CarComplaints.com Notes: How can we give the 2006 Camry our "Seal of Awesome" when the NHTSA data shows engine problems in the triple digits & multiple deaths/injuries/crashes etc?

The problem with NHTSA data for the 2006 Camry is that for months on end, the news media repeatedly told the public that several Toyota models had an unintended acceleration defect, & to go to safercar.gov (the NHTSA's website) to file a complaint.

So, the NHTSA received a disproportionate number of complaints about Toyota unintended acceleration issues because of the national news media attention, to the point where their data is unreliable taken in context with any other vehicle that did not receive national news attention.

In other words, it's our opinion that the 2 deaths & other injuries/fires/crashes reported to the NHTSA are significant, but (unfortunately) not out of the ordinary for any vehicle, once you factor in the effects of the extended national media coverage of Camry unintended acceleration issues.

CarComplaints.com typically receives more complaints per day about vehicles than the NHTSA does, but the news media did not repeatedly say "go to CarComplaints.com to report your Camry acceleration problems" like they did about the NHTSA -- so although we have less complaint data than the NHTSA for the 2006 Camry, our data for the Camry is a far more statistically accurate representation of the Camry's reliability than what the NHTSA data shows.

About These NHTSA Complaints:

This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.

I have a 2006 Toyota camery. I have had issues with the brakes every since I got the car. The anti-lock brakes don't work the way that they should. When you press on the brake hard like you would in an emergency the car will not stop at all its as if the brakes go completely out. But if you press them slowly they work fine. But if you give a quick press they don't work. This has resulted in me almost having several accidents. I did have an accident in November 2006. When I pressed the brakes they completely gave out and I hit someone from behind.

I have a problem on my 2006 Camry le. Almost had an accident. The brake pedal goes all the way almost to the floorboard before the car slows down or stops. I took my car to the dealer 3 times to have them check. Toyota motors & the dealer said normal, nothing wrong. They won't do anything more. I found all lot of Camry owners with the same problem. Please check this : www.autobytel.com/content/research/forums/index.cfm/action/posts/fid/3327 is there any solution for this. Please help.

I am writing to inform you of a dissatisfactory experience I had with Toyota. Recently, my wife and I were driving and had a very unfortunate experience. While driving at full speed, we were hit from the back. At that point, the car immediately lost control. Imagine our surprise by being stuck in a car over which we had absolutely no power. We tried to stop in just about every way possible. My first instinct was to step on the brakes. I did so, as hard as I could, but with no success. Apparently, the brakes failed. I still kept trying, but they would not work. Basically, my wife and I were trapped in a car going at a fast speed with absolutely no way to stop. It was a very scary situation, and we feared for our lives. We consider ourselves very lucky as the situation could have definitely been a lot worse. It was a good thing that there were no cars or pedestrians that got in our way. We had no idea what to do. We continued trying to get the car to stop by putting the car into park and pulling the emergency brake, but neither of these methods worked. With such a reputable company like Toyota, I would imagine that the cars were designed to handle situations of high stress like this one. My wife and I luckily managed to get out safely. Somehow we managed to maneuver the car to side, but unfortunately it landed in a ditch, and the car was totally wrecked. Just a few feet from where we landed was a tree and we were fortunate the car stopped when it did. It was a terrifying situation. It was shameful that a car from such a reputable company could put us through such a terrible ordeal. I never would have imagined anything like this would happen. I cannot even begin to describe how unhappy I am. I do not have the same faith in Toyota cars as I once did. I just wanted to make you aware of the situation. I appreciate your time.

I have noticed my 2006 Camry xle has not stopped as quickly as the 1995 V6 Camry I previously owned. The instance this has been most dangerous is when I had 3 grandchildren in the back of my car and a passenger in the front. I applied brakes while going about 45 mph behind a flatbed truck. The brakes did not stop the quickly enough, and we almost ran into the back of the vehicle. Also, if I try to stop quickly at a yellow light, the car cannot stop quickly enough. I end up either in the middle of the intersection or running a light to avoid being hit. The car only has 1250 miles.

: the contact stated at various speeds while depressing the brake pedal there was excessive braking distance resulting in two rear end collisions. The first occurrence caused injuries to the other driver and a police report was taken. The vehicle was towed to a body shop each time for repairs. The dealer was not able to duplicate the problem.

I have a 2006 Toyota Camry with 1700 miles on it. I had problems with the brakes 3 times and have had the car only 8 months. When I try to stop it seems the engine races and the brakes won't stop the car. The first time I went through a stop sign. The second time I was pulling out of a parking lot and the car kept going and was almost hit by a semi-truck. The third time I was stopping for a light and the car sped up. I had my foot on the brakes so I put it in park but it didn't stop and I rear ended a van. The police would not let me drive the car home. Oak lawn Toyota said I had to have the car towed to my house for them to come out and inspect it. They just wanted me to pay the $300 fee. Toyota came to the dealer to inspect it over 3 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything. I am afraid to drive the car. I only drive it when I have to take my 90 year old father to the grocery store.
