It started in 2005 and continued even in 2020. The mileage varied from 1500 to 134000. Dates also varied.

I received letters where I was informed that my vehicle had the Toyota defective airbag. I would not have noticed because it is an internal defect of the car, but the consistency and urgency of the danger I decided to take it to repair I made the appointment for November -15-2018 @ 7:00 am to 1-888-663-8613. From that day November 15, 2016, I left my vehicle at the camelback dealership at 1550 E. camelback rd. In phoenix, AZ, Toyota, and to date they have not repaired or returned me. I have made many calls but they do not give specific answers.today is 12-05-2018

Noticed slight swelling of the passenger side airbag over a period of a few months. Appeared that the upper seam of the cover was widening. Yesterday when driving home noticed it appeared larger than usual. Upon getting home too a picture, as the airbag seam had begun to split and can see a red foam like substance through the split. Called local Toyota dealership and individual I spoke with was vague, had never heard of anything similar or any airbag recalls with Toyota. Seemed distracted and rushed, although it was about an hour til their official closing time. Proceeded to call Toyota customer service. Spoke with a very nice agent who searched for recalls based on my VIN number. She came up with no recalls but expressed similar concerns as myself of the airbag deploying and causing injury or accident. She assigned me a case number but advised me to have it looked at at a Toyota dealership. After researching online, it seems like a problem that many have noted...same description and very similar pictures.
