CarComplaints.com Notes: Beware of the NHTSA complaint data for the 2005 Camry. It is almost certainly misleading.

The problem with NHTSA data for the 2005 Camry is that for months on end, the news media repeatedly told the public that several Toyota models had an unintended acceleration defect, & to go to safercar.gov (the NHTSA's website) to file a complaint.

So, the NHTSA received a disproportionate number of complaints about Toyota unintended acceleration issues because of the national news media attention, to the point where their data is unreliable taken in context with any other vehicle that did not receive national news attention.

CarComplaints.com typically receives more complaints per day about vehicles than the NHTSA does, but the news media did not repeatedly say "go to CarComplaints.com to report your Camry acceleration problems" like they did about the NHTSA -- so although we have less complaint data than the NHTSA for the 2005 Camry, our data for the Camry is a far more statistically accurate representation of the Camry's reliability than what the NHTSA data shows.

Brake pedal is "stuttering" at quick stops. When traffic light turns yellow and I press down brake firmly, the brake works, then releases by itself. I have to quickly press it again to actually stop vehicle. This "stutter" causes the car to lurch forward a few feet. It's a bit scary to not have control over braking appropriately. Should be a recall on brakes!!!! dangerous!!! happening consistently for last 3 months!!!

I, robert, was sitting in the car when my wife came out of the store and got into it. I put my foot on the brake and started the car. It took off at a very high rate of speed. The car lunged ahead and steadily picked up speed. The car hit a lady walking with her groceries, then hit a parked vehicle and pushed it into another vehicle. The air bag never deployed. The brakes would not work. The only thing that made it stop was that it hit a large SUV. My wife did not have time to fasten her seat belt, thus sustaining injuries. It all happened in a matter of seconds. There was a police report filed. I was not charged with the accident. I purchased the vehicle on May 24, 2017 at a public auction in Washington, DC. That means that these vehicles are still being sold as if there is not a problem with them. The vehicle had about 240,000 miles when I purchased it. When we checked the internet, we found that there were hundreds of complaints. Beware!!!

On March 19, 2016, I was driving my Toyota 2005 Camry at approximately 35 mph, when the car suddenly accelerated. I applied the brakes, emergency brake and put the car in park. The car continued to accelerate and I attempted to approach the freeway on ramp. I was unable to turn the steering wheel. I crossed a raised island and into the freeway lane and hit a car that was driving onto the freeway ramp. Both cars were damaged. My car was totaled. I was transported to hospital and was discharged from emergency room.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Camry. While reversing into a parking space, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. As a result, the vehicle crashed into two different vehicles and the curb. The contact mentioned that the transmission became stuck into second gear and the brakes failed. A police report was filed and no injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 118,000.

The brakes turn off when riding over a rough surface. I know how ABS works. There is nothing that should trigger the ABS. I know how it works over snow. The brakes work fine over smooth surface. But if braking over a pothole the ABS unnecessarily turns on causing the vehicle to skid and slide much further than normal stopping distance. No other car I have driven in my life has done this. This seriously needs to be investigated. It has been happening on my car since 2005. Toyota dealer has refused to address issue. And I see many others have posted the same complaints to nhtsb, but no recall campaign has been addressed by Toyota.

Ever since this car was purchased it has been affected by a super sensitive anti-lock braking system. When routinely braking over a pothole or small road disturbance, the anti-lock braking system is triggered. This in turn causes car to roll much further than it is suppose to. I have repeatedly taken to dealer through the years and they could not locate what is causing the problem. The brake pads and discs are all fine, the car is already around 9 years old and only has 37K miles on it because we have always been afraid to drive the car extensively because of this issue.

Car feels like its going to flip over when driving past 60. Had to have brakes changed twice. Car has accelerated while driving at least twice in a two year span when driving over 60 miles per hour. Biggest problems are the wheels which make the car ride seem unstable but only got tires rotated once; however, vehicle seems to run lop-sided?

Car stopped to allow garage gate to raise/open at which time the car, which was initially in park, was put in drive with foot on brake - car then went completely out of control at a significant speed crashing into a cement pillar which is what stopped the car - the pillar. The airbags were deployed, the car was totaled as designated by the insurance company.an attempt was made to stop the car with the emergency brake to no avail. Injuries of 3 passengers are very significant - 8 broken ribs of one passenger, 2 broken legs and removal of spleen to another passenger and the driver suffered a compound fracture of ankle. Recovery and rehabilitation are still pending and one passenger may not recover.
